Barnacles | In The Field

- We’re in the field examining barnacles, which make up the class Cirripedia. There are over twelve thousand species of barnacles, most of which live intertidally attached to hard substrates. When the tide is out they close their calcareous shell to prevent desiccation, and when the tide comes in they extend their cirri to feed. There are two groups of barnacles the acorn barnacles and the goose barnacles. The most common is the acorn barnacles which can grow in dense concentrations such as the common rock barnacle Semibalanus balanoides. One fascinating thing about barnacles is how they reproduce. They are hermaphroditic with fertilization taking place through a penis that can be up to twenty times the length the barnacle’s body!

She talked about genitalia without feigning the whole "I have to call this gross" nonsense. Respect.
Thanks John, I tried to make it interesting without sensationalizing the facts.

I here because of that video in which a guy removes barnacles from the shell of a turtle 🐢
Why does she sound like the female version of Chills??

Dude that is so accurate

I said the same lmao
Oh man
An absolute menace! The scourge of the sea and to any boat owner.
I bought my dad a 6m fishing boat for his 60th birthday. Once we took it to the sea and after ONE outing, there were a few barnacles on there!
Nasty, sharp things that can cut your leg in the sea, a drag to ships, increasing fuel consumption and a huge deadweight for turtles.
The turtles made me look this up.
Bit surprised its alive, tho the sea houses allot of crazy shit...
I love them, I have some growing on the glass of my 55 gallon. The ones that attach to rocks are fascinating, I don’t really like the species that attach to animals.
Thank you for the proper and scientific use of all words as well as smiling at the start of the vid, it really is contagious!
Thanks your comment made me smile!
I randomly questioned what barnacles were and this video answered all the questions i had. Thank you and great job
This was the video I have been waiting for
Was wondering if you would see it haha
Her voice reminds me of Chef John from Food Wishes.
thanks for giving us your knowledge, keep going dear abyss
Thanks Kiarash!
I love the info, but...please...change the vocal rhythm. It is so distracting. Each sentence has the same rise and fall of pitch and tempo. A more natural conversational tone would make this perfect.
great information, diction could use some work though.
it's really not that hard to just speak normally like a human, yeah there is speech impediments but she is intentionally trying to do the "narration voice" and it's super annoying.
Wow, I always tought barnacles were moluscs or worms, not arthropods. Living and learning.
Same. They're pretty sessile for an arthropod
I learned recently that mollusks, with the exception of cephalopods, have no brain in the traditional sense.
Well done. Thanks.
“Number 5. Burger King foot lettuce”
Leave 😂
So its not just me lol
These things are so cool but they freak me the fuck out with all the little holes ahhh
Edit: the fact that they're crustaceans absolutely blows my mind... like wtf does the common ancestor of a barnacle and a crab look like? Questions, questions, questions...
Man, these guys are lazy AF....
My type of crowd.
managed to make it to the end
Very nice. I taught my daughter what barnacles are. Thank you

It is great details on macro organisms . It would be better to set some advantages and disadvantages of these organisms
I was wondering if you would mention reproduction... always causes a reaction in class when we review this topic :-)
I found snails growing out of them at the beach and me, my friend, and her little brother made homes for them
She has the sound dialect like the guy from food wishes!! 🤫
Yes! Thank you, I couldn't figure out where I'd heard that speech pattern before!
Why is everyone hating on her voice? It's pretty good and understandable and she could convey the necessary info.
She was forcing her voice, which sounded strained, unpleasant. She needs a better microphone.
Ahí es donde tienen que estar, en las rocas!!!!
She is cute so is her accent ❤️
Do you know if a biofilm has been invented to keep barnacles from growing on things people don't want them to, like ships?
IN THE FIELD WIDDIT 💯
How she talk was soo unique
Nice presentation, I hope you get an A.
Had to make sure cloud wasn’t capping with that video
I want to search barnacle too, because i want to know about it closer. Thanks explanation very clear👍
I used to be scared of barnacles and now I am again
Very interesting
This was so cool! I love these In The Field videos so much!
Although the image of a penis 20x bigger than the barnacle is a little much😂🙈
They are pretty fun to make, were trying to keep them short and with less polish so they are quicker to produce.
I heard her mention periwinkle, but when I search it show flower instead.
Hi Veasna, here is a link to our periwinkle video if you would like to learn more about them: ua-cam.com/video/TDLV_56vFo8/v-deo.html
I also noticed if you search "periwinkle" the flower comes up first but if you search "Periwinkles" the sea snail comes up. You can also search "Littorina littorea" for them.
Hope this helps :)
Them barnacles get it poppin tho.
Barnacles are the only animal on this planet that makes me gag and makes my skin scrawl. I can never look into one
I thought barnacles were just a moldish substance like fungi.
Sister you are really very sweet and beautiful.. thank you so much for this information.. 😊 loads of love from your younger brother from India..😊😊
Now I'm going to search periwinkles
Yeah, she sounds like science.. i
This is great, thanks 😊

The last thing you'd want on your intertidal bank is some barnacle's gametes, but as it turns out, that might be what you get.
2:47 and 2:53 DID YOU CATCH THAT 😅😭
What is the type of barnacle in half-life 2?
Same
Good video 👍 may suggest for you not to sit like that ..your muscles will be stressed and could affect your body and mind .. surely you'll know what I'm talking about soon.
They can grow in your skin
She talk like those who ppl in scary videos for kids talk

How are these guys crustaceans?
This visit is thanks to Patrick Cloud
The history of spongebob's cursed word.
Pat Led me here😂😭
Female version of Chills
I didn't know they were crustaceans
Good video but it would have been even better if you covered the topic about their impact on the environment and animals, do they pose danger when they attached to other animals such as turtles and whales, I've heard they're pain on ship because they keep attaching and ships use some special coating against them.
This is more of just a quick overview of what barnacles are, in the future we plan on making some videos about those topics. Adding them into this one would have made it a bit long. I haven't heard about the coating on ships but doesn't surprise me there is one. I do know that a lot of people scrape them off each season or they send divers down to scrape them off every now and then.
One day at band camp....
mannn this is interesting. i thought barnacles were plants lol
I search it up
This is a load of barnacles
Hi person in video? Why does it sound like everytime you speak youre asking me a question? I remember a youtuber? That sounds the very same way?

Mermaid Man And Barnacle Boy
Would it hurt if one bit me?
Barnacles don't have teeth so they can't bite you, but their shell can be sharp if you touch or step on them.
At least if a barnacle attaches itself to me I can say.......
She talks like Jan Brady from the Brady bunch
Thank Wikipedia
Please don't talk about genitalia. Please don't talk about genitalia. PLEASE DON'T TALK ABOUT GENITALIA!!!
F*
At least we didn't clickbait it ;)
barnacle genitalia is the most interesting piece of information you will ever learn
Uhh...that's wrong. There's other fish names that are as awkward.

Disgusting little creatures. Here in Toronto, we have our own "barnacles". They are called Zebra mussels and I hate them. Little bastards cover everything.
Anyway, I am really enjoying the content, especially that last series. Keep up the great work.
Yeah there is something really odd about them. May have to do a more in depth video at some point on them.
Little bastards is definitely the appropriate term for zebra mussels. They have caused all kinds of problems in the great lakes and are one of the best examples of how introducing a new species to an area can be a bad idea.
The Abyss The Great Lakes are making a healthy return. Beaches in Toronto are now swimmable (mostly) due to less e coli in the water. Tougher environmental laws really helped out too.
Zebra mussles and the Asian carp are still huge problems though.
however zebra mussels are mollusks and not crustaceans like barnacles
Did you really say “these ones”?
I noticed that, too. I wondered if it was something she grew up saying.
This girl sounds like the female version of chills
I have a friend who talked like this. I find it very cute.
Good for you, anime profile picture.
Her voice makes this Unbearable
That voice is worst than barnacles 😖
