  • We’re in the field examining barnacles, which make up the class Cirripedia. There are over twelve thousand species of barnacles, most of which live intertidally attached to hard substrates. When the tide is out they close their calcareous shell to prevent desiccation, and when the tide comes in they extend their cirri to feed. There are two groups of barnacles the acorn barnacles and the goose barnacles. The most common is the acorn barnacles which can grow in dense concentrations such as the common rock barnacle Semibalanus balanoides. One fascinating thing about barnacles is how they reproduce. They are hermaphroditic with fertilization taking place through a penis that can be up to twenty times the length the barnacle’s body!

    An absolute menace! The scourge of the sea and to any boat owner.
    I bought my dad a 6m fishing boat for his 60th birthday. Once we took it to the sea and after ONE outing, there were a few barnacles on there!
    Nasty, sharp things that can cut your leg in the sea, a drag to ships, increasing fuel consumption and a huge deadweight for turtles.

    Good video but it would have been even better if you covered the topic about their impact on the environment and animals, do they pose danger when they attached to other animals such as turtles and whales, I've heard they're pain on ship because they keep attaching and ships use some special coating against them.

    • @DivingWithMatt
      @DivingWithMatt  5 років тому +5

      This is more of just a quick overview of what barnacles are, in the future we plan on making some videos about those topics. Adding them into this one would have made it a bit long. I haven't heard about the coating on ships but doesn't surprise me there is one. I do know that a lot of people scrape them off each season or they send divers down to scrape them off every now and then.

      Little bastards is definitely the appropriate term for zebra mussels. They have caused all kinds of problems in the great lakes and are one of the best examples of how introducing a new species to an area can be a bad idea.

      The Abyss The Great Lakes are making a healthy return. Beaches in Toronto are now swimmable (mostly) due to less e coli in the water. Tougher environmental laws really helped out too.
