    generation kill
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This has been sitting in my folder for MONTHS now. I couldn't bring myself to upload it because I kept going back to it and second-guessing the whole thing. And for once, my doubts were not about structure or editing choices, but about the subject matter in the first place. Although I've edited my fair share of GenKill, it's always been in bits and pieces - just a slice of it, from a very specific angle. And so this one somehow felt like too much. Too much that can be misread, especially as it is set to a very popular and over-vidded song - one that's used to portray violence by timing it with the beats of the chorus (which I've tried to avoid). I sincerly hope nothing in this glamorizes violence (although some of the Marines in here do) because that's the further thing from my mind. My intention was, in fact, to do the opposite but to do so in a way that wouldn't feel like I was distorting and betraying what the show is at its core - an unsanitizied depiction of combat which, while representing moral complexities, is not meant to be a morality lesson and which certainly doesn't spoon-feed its audience about notions of right and wrong.
In the attempt to not misrepresent this show and its characters, I tried to include as much as possible of the feeling of it- and yes, that also means those lines and attitudes, and jokes especially, that really feel inappropriate or downright insensitive. And they are. And that also means holding back very little in terms of footage selection.
So yes, all of this made me very reluctant to actually upload it, letting weeks go by. I managed to get some distance from it all, waited for a time in which my feelings for GenKill were a little ... less intense. And I suppose that time is now. In fact I don't feel as attached to this edit right now, which I think it's good. Plus I watched that Rudy Reyes clip from the "Once Upon a Time in Iraq' BBC documentary, and that got me right in the stomach and made me a little sick. Another reminder of the fiction-reality divide. Although him being on GenKill is an uncomfortable overlap, so I guess that complicates matters further. The way he answered the 'Was it worth it?' question. Oh boy.
Okay, I'm getting confused again. Just. Should I even put a disclaimer about this OBVIOUSLY representing the show and that the show, while based on real and reported events, is nonetheless a show aka a fictional portrayal and not a documentary? Well.

i think you are one of the only people that can do voiceovers in videos with lyrics and make it not sound like a headache, the way you intertwine it all is so perfect and this is a clear example of allowing both the song and quotes work together to tell your story here??? idk im babbling but thats just watching your amazing videos makes me do!!!

i think i went a little overboard w voiceovers, but i really started out wanting to focus on dialogues and story rather than the music itself. figured everyone is familiar w the song anyway so why not. Thank you!!!

Been in this niche fandom since 2009 - more importantly, I was on my way to pick up my cousin when I got the call on my cellphone that he's going to be deployed as part of the Invasion. Remember my fingers growing cold and my entire body growing frigid. I know what you mean about the fiction/reality divide. Heavy part of my comment aside, thank you for these videos (excellent work, my God), and thank you for writing about your thoughts and feelings in the description. The insight, reminder, etc. is greatly appreciated.

I can understand feeling conflicted about editing this show in the sense that everyone can interpret things differently and one may have watched this series and thought it was glorifying brutality but to be honest? If that’s the case then they missed one of the points of the series. It’s brutal, it’s crass, it’s eye opening but I walked away with an even deeper understanding that the war has always been one of the biggest fuck ups and unfortunately in the process it damaged and inflicted confusion and trauma in their very own proud patriotic men. I can go on and I hope my statement is coming out correctly 😅 anywho I enjoy your GK videos so much. I remember back when the series aired there was the tinyiest of edits for this and now thanks to you there’s so many various ones. I’m sorry I’ve been MIA but I hope you know your edits are always stunning!

I mean, the show is pretty clear. It's just... setting to music some things can be really tasteless. And I truly hope people skip this if they haven't watched the show lol
      Anyway! Thank you! 🌟

It portrays Marines as we are in combat.. we do glorify brutality. We want a war that we can go to and fight our enemies. Some try to call it brainwashing but that would mean that we are weak. I think it is more that they bring out the primal desire for men to fight other men. Some dont understand that as they are born and raised in a peaceful way. Others we were not and we do not desire peaceful ways. I was never and likely never will be as happy again as i was as a Marine in combat.

I know your feelings, but I can assure you, that it's okay. What is not okay it's hiding reality of things how usually media does, so you're not doing something bad here.
It feels harsh and too much, but that's the truth. Mostly that's why I love this show, I think.
Also, you can put this video for adults only if it'll make you feel easier, so the next choice will be on people who open this.
You're brave, I'm really proud of you.

Omg honestly your gen kill videos get me every time! You have a way of showing what's wrong with this war (as the show did too) in a way that's subtle but also in your face, honestly you shouldn't worry about posting this because it doesn't glorify it at all.
    Your talent is exceptional!! 💕

Even as a person who speaks English fluent, I really didn't understand you. Dont get me wrong, I'm not misjudging you, actually I'm trying to understand you. I don't know the show, I had never watched it but I don't understand why it is so hard to say this freaking war was freaking wrong. US military had no right to be in that land, like never, but still terrorized the territory. And STILL, they are in that land from freaking nowhere and STILL it is soo wrong. Under no circumstances.

What I don't understand is how you can watch this video and come away from it saying 'this is in support of Americans'

    • @okopnik
      @okopnik 2 роки тому

Well, "person who speaks English fluent" - your problem isn't so much with language as with rational thinking. Every single war in history is "freaking wrong", and no one has a "right" to be in someone else's land... those statements are obvious to the point of stupidity. Wherever you're from, your country was won by someone's conquest at some point - why aren't you crying about that?
And you're not "trying to understand"; that's a straight-out lie. You missed everything this video and the show demonstrated: both are about the horrible realities of war. Even if you didn't speak English, the music and the scene selection would have made that clear to anyone who was actually *trying* to understand. All you wanted to do was indulge your hatred of America and cover it up by a cheap _faux_ anti-war sentiment. It didn't work.
I find your virtue-signaling and you hypocrisy despicable.

Watch the show. It's anti-war, acknowledges the fuckups Marines make and doesn't hide anything.
