  • This is the second movement (Largo) of 'Toccata' (1942) by Carlos Chávez. The performance shown here was given on the 21st of November in the Davis Concert Hall of the University of Alaska, Fairbanks.
All movements are meant to be performed 'attaca', but for the sake of youtube compression, we have them divided into video parts.
The performers are members of Ensemble 64.8 and from left to right are:
    Chris Reichmeier
    Eric Retterer
    Shawn Savageau
    Morris Palter
    Caitlyn Hatcher
    and Brandon Thomas.
Following program notes are by Trevor Saint:
"Known for his orchestral symphonies and Aztec ballets, 'Toccata' is Carlos Chávez's only approach to a purely percussion work. Unlike the percussion music of his contemporaries, Chávez exploits only traditionally orthodox instruments in this percussion sextet. As an influential Mexican composer, Chávez consistently looked to the percussion section to augment the melodic, rhythmic, and timbral qualities in his orchestral works. In 'Toccata', he exemplifies motives through rhythm, rather than melody. It is in 'Toccata' that the percussionists move from behind the orchestra to the front of the stage."
