  • Filmed during Ivan Harbour’s last site visit to the Metro Tunnel Project in Melbourne, the video by @ Rail Projects Victoria explores the design behind Town Hall Station, one of the most complex builds currently under construction for the scheme.
In the video, Ivan discusses how the station's design aims to enhance the underground journey for the public while maintaining a strong connection to the local landmarks surrounding the site, such as St. Paul's Cathedral and Melbourne Town Hall.
A new 19-metre-wide station concourse will serve as an additional public square, located underneath the existing Melbourne City Square. For passengers it will be a majestic space, showcasing the station’s incredible engineering elements, such as the 8 concrete and steel columns that support the existing square, towering 14 metres above the concourse, drawing gazes upwards.
Down on the platform, the space feels like a cathedral, with a central aisle and side aisles; both platforms are separated from the central movement space, resembling the plan of a cathedral but much longer, spanning over 200 metres!
The design for the five stations is a world-class collaboration between leading international design practices Hassell, Weston Williamson + Partners, and RSHP, as part of the CYP joint venture.
