    I just ADORE Bloodstone Genuine and I use it all the time. It's fabulous for rocks and tree trunks (especially Australian gum trees).

    I'm so glad you compared the Bloodstone with the Hematite, as I always wondered why DS kept producing paints that were so similar. I do like the warmth of the Bloodstone, but as I mentioned in your previous video, I don't use these much because they don't reproduce well in print, so I only use them for fun and personal painting. Really enjoying this series of yours, DocOto! Thank you so much for taking the time!! Hoping all is well with you and your family! ~ xo Mark

    In addition to being pigment nerd I am also a word third so I love hearing the descriptions but Daniel Smith can come up with for his patients. Such creative writing!

      Agreed, it's part of the artistry, describing paint for artists should be inspiring rather than a clinical account. That's why I prefer getting watercolors mostly from small businesses like DS and MG, and handmade paints from individuals.

    Love the review and the comparison (will not go into the hardness and composition off... this time). For me, as an owner of many stones and objects from what these pigments are made of I find every pigment and outcome amazing :) no matter how similar. And yes, I do paint, I am a watercolorist. I am refraining myself from bying every watercolor in the world, so seeing the reviews is incredible helpful in making choices (and already was helpful a couple of months ago... no regrets). So: thank you, thank you, thank you.
    Further more: I wish and hope you and your family are safe and healthy. These are no easy and extremely challenging times. I wish you all the best.

    I recently got my first Bloodstone and I can’t stop using it. I really like it and it checks all my boxes which are: granulation, transparency, lightfastness, and less staining. It mixes very well with other colors without getting murky. I can’t wait to use some salt on it now that I saw this demo. Thank you!

    i love this series!! i'd love to see more! so bloodstone is def my top three favourite colours on my palette actually.. the granulation and red undertone is beautiful. i love using it and seeing it play around in the water. i also have hematite from the 6 primatek set and i find hematite to be stark and cool in comparison. my tube has smaller daintier granulation compared to my bloodstone. i find bloodstone unexplainably elegant mixed with everything

    Just saw a vid of a guy use a magnet to separate some of the iron out and got a more red pigment out of it. Pretty cool

    The "fluff" doesnt bother me, in fact, it lures me into the colors, but i'm also into crystals, tarot, & spirituality, so for me these primatek color made from real gemstones are just so magical. To create a painting that not only is a beautiful color, but contains a particular crystal and those properties can apply to my artwork, I love the idea of it. In my eyes, it takes it from being not only just a painting, but a spiritual tool, as well. I've already ordered amazonite and amethyst (after seeing how they look/perform on your channel) and I cannot wait to get my hands on them and start creating 😍

    I love the “fluff”. I think it’s a beautiful way of expressing how a person feels about their paint. I respect him for taking the time to share his insight whether or those who purchase it believe it. 💫

    I definitely prefer the coverage and application of the bloodstone. But I don't use a lot of black. Thank you SO much for reviewing these paints so w don't have to. The information you provide is invaluable. ❤

    I think I prefer hematite, or even better a warm scarlet hematite. Thanks again for an awesome review! 😊

    Just been using this paint. It's absolutely gorgeous the way it powders and clouds in a wash. Definitely use all these types of paint fresh for every wash - the undertone will disappear otherwise, as I've just discovered with hematite violet.

    I got Bloodstone on a whim because I ran cross it on sale, and it’s largely replaced lunar black for me. I love mixing with the lunar colors to add granulation, but they do separate out from other colors pretty fast so if you’re usuing more than a tiny amount of the mixture, you have to re-mix the color every time you dip your brush. Bloodstone has less separation issues (it still does but not nearly as fast in my experience) and the warmer undertone mixes really well with warm greens and yellows.

    References from over the internet disagree with Daniel Smith. Haematite, an oxide of iron, is not known as bloodstone. Bloodstone, also known as Heliotrope and comes in the form of Chalcedony (transparent) or Jasper (opaque) with red inclusions as we have in the paint.
    Classic bloodstone is opaque green Jasper with red inclusions of Haematite. That last point is, I think, where Daniel Smith got confused. There's much more Jasper than Haematite inclusions.
    The Jasper is a firm if Quartz which is Silica (Silicon Dioxide).

    • @everartokelli
      @everartokelli 4 роки тому +2

      "The classic bloodstone is opaque green jasper with red inclusions of hematite." To me that seems the same as what DS says: "Sacred to Christians, who believe the dark red drops in this green jasper represent the blood of Christ." DS says that it's jasper. Gemselect.com says about Hematite Gemstone: "The 'drops of blood' visible in this quartz bloodstone are owed to traces of iron oxide, typically hematite." I also found many references on the internet to "Hematite Bloodstone", and Haematite mean blood-like in Greek.

    Another wonderful color video, thank you. I use the Bloodstone for granulation mostly. Respecting that there are differing, all good, opinions, I would just like to say that I am one of many who value and are interested in the spiritual qualities of minerals (crystals). So I don't mind Daniel Smith adding this perspective, tho it would be better to leave off any specific religions. In fact, I sometimes choose the pigments to strengthen an intention or message in a painting. For instance, a painting of a cat for the one year anniversary of crossing the rainbow bridge. Including Amethyst, Jadeite, Turquoise and a little Rhodonite was comforting and meaningful to the client.

      Bloodstone has a purplish undertone. My phone camera filters often pick it up as a deep royal purple. It turns pure black with a little green added.

      Rebecca Page thanks that’s really helpful .. Do you find it better than neutral tint?

    • @rebeccapage4411
      @rebeccapage4411 4 роки тому +4

      I don't care for DS neutral tint, but I use Sennelier's extensively in my 18 color landscape palette. I jokingly call neutral tint my "smooth darkerizer" and bloodstone my "chunky darkerizer". In my 12 color sketching kit I only have bloodstone because my other colors are mostly transparent and non- granulating and I need some texture. My Insta is @rpagenh and only includes sketchbook/play pieces if you want to see Bloodstone in action.

    I really like the bloodstone and much better than the hematite. Hematite looks flatter and more "black" whereas the bloodstone has more hue, particularly that red - my favorite color. I actually use the bloodstone in my work because of some of the fluff lol but I am a fluff person which is why I'm interested in the primatek range anyway., however I would like to know the chemical/pigment properties in addition to the fluffy stuff and I'm disappointed they're left out a lot of the time.

    a friend of mine used to grind down coal to a pigment and paint with it and it look a bit like that....... black is not a colour i us a great deal but for shading am sure it would work ok. tfs

    Hmmmm, I was about to order some lunar black, but this looks good too! I love moonglow, but want something closer to black but still granulating. I also put some moonglow into a half pan and let it dry, but it,s lost its “pop” - won’t make that mistake again!

    I can't with the fluff, but I'm not gonna lie: This one draws me. I don't know what it is with me and greyish colours. I'm the same with hematite, but ofc it's the same stone, he he.
    I think I'm a bloodstone girl between these two.

    By this point, DS has given us enough fluff that we never need to buy pillows ever again 🙄🙄🙄
    It's absolutely useless and I wish they would step away from that nonsense.
    Thank you for comparing hematite and bloodstone, it's really informative to see them side by side :D

    Thank you for your informative videos. I have been painter for many years, but took up watercolor recently. I am a hugh fan of Daniel Smith watercolor paints. I recently came across DaVinci watercolor paints. The Wondering Watercolorist Palette looks very interesting in choice of colors in the same palette. Can you advise on this set or brand.

    Goodness, the marketing department at Daniel Smith has been on fire recently with these airy-fairy, flowery descriptions. They make nice paint but I find it hard not to roll my eyes at a lot of their creative descriptions, especially when they compare the colour of their paint to the blood of Jesus Christ! I mean, that's aiming high right there.
    I've never tried the Primatek series, but am very much enjoying your series. :) I'm not sure I am particularly attracted to any of the Primatek colours either actually. The difference between the Bloodstone and the Haematite is so negligible. I mean, it is almost indistinguishable. They're more similar than Ultramarine Blue from two different manufacturers, never mind Ultramarine and Cobalt, for example, from two manufacturers.

    I'm Christian and never heard of Bloodstone being compared to the blood of Christ? I must be reading the wrong books... xD There is so much fluff D.S. puts on their colors. Can't they just get to the point? But apparently not. I think it's an ok color, but not one I think is required in my palette.
