  • NORTH LINCOLNSHIRE PARISH #35: WORLABY
Worlaby lies 6 miles to the south-west of Barton-Upon-Humber and 5 miles north-east of Brigg in North Lincolnshire. For the third episode in a row, we’re in the Low Villages.
Again, it lies on the B1204, to the east of the River Ancholme. It should not be confused with another Lincolnshire settlement of the same name in East Lindsey, which falls within Maidenwell’s boundaries
Both places are likely connected through the derivation of the name. Worlaby means “Wulfric’s farmstead" - Wulfric being an old English name, whilst the Viking influence in the area adds the “-by” suffix
Worlaby used to be part of the Elsham and Worlaby Estate, which was owned by Kings College, Cambridge University. That’s a key historical point relevant to most of this episode.
Worlaby has a number of features which are listed buildings and these include the church of St Clement and Worlaby Hospital - almshouses founded by John Belasyse - built in 1663
The hospital is off limits for filming but the most notable local landmark certainly isn’t. That would be a stone fountain, located at Fountain Corner to the Northeast of the village
Between the village and the Ancholme is Worlaby Carrs, an area of wet grassland that acts as sanctuary for wintering fowl. The proposal of a wind farm in 2011 on the Carrs was met with local opposition
There’s more than meets the eye here. Lets see what’s on offer!

At the bottom of The Hill there's some newish houses that were built late 80s early 90s, some family friends owned the house that's next to those new houses, if I remember rightly they sold some of their land to the company that built the houses. There's actually a picture of me in their garden in the early 80s long before the houses were built.

Yes those houses aren't featured (I don't think) but yes they are indeed where you say.

I feel a bit sorry for the artist having his work turned down, then accepted only for it to end up hidden. Lovely place Worlaby all the same.
