    Paul, you have a fantastic job of explaining everything about the connections with existing trackage and how people will actually use the new stations and cross connections in the future. You should be employed by future rail projects as a publicity promoter as you you see the construction as an end-user point of view. Well done and thank you!
    Between you and @Taitset we have “down under” equivalents of Geoff Marshall and RMTransit.

    Museum Station Melbourne was renamed because the Melbourne Museum physically moved to a different location. The Museum used to be housed in the State Library facility and was more know for the museum than the library outside of academic circles. So the name was changed to Melbourne Central still being reflective of its location. Sydney had nothing to do with it in what was a far less connected time than now.

    If that canopy is for South Kensington Station I'm glad there is some plans to upgrade it even if it's a minor one, as you yourself probably realised it's not great. Even if it's just a clean up and some more shelter that would be good. But the big thing is the platforms, they really are not wide enough. I have heard somewhere that they plan to remove the tracks alongside the Metro Tunnel portal once it opens (I do hope they provide another connection from the Werribee/Williamstown lines to the Sunbury line though if that happens), and if they did one would think that would provide a chance to widen Platform 1. I don't know what you could do with Platform 2 due to the RRL tracks being there, perhaps with the Sunbury line tracks gone the tracks and both platforms could be moved so Platform 2 could be widened from the front instead of the back. I do hope though that something is done to make it more inviting, when the RRL was completed they funded a mural for the front of the station on Childers Street, however sadly that was painted over when the construction of the tunnel portal started. Perhaps re-instate that.

    • @TransportVlog
      @TransportVlog  Рік тому

      Hi Aiden, yes the canopy is a good start! It could definitely do with more shelters! Yes the tracks alongside the tunnel probably won't be used that much after Metro Tunnel, but they could be used for limited stop Werribee/Williamstown services. Hopefully something will happen to improve this station. It's a very poor cousin to the gorgeous South Kensington station in London, and I was a little disappointed when I arrived there for the first time!

    Several people have commented that the museum has been relocated but fail to say where to. I would assume this would be Science Works at Spotswood, which appeared to be in its infancy when I was there ( when the Star Trek exhibition was on show in the 1990s). The nearby pumping station was really worth seeing! It has been 20 years since my last visit to Melbourne, so I am looking forward to seeing it again. An extremely comprehensive video, a far cry from the vague information I could ( not ) find on station entrances for the Sydney Metro particularly North Sydney (Victoria Cross), such as whether there will be subterranean connections to the existing North Sydney station.

    Just a little tip for the City Loop, there are two tunnels that do not change direction at all.
    The Clifton Hill services (the Mernda and Hurstbridge lines) which operate from Platform 1 at the underground stations and from Flinders St, along with platform 9 at Southern Cross always runs clockwise. (Flinders St > Southern Cross > Flagstaff > Melb Central > Parliament, followed by Jolimont)
    And before they join the Metro Tunnel, the Dandenong services (Cranbourne and Pakenham lines) operates from Platform 2 at the underground stations, Southern Cross Platform 12 and normally Flinders St Platform 6; these services always run counter-clockwise (Parliament > Melb Central > Flagstaff > Southern Cross > Flinders St, followed by Richmond)
    Only the Northern Loop trains (Craigieburn & Upfield Lines) regularly run direct between Parliament and Flinders St, and since they do change directions, to go back to either station you would either have to go around the Loop, use a couple of trams, or walk.

    About 30 years ago I evacuated from a train in the Loop between Parliament and Museum. Something happened (can’t remember if it was power or signals) but every train in that tunnel was stuck. So the driver opened the doors and we had to jump down and walk track side to Museum station. It was peak hour. And the freaky thing was you could still hear trains running in the adjacent tunnels. Not sure they’d allow that today as there was no walk way level with the door. People did help others down but not sure about the elderly or disabled.

I would expect the Geelong fast rail project to use the new tunnels under the Yarra river to provide a much shorter connection to Geelong. The current regional rail link through Wydham Vale and Tarniet would be electrified and form part of the western leg of the Suburban Rail Loop. So much of the current LXRA projects that seem to offer nothing much to rail commuters except for nicer stations will start to be seen as the buliding blocks that were required for the overall plan to come together.
