Active Euro Nymphing: having fun swinging a nymph

  • Dead drifting nymphs isn't the only way.
When mayflies emerge, some of them exhibit a peculiar behaviour that makes them very vulnerable to trout. As anglers we experience this when we use a Leisenring Lift or have a fish hit our nymph when it begins to move. It's very common. We dead drift a nymph or wet fly and then when it starts to swing, the fish hits it. There's a reason why this happens. I have produced a series of videos that explains the phenomena and how to take advantage of it.

Got here after watching a 10 years old video about making spinners. Figured I'd have a peak at other videos on the channel.
If I may bring my 2 cents....
You've made a really good intro to "active" style of the Euro nymphing that not a lot of people are talking about.
Unless I am wrong the competitor shown in your video is Pablo Castro. Maybe I am wrong but I fished in his group during the world championship last year. For those who don't know he is the guy who came up with the idea and concept of the "perdigone"
Now I'll elaborate a bit on one important aspect which is WHAT and HOW the fish want to feed in a specific day, temperature, water condition, weather and all. While people think you're just presenting flies. There's a multitude of ways to present the nymphs to those fish.
In the competition footage the competitor may have gone through all of those presentations early in his session to validate what worked and then focused on a specific style and increasing the catch rate.
IF you have access to water with mountain white fish and trout I'd suggest you work on those white fish and go back at different time of the year or weather pattern. Some days they might want the nymph in the upstream section of your cast and pick the fly while it's descending in the water column) other times it might be a dead and slight animation that trigger the take and then you have the downstream takes which are the most challenging of all. There's even the complete static rod with the fly being stationed in one spot and the current will slightly move it around.
Bottom line is, the fish dictate how they feed and you adapt to it or you get skunked! I can also tell you from my own experience that the perfect dead drift are the least effective method on my book and I can count on one hand the day the fish only wanted dead drifted flies with no active movement to induce any takes. Yet it's what 95% of the guys "euro nymphing" on youtube have been praising!

That angler is one of our local competition guys. I'm totally with you on the dead drift aspect. It gets pounded into the heads of beginners to always dead drift, but I get most of my fish on a moving nymph. I only hooked one fish that day on a dead drift.
We don't have whitefish in these waters. Our most common game fish around here are rainbows (steelhead), browns, smallmouth bass, northern pike, and walleye, plus we'll also target carp, channel catfish, sheephead (freshwater drum), mooneye and a few other species that will take a fly

@@hooked4lifeca these are very different behaving fish and Euro would certainly not be my method of choice with all the fish you mentioned. The idea of variation on adaptability of techniques and presentation is definitely what will make an angler successful in catching fish. That's the message ! Great stuff, tight line!

I was just providing a list of our species. They require a variety of techniques to catch.

The amount if fish I've caught on the swing and rise... To take this one step further, try making a couple tiny strips before picking the line back up. Some days I only catch fish on the strip.
When wading across the river, always keep the nymph in the water. Even when it moves like a torpedo it still catches fish sometimes.

Ya, one fish that didn't make the editing cut was caught just off the dangle when I started to draw in line. Caught lots of fish on wet flies when stripping off of the dangle as well.

    Mr. Charles,
Have you ever measured the weight of that nymph? Some anglers loading the nymph with tons of metal that it reaches around 1 gram. I wonder whether you agree that with 1 gr nymph and a thin line you do not need any sighter, any dead drift etc. By just knowing the tip of the 2wt rod is bending one can easily bounce the fly an inch from the bottom. If one rigs the same rod with a spinning reel and a 6lb braided line one can even do a puppet show.

It's less that half a gram. None of my flies reach a gram in weight.
