    I just turned 48. I started riding last winter and got out three times in the worst conditions for a beginner (bullet proof ice). I just acquired a Burton Free Thinker and can't wait for the season to begin here on the east coast. This video? That's how I want to ride!! That is so smooth and graceful. If I could ride like this, I'd go into my old age a happy man. Thanks for posting!

    Ryan Knapton - could you tell us what kind of board do you use? Why did you choose this board?

    • @RyanKnapton
      @RyanKnapton  7 років тому +4

      For years I rode the Burton Custom, and Custom X. I liked the flex, and shape at that time. After I got into carving more, then I moved to the wide versions of each. After that I moved up in length to get wider yet, but that extra width is very marginal. Then I had a broken board that a shop was giving away that was really wide (compared to anything I had ridden at the time). Even though it was broke it became my favorite board cuz of how much deeper I could carve on it before hitting my toes and heels into the snow. Next I paid Unity Snowboards to make me a custom board (the owner is a friend and he gave me a deal on the 2 boards they made me). I went up wider and wider (27.5cm, then 29cm) with each of those, but kept the same sidecut radius of 8.7m. Most companies presses can't build wider yet, and thats eventually what I wanted. Luckily then Donek Snowboards asked if I'd be interested in trying out their boards... and after the last couple years we've made a handful of revisions and they've now given me my own model. I use mine in a super wide version, with a larger sidecut radius than most riders would want. So although my board is PERFECT for what I do and how I ride, I really don't suggest anyone just go get my specs cuz they most likely wouldn't like em. But the board can be customized and moving up in width first and then sidecut radius is my tips for if you're mostly focused on carving deep on a freestyle snowboard. Happy Shreddin!

    How long would you say it took you before you could do the nose rolls pretty comfortably? A few seasons? 1 season?

    • @RyanKnapton
      @RyanKnapton  7 років тому

      +AdamV For me I had a ton of nice buttering tricks before I was doing these like this.. but yup, if you can carve decently regular and switch, I think within a season you could have them really good. For a lot of people there stance may not be wide enough to really hold the press long, so keep that in mind if you find your struggling with em. Best luck and happy shreddin!

  • @benmarsh249
    @benmarsh249 7 років тому

    Hey ryan, i have a new Donek snowboard i'm gonna try out for the first time in a few weeks, what are you thoughts & recommendations on 'de-tuning' your edges ? I don't want to loose the ability to carve the s%"t out of the mountain !

    • @RyanKnapton
      @RyanKnapton  7 років тому

      I use to detune the tip and tail just a bit, but now I ride them exactly how they come. When I'm doing my buttering stuff often I'm riding the edge even just at the very end of the nose or tail, so I like that to be a bit sharp still to balance on... I've over-detuned one board and then it was noticeable when doing say fs and bs nose-rolls. So try it as is, and if you do feel it's too catchy or anything, then gently give it a bit of detuning until it feels right. Happy shreddin!

    • @WyattBrown377
      @WyattBrown377 7 років тому +1

      Definitely don't detune right away, give it a test ride stock and then if you find it a bit too catchy you can detune just a bit right at the contact points. Just be careful, remember you can't get back the material you shave off. Also many people will tell you to detune too far into the sidecut, doing so makes for a more forgiving ride and makes it easier to do presses, jibs, rails, etc. But if you want to carve the shit out of the mountain you want as much grip as possible!

      The gimbal helps a ton, but a great tip for if your not able to get one is using an extra long mono-pod... it helps get rid of a bunch of the small little vibrations that happen while riding... and just having the camera person put extra focus into holding the camera or stick as smooth or still as possible. Happy shreddin!

      I'm definitely going to upgrade! :D Basically it's double all the specs. I didn't upgrade to the 5, cuz they were the same that was on my Hero 4 black, but yup, do shoot 4k in 60fps and the other frame rates doubling has me stoked. Obviously I use a gopro extensively so its worth it for me, but for many whot don't record much or need much slow mo, then a previous version can be just fine of course.
