I mean, off course, I know this but while watching the show I often didn't realise how old it is. Because the characters are about my age but they are from a whole generation back in time...
I'm curious to know what people think of this dilemma. Were Monica and Chandler in the right, or were Ross and Rachel justified in insisting they stay regardless of their weekend plans?
Rachel and Ross were in the wrong. You never have to have a birthday party on the day of, let alone for a one year-old who still needs naps. They were being weird about it.

I'm glad everyone agrees because I found it rude and wrong of Ross and Rachel to force everyone to stay when they all had other plans. Obviously Chandler and Monica's weekend getaway was important to them. Exactly... Birthday parties can be celebrated on a different day, especially for a one year old. I am from India and we don't celebrate any birthdays with thatt much importance but there's always some specific 21 or some day birthday according to individual culture that is celebrated very lavishly . My first birthday was a hige eveent but after thatt all birthdays were just my 4 family memebers and any friends if any . And its not like they didn't know . Everyone knows she is gonna turn 1 . Ross and Rachel are good depictions of people with a personality deficit called narcissism - that everyone is about them, and people have to give up their own pleasures for them. How can it be better to stay doing something I dont want, resentful at my friends for demanding it, facing another Monday when I'm going to be tired, yet put on a good face and pretend to be cheerful, like all the other fakes America is so full of? Nobody plans a weekend getaway without advance planning and if your godchild's/niece's first birthday is coming up, you check with the parents about their plans. Personally, I do not believe 1 y.o should have birthday parties.... and usually its a bunch of adults at the damn party. Stupid practice. Take photos, day at the park or some kiddie fun.
Monica and Chandler were so awful here. Emma's first birthday is once in a lifetime, it doesn't matter that she won't remember it. It's the first time, very important, and they are godparents! But Emma's first birthday is only once and the memories of this day with friends and family will stay with them forever.

Real selfish to want to take a vacation together that probably required planning ahead, scheduling with everything in life to make sure they had time to go for ONE WEEKEND just to themselves.
