Try listening to some properly good jazz recordings for example: Miles davis, John Coltrane. Some later stuff and I promise that if you close your eyes and really listen, you will fall in love.

The title of this video is really a rhetorical question, it's purpose is not to absolutely define jazz, if you came here looking for that, then keep digging, and you will find it can't really be defined , or put into a box. This video does a great job of explaining many of the key concepts and attributes of this music including : 1) it is very much alive and always changing 2) It is a reflection of America's culture and history 3) It is about Freedom 4) At it's core is a dialogue, a conversation between musicians ... One thing I think they did miss though was more focus and attention on the Blues......

I dont really agree on the number 2.
We cant deny that jazz was born in America. But it has evolved so much that it does not always reflect the american culture n history. It is true for the classic jazz, in which we can also see how it is still related to blues so much. But i dont think that is the case when we see the more modern types of jazz, or even latin jazz, bossanova, etc. I would say its some kind of sub genre that could be influenced by other cultures in the world.
I would say jazz is freedom in expression and improvisations. But even this cannot really define what jazz is. We need to feel it when listening to know if it is jazz.

I personally dig Oscar Peterson’s album “Night Train” but it depends on what kind of jazz you like. If you’re into WWII swing era stuff, check out Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, and Duke Ellington. For later stuff (1950s and 60s jazz), look at Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock, Canonball Adderley, Oscar Peterson, etc. many of the jazz greats we know of today came from that era of jazz.

I seem to know what people mean by Jazz. But the more I look, the more I listen, the more I doubt I know what Jazz really is. What I have seen in this video is the stereotipical or the classical of jazz, which I am not really into.
What about smooth jazz? Then Brazilian jazz? Acid jazz? N many more. Are these jazz? Because they are labeled as jazz too. But somehow theyre different. At least my soul resonates differently upon hearing these jazzes.
So is jazz what I say is jazz? In the end we would still be asking, what is jazz?

Miles Davis was not exactly renowned to be the most democratic person in his band. Still, we regard him as one of the most influential artists of all time. So, the idea that jazz is democratic, although fascinating, does not hold true against real events and people. What I think is more correct is that jazz i as born to be accepting anybody in, as long as you put your soul in it and groove like never before. This is what jazz feels to me, hearing the stories of the past musicians. It is tolerant, it is humane and humanitarian. Who cares if it is not democratic after all. Davis earned his authority through his actions and music. And also, he was still an human being, fallable as any other.

My husband realised and was screaming "OH NO, OH GOD NO, WHAT'S HAPPENING TO YOU, OH GOD HELP US PLEASE ANY ONE, OH GOD" as the most frantic jazz was playing and the lights were flashing. When he got up to run to the bar for help he slipped in the puddle of faeces and it went up him.

"Jazz came out of the African American community experience and and much of that is based on the black church."
Okay -- except the majority of black church music was, and is. playing and singing white European spirituals.
The woman says "Jazz is still happening". Ad lib ensemble small band (7 pieces) used to be the Black and white mainstay from 1917 until 1931. It did have a limited revival from 1939 to around 1990s. But it is definitely tiny right now with very little activity, and most of that by old white men. The majority of what this video plays is big band "jazz" where the actual jazz is read.
He says "the orchestra takes the music off the page..." So really the main invention is by the composer and arranger. Almost any play can be replaced and it will be good. But the early stuff depended on unique personal contributions. Other than a few die-hard kids throughout the country, we're not hearing much hot brilliance these days.

I discovered that what I was used to was smooth jazz which isn’t as messy and maybe swing which is highly messy. So basically I only like jazz elements, especially high energy elements (like in swing not smooth jazz) since the songs I hear those elements in are not messy and clear in their melody. Even the Lofi swing playlist I listen to for studying irks me a bit with some of the songs because it sounds jumbled in some bits of the songs. Didn’t know it was intentional until researching.

Like you I've been listening to more Jazz and I'm starting to like it more and more but I prefer certain subgenres. For example, I liked Marcus Miller who plays an electric guitar. He's a bit more coherent and his performance gives me high energy vibes. I can't put my finger on it yet as to why I like it but it sounds a bit like a foreign language, in terms of how instruments in a song speak if you will. It's also very relaxing and unfatiguing to listen to for hours and I have noticed that it takes a lot of mental energy to process regular songs with vocals now because you also have to interpret lyrics and and not always you can relate to the same old trite stories. Great as background music too when you're studying or working!

Cas Perry yes that is true. I guess the more we discover the more we understand and perhaps fall in love with the genre or sub genres. Thanks for the suggestion. I agree that it takes energy from me to listen to music with vocals especially cuz I will sing to them or pay attention to the lyrics. That’s why I have that jazz swing playlist for studying.

mmmmm...well I will have to say that call and answer comes from african traditions wayyyy before the Jazz era and was adapted by the "church" . I dont think the church music can take credit for call and answer. That POV comes from someone that has only a limited perspective of music history or is trying to piggy back on something for some reason or other. Also ...the word "America" --- That is a continent. Not a country. This smacks of nationalism and false patriotism. Jingoistic hog wash. If you think improvisation in music started in the USA then you basically don't know anything about music. The end.

And I hate the fact they are trying to say things like "Oh, it American thing, its African American culture (originated), and equality and things Blah Blah Blah..." They are just embarrassing themself and trying to narrow things down. NOT EVERYTHING HAS TO BE POLITICAL! And by saying that, where should I put Chinese and Japanese jazz band who also has their own styles? Like they are just not qualified as "Jazz enough" automatically because they are not American? F U American culture.

@@blatancyproductions8246 Lol, how are you mad over the fact that Jazz comes from black Americans? It's a historical fact.
I mean you can find different versions of pizza all over the world, but pizza is still of italian origin. Same thing with Jazz it will always be of black American origin lol.

@@Sweet-Rat-Milk I’m just tired of the African American-themed activity/movement, they have their point but now in school in northwestern America, everyone is doing their “black pride” stuff and it is painful to watch and pretend to participate as a minority here (as a Chinese)… I know the tragedy and hardship some African Americans have experienced, namely the early origin of the jazz and how famous musicians treated by police in 60s; but at this point, I don’t really care, I’m tired about giving extra care to the morbid relationship between different colored but to focus on the music itself, especially when this video showed up in the second day of my music-making class and all I want to do is create Mario kart music.
See, the video is speaking more than it’s origin
I’m sorry for my irresponsible comment, maybe every art has some thing to do with politics, maybe it represent some symbol that supposed to change the world, maybe it belongs something bigger than I am; but the all I want to do with my music is to make it sounds cool, and sometimes it may represent oppression or domination, and sometimes piece and tranquility… I don’t care. I’m okey if you’re telling me that I should slow down the tempo or play more in sync, but in terms making music, nothing more.
Once again, I recognize it’s origin, it’s back story in 20th century, which gives the weight to listening classic jazz albums, and I’m still that pissed student
