    Have you ever wondered what it’s like to look at a target at 1,000 Yards? It seems so small and far away how could anyone even see it? Well luckily we have some excellent optics available these days but the question is, How much Zoom will I need? It is a great question and I get asked all the time how much I use when going beyond 1,000 Yards and the truth is I really don’t need that much. One thing to keep in mind is zooming in does not make the picture clearer, you can just see the objects easier. I set some targets at 500 Yards and demonstrate different levels of zoom at that distance with the vortex Viper PST 6-24 then we back out to 1,000 Yards to take a look at some really far, small targets. The equivalent of a 1.4” circle at 100 Yards the 14” plates at 1,000 seem impossible to see let alone hit the target! But the biggest reason I run high magnification scopes is to better spot dust trace from bullet impacts that far out. Any questions feel free to ask!

    I learned. The magnification help to see the small print. I used to shoot with a nightforce 5-20x56.
    I swap it for a nightforce 3-10x42.
    Best 'down-scale' scope I never thought I'll say. Quality of the lens helps. If I knew what I know now. I'll pick a fixed scope anytime. Nightforce don't do fixed as far as I know. Pick what's comfortable. You're buying it😁

    Absolutly awesome video! Thank you for taking the time to show what the ranges look like through different magnification.
    So offten people argue you need 24x plus to reach out there, when in actuality you can make it happen with a 10x.
    I only have the chance to shoot past 400yd a few times a year and don't have the time to video it.

      Brendan Marriott All I can remember is the “Baker” target was a 10” circle for the 500 m prone. The “Dog” target simulated the profile of a man in the prone position at the 300 m sitting and kneeling. I can’t recall the size of the target for the 200 m offhand. Seems like it was similar in size to the Baker target. We used a 6 o’clock hold in those days. Later it was changed to a center mass hold.

      @@kennethbailey2616 That's the way to train.....With open sights FIRST...before relying on a scope.
      100 yds with open sights is same as 1000 yds with a 10x scope.

    Great video, man! Looking at getting into long range shooting myself and I was discouraged by the price tags of the high-magnification good-quality optics. • @WestDesertShooter
      @WestDesertShooter  6 років тому +2

      As far as you being able to see, absolutely that scope will do it. And I know what you mean about the crazy prices! Dude a great option is SWFA fixed power scopes. They are all 300$ but they have a 30 mm tube and there turrets have lots of adjustment to get you to 1,000 Yards. Depending on your cartridge choice it may be difficult for you to adjust the scope and do hold overs. By all means try! But down the road an SWFA scope really is a bargain for the beginning long range shooter

    I used a cheap 3-9x42 scope on my hunting rifle. I was running into problems at 400 meters... Turns out the glass didn't let enough light through the scope. I bought a Swarovski X5I 5-25x56 and I am absolutely in love with it, mounted it on my Accuracy International.

    Im very much a beginner, ive only had my long range platform a couple of weeks,prior to this the furthest i had shot was 200m. I m running a Burris xtr2 8-40 ffp with f class moa reticle. I was close to buying a lower powered optic, but at least one of my friends was pushing me for higher mag and im glad i did! Now ive not had the opportunity to stretch this rifle legs past 500m yet (range limit) but up to that even i find it far easier to shoot anything past 100m wit higher mag, im not just talking about scoring hits on steel, because thats very achievable, see guys doing it all the time with milsurps with irons, im talking consistent groups on paper.I really find it far easier to get more consistent point of aim with higher mag, even if we are talking shooting at 100m with a 22lr! I consistently shoot tighter groups at 100m with rifles with decent magnification , say 12-14 than other with 8 or less. Ive got 3 scoped .22lr's to choose from in my safe right now, all sub moa and all have good quality glass, but different power levels. Fixed 4,fixed 8 and 4-12 are the options and when we talking about getting as close to the potential of the rifles, the higer mag sure helps me to get there.
    This is just my experience, im no spring chicken and for sure my eyes arent what they used to be (when i was 20 I could hit birds in the head @20m with irons on an old springer .177!) and i would have found it easier when i was younger for sure!

    A good rule of thumb if you purchase a fixed power scope make it a fixed 10x, but at most 12x. Any stronger than that it will pick up to much mirage if the outside temp is high. For a variable power scope buy 1 power for every 100 yards you mite shoot. For instance. If you mite shoot 1500yrds get a max 15 power scope. I have a 3-18x50 Vortex Razor myself. I have shot over a mile with it. 1 mile = 1760yrds so there for 18 power scope. My target was 12”x12” steel plate. Very easy to see. Hope this helps.

      I respectfully disagree. For shooting pd's or smaller game at 500 yards and over I use 20x power scope and sometimes it feels like I could use more. I say use what YOUR eyes say you need. I'd rather have a 20x variable and turn it down then 15x power and not able to turn it up.

    Two things: Good on you for using a SWFA scope... Those scopes are the best thing going right now in my book, built like tanks with amazing glass. The second thing you pointed out (although not detailed as to why) is how lower magnification can be clearer. You need GOOD glass and coatings to see that far at any magnification, but anything above 10x usually produces a darker our clouded image with cheap glass. With nice glass, the image can hold up to 14-18x depending on the quality and tube diameter. Cheers, keep shooting.

    I'm 65 and a hunter/shooter all my life. Mostly shoot for fun now and still learn something new now and then. Yours was one of the best/clearest reviews of scope magnification and application I've seen and I love to watch vids on guns and scopes.
    Just ordered the Henry 223/556 NATO long ranger lever action. Putting a Arken 4-16x50 ffp moa vpr zero stop illuminated reticle (3mm tube) on top. Check out the Arken scopes. Put one on my Ruger Precision 6.5 creedmoor in the 6-24x50 version and love it.
    I grew up on lever guns so I have a few. I reload so it will be fun developing a load for the Henry. I plan on zeroing with gold dot match ammo (stuff is outstanding).
    Anyway. Great job on your video. I subbed and will be looing at your older stuff. Hope you're still making vids. Well done

    Good informative video,When customers bring up the subject of scope magnification I tell them If your looking at a target at 100yds with a 4x scope the target appears like it would at 25 yds with the naked eye.
    ThenI ask them what power scope they think was used on the 1903A4,M1C,M1D used in WW2 & Korea .When I tell them that the M81 & M82 was only 2.5 power & the M84 was 2.2 they go WOW
    Yes and those Snipers engaged & hit targets up to 1000yds.
    Carlos Hathcock favored the 8 power Unertl scope,Chuck Mawhinney used a Redfield 3x9 Accurange scope But he kept it on 9x so the POI wouldn’t change.
    A good quality fixed power scope is actually better than a adjustable power scope
    As with a low quality adjustable scope POI can change going from low to higher powers.

  • @ncshpfox
    @ncshpfox 6 років тому +2

    I think the advantage of a higher power scope is to use it as a dual purpose. You can crank it up to see more detail if needed or as a spotting scope. And adjust down for a steadier reticle and shot. But if needed you have the extra zoom. But it isn’t a must. A good 4-14 will get most people where they need to be. Great video.

    Can you use a magnifying glass on your eye to get even more zoom on existing scope?

    I really didn't understand how little zoom you needed until I took my 6-24X50 out to the range for the first time and could see my hits at 500 yards perfectly fine. Anybody that watched that video and was underwhelmed by the lower magnification, seeing it on video is only about 1/3 as zoomed as it is in real life since the lens takes up way more of your vision than your computer or phone screen does.

    Is that U mount not available anymore? Been trying to find one, but can't seem to find their site, or way to purchase it. Great video by the way. Wish I had that kind of area to practice at.

    I like the high power Scopes, I say if you cannot see what you want to hit then why pull the trigger. JMO. I am not saying lower power scopes are bad I just like to see as much through the scope as I can. Man I love you .243 performance. You got me hooked

    I have a 4.5-18x FFP scope on an SR25 that I shoot out to 1000 yards. I usually am always on or around 18x, Unless I’m shooting under 500 yards.
    I love the 500-600 yard range at 14x, seeing the bullet vapor trail, and clearly seeing hits

      That’s pretty much what I do, I crank up the magnification if I have it. But I usually don’t buy scopes with more than 20x

    Logan. I shoot 1000-1250 with a Leupold VX3 3.3x10
    when shooting out to 1760+ I set the Vortex PST to 24x
    People get hung up on more magnification. Quality glass trumps all.

      Yes sir I agree with you! I think many people have this idea that they need a telescope to even see the target but truthfully a 10x will get just about any distance done. The reason I like zoom is for spotting dust trace from a light slow moving bullet at 5,000 feet away.

    • @coatsbrothersfirearms8406
      @coatsbrothersfirearms8406 6 років тому

      I agree Logan. I have the benefit of my brother spotting for me with a Leupold Mark IV spotting scope. I know you go shooting alone a lot of the time. Big difference.

      You are correct, glass quality is far more important, unfortunately the PST has horrible glass.

      Horrible? Really? That's a bit of an exaggeration. I got 2; 1FP and 2FP both are fine tested to over 1400 yards. They track great and clarity for price point, is superb in my opinion. Sure its no Swarovski, Hensoldt or Schmidt and Bender, but dude for most glass under 1K to get to 1,000 or to a mile? their value can't be beat.

    Gotta be able to see it to shoot it. I've got near perfect vision but I shoot a 4-16 power scope on my guns and have it at 16 for anything 100 yards and above. It's just what I'm comfortable with.

    Question? should you shot on the same power for sighting in and hunting? will changing powers in the field changer accuracy ?
