    This color is also available in the DS stick watercolors which is a lot more affordable than the tube, for those who are interested but don't want to pay the series 4 price 😁 The stick is the equivalent of 12 ml of tube paint.

      Hi Rosie, can you explain the difference between the Daniel Smith stick and normal tube paint?

    • @Rosie4540
      @Rosie4540 5 років тому +17

      @@sherrikent6628 The stick paint is like a dehydrated version of the tube paint. I cut a piece off and stick it into my pallette with some water. It rewets just as well as the dried tube paint and behaves just the same. They advertise that you can draw with it too but I haven't tried that. At mylocal store, it is about $8.50 per stick and the price does not change based on the series. It is a good deal!

    Serpentine is my favorite green, together with green apatite. I use it mostly for foliage and leaves or in landscapes for trees and grass. I find it is such a natural green color. I was looking for green paint that had no phtalo's in it, since I feel all mixes with phtalo's make the greens very unnatural. Mixes with ultramarine I find too muted. This is a lovely bright and warm green when diluted and the granulation adds some tecture and you can also shadow with the mass tones. And it is convenient not to have to mix the green!

    As a red-green colorblind artist, I sometimes have trouble seeing certain pigments. I'd recently added serpentine genuine to my palette, thinking it to be a muted green only to have various people tell me that no, passages of it were quite bright and vivid -- and I'd no idea why! Thank you SO MUCH for making this video, and for your very detailed verbal descriptions for those of us who can't make out the differences. You've gained a new subscriber, for sure. :)

    I've tried a few Primateks (Piemontite, Rhodonite, Jadeite, Amethyst, Mayan Blue, and Hematite). They are all gorgeous, but boy, are most of them temperamental. I think what you say about serpentine applies to most of these: you need to practice with them, as they are very unpredictable. That said, Amethyst is my absolute favorite. It's probably my favorite DS color (from the limited palette I own). It's both versatile and unique, it blends so cleanly with so many other colors, and I'm not gonna lie, I'm a sucker for the little sparkles it leaves behind hahaha. From the Primateks I own, I think Jadeite is my second favorite, and it also blends very well. I love the granulation in all of these, but in some like Hematite it can be hard to control if you're not using the right paper and are not well acquainted with the paint. I'm still learning!

    I love Serpentine for florals and though it is already a natural looking hue, as you demonstrated, it can easily be tweeked by mixing. I dont find the granulation a problem on hot pressed paper. Thank you for your excellent videos. Your thorough colour examinations and comparisons to similar watercolours are really helpful. As a result of your video on Green Apitite Genuine, I inow have it on order from Jacksons. Thank you again and look forward to more episodes.

    Awesome color! Thank you for the demo as I don't have this color yet. I love the granulation. It reminds me of using Cascade Green, sometimes I use it in backgrounds because I never know if it's going to be bluer or greener... It lends an atmosphere of surprise! Looking at the screen the color looks like it's also close to Windsor & Newton olive green as well.

    I bought Serpentine Genuine based on this review for the reddish brown flecks of granulation that I saw in the gauzing and also what Daniel Smith said about "burnt scarlet" coming through in the granulation. However, my paint does not have those effects at all. I painted thin, thick and gauged, but saw very little granuation and no reddish brown flecks. I took it in the sun to look as well and saw only green. The green color is nice, simular to a light sap green, but I also saw no neon green color coming out and absolutely no scarlet bits within the paint. For this, I am disappointed in this color that did not do what it claimed, while being so expensive. Maybe I received a sub standard tube of paint. I probably will not buy it again.

      hi - this paint is extremely tricky and temperamental but I'm sure with more experimentation you will start to see the red specks. Try adding clear water droplets into a serpentine green wash -->more water surprises = more reddish hue comes out. Also try other papers - I find it really comes out on rough paper and much more minimally on hot press.

    I think Daniel Smith might have been on crack when they said that this mineral is stichtite. Stichtite is not a type of serpentine although it occurs as a result of a reaction product of serpentinite with chromium and is a pink to vibrant purple stone and not green. The two stones do occur together in Australia though so I think what they've done is given away their source mine by accident.

    When you painted out the wet color, I really liked the mossy natural color. However, I didn't expect to see the reddish brown color or the bright green color when it dried, but there it was. I especially don't like the brightness of that part of the green. Because of this, I am not the biggest fan of this color on it's own, but I do quite like the way it mixes with the other colors. Thank you for sharing your paint colors and your thoughts with us!

    It’s not my color honestly xD but you make me want to use it xD
    I got a halfpan from a friend not so long ago, and I was really excited to try it out, but I was kinda disappointed, it felt somewhat weaker then my usual green apatite genuine, like on the comparison sheet you can see that green apatite can be so much darker... yeah that one is more muted and cold-toned, but I still like it much more...
    Maybe it’s that red granulation that is bugging me, but in general I rather use green apatite or mix ago green and perylene green for my olives...
