I think the constant need for growth in all industries is just so goofy. You can he profitable by millions or even billions of dollars but if it's not as much as you think it should be, then it's a failure. Completely silly

It's because of shareholders. Employees are just looking for a regular and reasonable salary, but shareholders buy up a controlling stake in the company and steer all the decision making towards short term growth so they can get a quick return on investment. They don't care about long term prospects, like trust and goodwill from customers, or having loyal veteran employees. They're the ones who are pushing for half baked releases, predatory monetisation and over reliance on contract workers. By the time these idiotic decisions have done their damage they've already cashed out and made a profit.

People may quick to blame "capitalism", but this problem has existed for thousands of years before capitalism came to be.
      Ecclesiastes 5:10-20
      10 Whoever loves money never has enough;
whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with their income.
      This too is meaningless.
      11 As goods increase,
so do those who consume them.
And what benefit are they to the owners
except to feast their eyes on them?
12 The sleep of a laborer is sweet,
whether they eat little or much,
but as for the rich, their abundance
      permits them no sleep.
13 I have seen a grievous evil under the sun:
wealth hoarded to the harm of its owners,
14 or wealth lost through some misfortune,
so that when they have children
there is nothing left for them to inherit.
15 Everyone comes naked from their mother’s womb,
and as everyone comes, so they depart.
They take nothing from their toil
that they can carry in their hands.
16 This too is a grievous evil:
As everyone comes, so they depart,
      and what do they gain,
since they toil for the wind?
17 All their days they eat in darkness,
with great frustration, affliction and anger.
18 This is what I have observed to be good: that it is appropriate for a person to eat, to drink and to find satisfaction in their toilsome labor under the sun during the few days of life God has given them-for this is their lot. 19 Moreover, when God gives someone wealth and possessions, and the ability to enjoy them, to accept their lot and be happy in their toil-this is a gift of God. 20 They seldom reflect on the days of their life, because God keeps them occupied with gladness of heart.

That's the problem with public companies. All about the short term. If more big companies stayed private like Valve, they wouldn't be as obsessed about growth every year. Valve is more incentivized to play the long game. Which is why they're giving out Steam OS & continue to optimize the Steam Deck experience. More data and cash for future projects like the Steam Deck 2.

We're seeing this with the movie industry and movies are making at least 300-500mill profit after advertisements and such so that should be considered good right, RIGHT but it's because every studio now thinks they can make MARVEL money and it's simply not feasible, Fall Guy, Furiosa and TF One all to me did perform pretty well but none of these were touching 600mill or 1B like come on one had an actual good female lead over shadowed by people's misconceptions, TF One a surprisingly good storyline ruined by it's initial marketing making it look childish and the movie being animated makes it lesser in some movie goers eyes and Fall Guy was touted to have a big star(s) but you need more that just that to sell a movie.

I don't understand how we can expect games to keep getting bigger, better, and more innovative every year-constantly outdoing the last-while also demanding that their price remains stuck at $60. Game development costs have skyrocketed, with studios investing more time, talent, and resources than ever before to meet ever-growing expectations. Yet, unlike other industries where inflation and increased production costs lead to price adjustments, gaming has been held to an outdated standard. If we truly want groundbreaking experiences, it only makes sense that game prices should reflect the immense effort that goes into creating them.

You know what happens when people have less money to spend? They cut back on luxuries and hobbies. If the game industry Jacks up their games to $100 a lot of games and studios are going to collapse entirely. 1 AAA game does not equal in value to another AAA. GTA may get away with it with its perception of gaming value, but it also potentially harms GTA at launch as not all gamers earn the same income. GTA online made billions so its interesting to see whether they would risk the launch of their next title by increasing its price tag to a new industry standard.

When the standard practice is to release an unfinished, bug-filled game at release, it's only common sense to wait a few months once it's on sale. What doesn't help is that they make the games expensive by focusing on better graphics, higher polygon counts, high quality visuals in realism, and being longer in hours. Taking more longer to develop games and resources, with the reason of having games as online service only, having microtransactions, or having a higher price tag with multiple editions and missing content in the regular version. Logic suggests they should just make AAA games smaller.
(Of course that would require managers who're able to understand and implement such a concept,
while also satisfying the finance aspects of its implementation.
When lately, unfortunately, AAA gaming publishers' managers showed the opposite of competence, in general.)
AAA games have been already costing too much for years,
in terms of the time needed for players to enjoy them to the end.
That's in the numbers, and it cannot be denied.
Virtually nobody plays those big games to the end,
let alone playing them multiple times,
as it would be mandatory in order to explore a satisfactory chunk
of the total content put into of those games by the developers.
Smaller AAA games would take less time and people to be made,
so they would be less costly to produce.
No need to increase the price-tag, and the revenue would go up none the less.
    Thanks for your videos!

And coming from a market that already pays $90-$100 via that recent increase for the base version of most games, it ends up only making me more choosy and I often wait for the prices to go down. I'm not going to pay $150 for a game if the price increases again. But if the price does increase again, then I think publishers need to seriously rethink how they're packaging their games. Give them a bit more for their money, and maybe rethink the microtransactions, because when you pay $100 or more for a game, it doesn't feel great to be asked to spend more.

I know for a fact that the only game I have bought full price on release in the last 15 years is Bomb Rush Cyberfunk, and that was only $40 on release. I have not paid any more than that for any game in 15 years.

One of the problems with these publishers and developers getting so big is the red tape. Having to schedule a meeting to get approval for every tiny change is a big reason game development time has grown so out of control. When a development studio was just 30 people in a little office, communication was so much faster and easier. Publishers weren't investing hundreds of millions of dollars into projects so you didn't need to get approval for every little detail. But as games got more complex, more people were needed. More people = higher budget and the higher the budget, the more involved the publisher wants to be. It's now grown into this broken industry we have today.

I think the problem with the $70 retail price isn't just that games are more expensive now, because we had $60 games for 15 years, it couldn't last forever.
The problem is $70 games will still release purposefully incomplete. Games can have plenty of content and be released with all that content ready, but publishers don't wanna do that. Most of the time anyway. We will still see content immediately advertized as DLC the moment the game comes out at $70 and that DLC will still run you upwards of the price of the game itself on top. When we first got $60, we usually got a complete game. We won't always have that with $70 games, or even commonly have it.
And games going beyond $70 soon is asinine. We just got the price increase to $70, sales will plummet if the highest price keeps going

Don't look at eBay listing prices. Look at eBay Sold at prices. That's what actually matters.

If game companies want to up the prices on games they need to make it worth the price bump. You spent the better part of a decade and an exorbitant amount of money making it? That sounds like a you problem. If you want my money for that game it needs to offer a proportional return. It's why there's a few games out there that people play the crap out of and rarely switch off: it's worth their time and money. $80? If I'm gonna beat it in a week, the gameplay is meh, it's a buggy mess, cheaters are running rampant ect you've wasted your time and money not mine no thanks.

Great video Matty. The world economy is in sambles. People in NA are having problems with housing and food. In Europe food prices have sky rocketed. I highly doubt people will pay over $60 for a video game. Also, technically, Rockstars last release was Red Dead Redemption on PC and if you read the reviews people say an over-priced 15-20 year old game, buy it at 50% off and I agree with every single one of those people. It's just greed at that point selling an old game that wasn't even remastered properly.

There are just SOOOO many gaming options today. It’s not just multiple platforms anymore with some exclusive games. There are literally hundreds of mobile games every year, there are things like GamePass easily making smaller games available, and of course you’ve got older games that are still available now at steep discounts. I have only a limited amount of time to play video games each week, so I’m generally only playing one or two at a time. I have great games released 5 years ago I still haven’t touched yet. A new game has to be amazing (or at least highly anticipated to me) for me to pick it up day one at full price.

Rockstar could pull off a $100.00 game, but as you pointed out, the bigger issue is that we will buy less games overall and be more choosey if that’s where the industry goes.
Ubisoft, EA, etc would take successful sales of GTA at $100.00 as a green light, but the issue is a lot of us aren’t going to buy their games for $100.00, right now a lot of us might buy a mediocre Ubisoft game or EA game at $70.00, but we won’t for $100.00, so they’ll just be shooting themselves in the foot.

The fact that remakes & remasters of ps2 and xbox 360 era games are thing atm tells me that modern games have really dropped the ball when it comes to quality and innovation. The reason most people would be willing to pay 80,90,100 bugs on GTA6 is that (despite all of Rockstars faults), when it comes to mainline entries of the series the studio has not disappointed so far. Each new game is a big step up to the previous. I feel like they are literally one of the only studios doing this.

Success is simple - know your audience, produce a product that's high quality, is fun to spend your limited time with, tells a compelling story, and transports you to place outside of your daily existence. Selling the sizzle only gets you so far, and gamers ultimately speak with their money if the product is worthy of a $70/80 price tag. Recent examples of losing the plot includes companies like BioWare (and Bethesda to some degree) believing they know better than gamers, and that's when they really lose not just the plot, but the real lessons learned around why their recent products didn't meet their unfounded expectations.

Honestly, this may sound crazy but I don’t mind studios committing to the remake model. If you can put your whole heart and soul into a true and faithful remake (of OLD games, not remakes from 2010/2015) I think you can do a lot of good. A remake from the 90s or 00s can be really refreshing. FF7 for example. I love it so far even tho I know it’s not as faithful to the original story as some would like. Imagine a KOTOR remake. An Oblivion remake. etc. just the great games of yesteryear that have a foundation of greatness but were made so long ago the industry couldn’t really do them justice

In a world where we can have a life changing experience with a game for dozens or hundreds of hours in exchange for the price of a 6 pack of beer, and basically never run out of these experiences if you're an adult with a job who can only play for a few hours a week. The price of games is almost irrelevant, it's the time spend, quality, and sentiment towards the developer that matters.
Your Larians, your Obsidians, maybe your CDPRs, are trading on their properties, their names, not just whether their games are free or $10, or $60. Or how many hundreds of hours their games are.
