Just a thought: If you show such a very special place like this tree nursery, maybe add their website, name, adress somewhere? Maybe someone in your audience is in need of a tree (unfortunately not me) and they even ship to the rest of Europe. They seem like an awesome family owned business that knows their stuff. And were very kind to give you a tour. Thank you very much for taking us along and planting trees is always awesome.

I studied architecture and truly believe the architecture of the home has to represent the people who will live there. So in my mind a Newby home has to represent England, Africa, Finland, Portugal, Scotland, and all the adventures the Newby family has and will take around the world. With every project I am spotting a little more and more of all the countries and adventures. So to the Newby family you are doing an amazing job on your home!

Putting the largest tree you can afford in the center of the circle would be a great architectural feature. Add a ring bench seating around it, or a decorative tiled wall with wall cap to sit on, as well as up-lighting, and you've got a beautiful statement when first pulling into your property.
You can get smaller ones (not 500 year olds) for the farm production.

We are in southwest Turkey and bought and planted thirty young olive trees ten years ago. They have always produced fruit. Some trees have grown really well. A couple seem to have not grown at all, but we get between 20-30 liters of our own oil + olives to cure, every year and I absolutely love having our own olive grove! We also planted 15 pomegranate trees and juice most of the fruit, freezing it to have all through the year. Best pomegranates I have ever tasted!

Doing something different was great, and a trip to a garden centre is a real treat.
I know those 500 year old trees were magnificent, but here's a thought : They only got to be 500 years old because at one time someone valued a 5 year old tree.
Oh building styles. Every country has so many styles of building inspired by so many other countries, but isn't that how our own styles came into being? Where would our traditional oldest buildings be without roman arches?
You have your Moroccan tiles on everything too, so you already had a multicultural style.
It is after all your dream. We've seen the down side and hard challenges of sticking to it, enjoy the upside too.

Wow I’ve never seen a moving prickly jungle in my whole life! Seriously you guys are the best. The best each Sunday morning to watch, with much surprises, while I am having my coffee. In fact I’ve been watching your show since the beginning, however many years that was. I too would like to see your olive trees mature to a beautiful 500 yrs lady. But sadly I don’t know if I will last another 5 years. That 5 years that I look forward to each Sunday morning to see all the wonderful growths in your farm. It has also brought much inspiration to what I do in my little yard here in Alberta, Canada. My grandchildren live many thousands of miles away in another country and I don’t or hardly get to see them growing up. Instead seeing your two lovely child growing up each week is filling the void that I miss in seeing my own grandchildren grow up. You don’t know how special that is to me. The growth in your farm from all the projects you undertook, and now the trees, have brought so much joy in my life. So much to look forward to each week. Thank you so much for this and I am sure it has brought even greater joy to yourself in your adventures. Keep up the good work Newbys!

@@mika72.-Bois I do have video calls with my grandchildren sometimes but it's never the same thing as interacting with them live. Happy beautiful Sunday Newby family, love the idea of planting trees in the area you selected, that rainfall will nurture the trees and you will have less water overflowing. Sure Joao is right you can buy yourself good olive oil, but those trees are for your children and grandchildren. You are leaving them a legacy. Wish we could grow olive trees here across the pond in cold country, olive trees sign of Peace, Longevity and Friendship. About the extension for the Stone House and the cement ramp you built I would paint the same colour as your terracotta tiles, it would fit in the surroundings and definitely paint also the wood shed as well. All in all something Newby right???? Your friends Luca, Sara and Luce LeAw can give you pointers on how to care for olive trees. They are back in Sicily on their olive orchard. In a world of cookie cutter aesthetics your family has created one completely your own. Everything John said about the porch rang so true, and I love how the wall was inspired by your last vacation. You should definitely keep designing your home the way you have been. Your love for Portugal is obvious and will shine through, but you are travelers and you wanted your boys to have the world to explore. What better way than to have some of your travels be part of your home. Then you can embrace that Portuguese lifestyle while reminding yourself where you’ve been and make yourself excited about where your going next.

The olive trees are a great investment. Regarding your analogy, the new car would eventually become an old car, the 1st class ticket, while very nice, will become a fond memory but the trees will last forever. They will bring you great joy watching them mature and you will produce your own olive oil to use & share with friends. A real win win. Good on you!! Landscaping is always expensive. I've found doing a little at a time helps ease the wallet pain.

Googles AI says: Replanting a 500-year-old olive tree is a delicate task, but it can be done with care. Here are the steps you should follow: Assessment and Preparation: Inspect the Tree: Examine the tree carefully. Look for signs of disease, dead branches, or other issues. Trim away any unhealthy parts. It will need a good drain. Choose the Right Time: The best time to replant an olive tree is in late winter to early spring.

I love your porch! The climbing roses will look so beautiful! What kind of roses are they? Your house is your dream! It is fanciful and embodies who you are! It doesnt have to conform to "Portuguese" traditions! After all, Portugal, like many other countries had adopted many different styles through the ages, but had developed Manueline style that included Gothic and Moorish influences!
My sister and her husband put in about a dozen young olive trees just a few years ago. At 3 years old, the trees are producing fruit! They are now harvesting olives and taking them to press into oil! They are planning on selling their olive oil, but right now, they are getting more oil than they can use or give away! The oil is the best taste and smelling olive oil! They bring us a bottle of oil each Christmas! We save it for salads and dipping!

My two cents, a statement tree in the middle of that circle driveway would look spectacular!!! Our outlook is similar, hubby & I wanted trees for privacy, shade for pool & that one extra special tree. We're older than you 😂 so we went with between 8-15ft on all. Our yard was a complete blank slate bare of landscaping. So we added palm trees, 3 different types, 19 as a privacy hedge, 3 for shade on new pool & that 1 special one, a coconut palm. Bought most 8-15ft high so we're not staring at neighbors or swimming in a hot pool in Florida summer 😅 plus they take years to mature & we ain't got time for that!
Love the English porch btw, I'm an eclectic kinda girl too, totally love your style & seeing you build your dream property & home Newbys!!!

I hope you are able to eventually buy one of those gorgeous old trees! By the way, I noticed that some of the older trees on your property have ivy growing on them. You should remove those vines, they tap into the bark and stress out the trees and can even kill them. Just sever the vines at their base and pull off as much of vine as you can.

The olive trees looked amazing! Someone there knows the art of bonsai very well! In California we have an old olive tree that makes beautiful black olives. It definitely needs some serious pruning to be able to get into the center of the tree to be able to pick the fruit easier! That's a job that needs a professional. It's my son's land so it's his decision when this will happen. The tree looks like it could be anywhere from 50 to 100 or more years old. It looks like you could use a strong truck and tractor on your farm! It was funny watching you carry those trees in a small car! I'm sure you are well aware of this problem. Good luck! I was just gone for a week and sooo much happened! It is a joy to see, how much fun both of you are having in this "plant shop"!
I would have been carried away too, with those different aged trees! So beautifull! I probably would have left my wallet at home on purpose, took just an amount of money with me and no credit card!🤣🤣
It was very interesting to listen how all of this works with digging them out , again and again until they are at their forever home!
And Tara, my thoughts were the same! The pots first into the car! At best you can leave the trunk open and tow it ! But you are very diplomatic in letting the men have their way, thinking they know what they´re doing, hihi!
But the important thing is, the trees got home in one peace, and you, too! So what, if you got a few scratches? At least John got some, too!
The best was Joao´s comment! Buying the olive oil at the shop🙈🙈🙈. Well, for now not the badest idea! So, not buying in a shop, but supporting someone local with really good, selfmade olive oil until you can show Joao your own one! I´m sure this won´t be too long!😉
    Great episode, like always!
