Johannesburg777 what really strikes me as funny is the contempt others seem to hold for Americans when they try to educate themselves on other cultures. Most US citizens do not travel outside of the country (too poor). It’s not like virtually everywhere else where so many cultures and states populate a dense area, and share borders, forcing cultural exposure and exchanges. What do Americans get? Canadians who say “ayyy”. Otherwise, they speak english and imitate our hegemony. Lots of American celebrities are actually Canadian. And Every American can order from taco bell and chipotle fluently
; we’ve all swung at a piñata and drank tequila (even if in a margarita). I’m Pretty sure we got the Mexican culture down (we celebrate cinco de mayo and murder children at the same rate as the mayans). And anyone who says donkey shows aren’t real has never visited Tijuana. Most of us are trapped here and when we do meet outsiders who could educate us (rather than the propaganda we receive) it’s this kind of contempt we are met with. And with so much of the world imitating us, the need to learn about other cultures seems like busy work.

J Denmark I mean just because she casually surfs doesn't mean she knows all the good surf spots around the world. Many casual cali surfers don't know that there are places in Europe with amazing surf spots they mostly think California, Hawaii, and Australia.

When a person that has never left their home island/city/rural community, I don't tend to extrapolate from their questions, a generalization of an entire population.
But then again, I am not a politician or comedian.
I am not a surfer, but having been around a few, my experience is when they ask about waves, they actually mean really good surfing waves.
I am a kayaker and have been using surf skis since the "80's. A lot of kayakers/canoe rs aren't aware of them. I don't feel like they are ignorant in general, just because they didn't know surf skis originated in SA and Australia as lifeguard aids.
And finally, surfing has been around forever in Hawaii, spread to Cali, FL, AUS and SA then made its way to the colder regions of the globe. Did you know that we have great waves in Maine? Clean barrels every incoming tide. Plus tidal bore waves you can ride every twelve hours. Or that we have tides of up to 50 feet? Four times a day?

Lol I have the same experiences when I go to the states... I was once approached by a girl who was 100% serious when she told me she really wanted to visit a foreign country, and she thought Canada would be a good place... so I was like “ya that would be a good start” then she stated this “I am just worried I won’t understand the people there you know, like I heard you speak a dialect between English and French... it’s called Canadian right?”
I was shocked... I mean I could see where the confusion would have come from, we do have 2 national languages but really? Anyways before I could correct her she continued, “like I just don’t think I could go to a non English country... so do you think I would have a difficult time?” ... I was trying so hard not to laugh as I replied with a “ya, might not be right for you then.” 😝
On another occasion when I was fourteen I was traveling through Texas, Sunday rolled around so I went to church and the Sunday school teacher was so impressed I was from Canada... then she asked me where it was located on the map... ya... so when I told her it was just above the states she didn’t believe me because she thought it was an ocean above it... lol I told her it wasn’t and she didn’t believe me, her argument was that it was blue on the map so it was the ocean and Canada must be above that somewhere... and I was just sitting there in awe at her stupidity
You should have told her that Canada is directly south of Detroit, Michigan (which it is). That really would have thrown her!
Still, while someone from Vancouver or Toronto wouldn't be all that different, you have to admit that a Quebecois would seem pretty foreign to your average American. Haha!

I'm from London, Ontario a mere 2 hours from Detroit. I have been asked if we still have snow in the summer. I guess we have a latitude line that divides our polar climate from their tropical climate? We're only 2 hrs away and we actually have warmer weather, with higher humidity levels, in the summer. Too funny. I have also been told I speak perfect English with not a trace of a French accent. 🤷♀️ I have to say though, that they are always very nice, even though they don't know much about their neighbours.
