That makes sense: Fiesta is 4 minutes 26 seconds Heart of the City is 3 minutes 44 seconds. AND Jay stops rappin at the 2:55 mark. It checks out.
Jay's process is just as impressive as his career. MATH delivering with these interviews!! No brakes keep going!!
Hands down he got the best show out.

I mean…. I mastered it as well, to da point that writing it down NOW feels weird… and I’m DUMB nice!
It’s his show you are watching. Remember that.
He supposed to big himself Up
nah recording a verse in one take is definitely impressive - the breath control required while trying to stay on beat, switch flows, maintain a cadence all without fumbling a single word is certainly a skill - i can barely text a voice note in one take never mind 16 bars 😂
Facts😁
Facts. And it's crazy because some of these newer rappers be talking about one take and their rhymes be pure ASS. It's levels to shit fr 😂
It’s very easy with practicing. No one has the footage now I don’t think…but I saw some of Jay takes for Can I Get A and he was showing Ja rule how to rap. Like I think Jay helped ja do his verse if I’m not mistaken. He looked lost bro like he didn’t know how to rap and Jay was like bro come on this is too easy I will help u
It's impressive but in the grand scheme does not matter or auto make instant classic. It's like being able to hit half court shots is amazing but it's still only 3 point during the game.
@@djharris8491 you're stating the obvious. Of course one take doesn't make it good. People are already impressed before ever knowing the that it was done in one take. That's when it becomes unbelievable 😂
I just want to take this time to say thank you to Guru for shouting out Nick Grant and JID because those two young brothers are fire and they can go fr so appreciate that

Jid damn near this generations Lil Wayne little do niggas wanna admit it💯
The "one take thing" and "not writing it down" thing is impressive the same way we are impressed by great movie scenes that were ad libed and unscripted. It gives it a mystique of being from the ether.
It doesn't take away from the body of work if it's not done in that format, but it adds to it if it is done in that format. This doesn't mean that it should be the standard. These are special moments and artists. Don't try to do this at home kids.
Precisely
Perfectly said, can't force those moments.
"... This doesn't mean that it should be the standard..."
It is impressive that hov did it in 1 take.
It says something about his skill.
That's called TALENT!!!
Absolutely. Even Talent has to couple Skill and Work. It's like building a muscle.
It’s more like Gifted!!

Somebody else said this in a comment but interviewing producers is one of the best things for Hip Hop because they are walking goldmines when it comes to having stories of rappers in their memory.
Thats crazy. That's the description of a GIFT!!! Both for Jay AND for Just Blaze...
They’re not dropping these fast enough for me and at this point I strongly feel Guru either needs his own podcast about hip hop or needs to be added to one of these shows.
As a former rapper "lyrical exercise", (Jay-z's musical approach) is hard but I've done it. Composing a hot 16 with no pen is a true gift.
The number of takes a rapper need to nail a verse is actually relevant. It just shows mastery and speaks volumes to their ability to offer a compelling live performance.
Yooo Guru gotta be my favorite interview from y’all so far!! Imagine if y’all get Jay Z one day. But Guru is a Legend! I always thought One Take Hov was a myth but after seeing so many people say this he gotta be one of the greatest
He's the Greatest MC
❕❕❕❕
But Mecca's argument and his point about being impressive needs its recognition. It doesn't take away, but it's interesting and cool if he can.
@@Brokenenglishfilmsplus right . I didn’t understand why they rode him(pause) so hard off that comment
@@Brokenenglishfilmsplus I think it’s always been impressive. Considering all of the punch lines and double/triple entendres it’s something to brag sbout
The legendary Guru co-signing JID's album is all I needed to hear, I was already telling dudes it was fire but now you can't tell me nothing bout my boy
Guru needs to be a regular....I can listen to his stories all day!!! Does he have a Podcast?
the core of the question is does doing it in one take affect the quality of the record. When you’ve came up writing your able to map out things In Your mind and have foresight about how to make a verse or song cohesive all the way through(mental practice, building that creative muscle). From that your grow to a point you do t necessarily need to write cause you can envision and edit on the fly in your head. What the guys were talking about with the younger generation and I’ve seen it as an audio engineer. Is they go find a random beat, don’t have any song structure in mind or even know how to count bars and sit in the Stu piecing lines together to the point every verse or song they do sounds the same. They were just trying not to step on coat tails or not make you get guest not want to come by not saying names
Also it adds to and gives major credibility to you as a word smith and MC. If you didn't know it was one take or wasn't written down before it was recorded it's fine because that is the usual way humans do it. But once you find out the process of someone who has no paper no pen walk in and walk out one time it speaks to the level of genius only a few rappers have ascended to God level rappers like Biggie etc. once people find that out it adds MASSIVE credibility especially when your material comes out way better than someone who sat in front of a notepad for days at a time stuck with writers block. It is definitely way more impressive.
bro yes! I've seen too many of these young dudes come in the studio, and wanna make up the rhyme there on the spot, and punch in after EACH LINE! and wanna add a "chorus" where it shouldn't even go, and as a music lover it's frustrating lol.

The difference is that Jay formulated the rhymes in his head had the whole thing ready and then went into the booth to lay in one take. He didn't freestyle the joint. Still having that level of memory is crazy .
That’s why his flow is so incredible to me. Sometimes I’m like “how does he ride the beat like this”? 😂

The goat word gets thrown around a lot.. this is the true definition of a goat. 💯💪
I stumbled on this and this is a really reaaaaally good pod.
I agree, it doesn't matter if you punch in or do it all in one take, it just shows your levels. JAY evolved from writing on paper to thinking, creating and sequencing all in his mind without writing. He graduated on a higher level. I tried doing that but my mind is not that potent man I forget and be like what I said on this part. I have to use my phone to record to listen and remember
That line about "developing the Fundamental's like Tim Duncan before you try to be Kobe, they both have 5 rings" is some deep philosophical REAL shit!! When word got out about Jay NOT writing & then they showed it in the Fade to Black movie, I remember almost every MC/Rapper even known star's started saying they'd stopped writing! Everyone CAN'T do it & those that try barely create Dope music!!!🤦🏽♂🤷🏽♂🤴🏽✌
word! If you did this song in one take, if you wrote this hit song in 10mins, how about taking 2 hours and write a classic album??
@12:00 The reason a recorded one take rap is impressive, is because a lot of artist may miss pronounce a word, lost some breath control, forgot a line,
punched in the second half of a verse because it didn’t sound as good as the first ,cause the energy of it fell off etc. these things aren’t at the for front of
our minds, but when brought to our attention, knowing what it takes to write, come up with lyrics, remember it then spit it flawlessly? You dayum right.
ITS F**king IMPRESSIVE! And deserves respect. Nothing further your honor.
👏..well said...
Truth!
Thanks Math for bringing our favorites on because some never got to hear their story. If they said it back then, more people would be alert and willing to get the music! Salute

Are you a JeHOVa's witness? 👀
What’s impressive is when you’re in the studio and you see it for yourself what a one take do especially if the words are pressed tight together and you know it’s hard to say clearly and you run the whole 16 bars correctly in one take

It matters bc of a thing called intellectual curiosity. If more ppl had a grasp of this concept the world would be far better off than we are now.
Gotta agree with Mecca on this one. It's all an art. If someone paints a portrait upside down we're gonna be impressed with the process even if painting comes out the same.

I can’t wait to see this in its entirety.
Bro they’re completely missing what Mecc is saying. It doesn’t matter how long it took or how many takes. He’s clearly only saying well shit if you did it this fast then that makes it all the more impressive. That’s all!
Personally I never understood why a fan would care how many takes a sound is done in. All that truly matters to me is the final project.🤷🏾♂️
Exactly. The takes don’t matter. Is it impressive? Yes…. But why should a fan give af how many takes it took? The final product is all that matters. You think I give af how many takes it took for Pac to do Keep your head up? Or Nas to do One Love or Memory Lane? Or Biggie to do Sky’s the limit? Doing it in one take is very impressive but if it takes multiple takes for you to give me those songs?? Take as many takes as you need. Punches and all. Those records are perfect
i love these guys!!
You gentlemen have this format mastered. The conversations, debates and questions make it feel like the greatest barbershop 💈 ever.
Does anyone get their haircut in there?
Math Hoffa really found his lane doing podcasting. All these podcasts have been 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥💯
Word i actually like his podcast the most.
It’s because what Jay does, very few people can do it. Also everyone that is part of the culture knows the difficulty of doing that. It’s impressive. It’s like when you see a nine year old that can play the piano classically.
And people don't get the processes it took for jay to get to that point he said when he was running the streets he use to have to remember his raps until he got home to right it down then it got to a point where he would remember a whole song then started to remember like 4 or 5 songs in his head so it became a skill it didn't happen overnight
I waited until I got off work just so I could watch this wit no interuptions and it's safe 2 say I wasn't disappointed. Dope! Shoutout to Math and his crew! 💪🏿💯
11:20 I see his point. It doesn't take away from someone who needs multiple takes. That's fine. But it's still impressive when someone doesn't need to. As an aside, Kerouac supposedly wrote On The Road in one sitting (out of his mind on uppers) at a typewriter.
Its impressive... it matters... theres levels... thats all... no one is saying its wack cause you did revision... but its very impressive when one can do it in one take... its not hard to understand, shouldn't be a debate... great show as usual
Math you been on a roll big dawg , Love the content.
These interviews are golden 🔥🔥🔥🔥
I care about spitting a verse in one take because it sounds better, period. It’s a performance. We revere rappers for breath control. When a punch-in isn’t executed well-and often even when it is-you can tell. It disrupts the rhythm. One reason why contemporary rappers rap live over their own vocals is because they couldn’t possibly rap the song live in one take-they never have!
Math out this world already with this extraterrestrial podcast #MYEXPERTOPINION
MATH! KEEP IT GOING BRO!
“Fiesta” is the video. It is in DECODED book.
As a an artist it really doesnt matter what method you use the consumer only gets the finished product...I have done both one takes and punch ins

Got 3 great interviews running concurrently like a jail sentence lol... keep it up Math!
Can't wait for this to drop.
It doesn't matter if they did the verse in one take if the verse is wack!! 💯💯💯
of course doing it in "one take" doesn't matter. I don't expect anybody to do that, but I am impressed when someone does and it comes out being a fire song or verse. That just shows that the artist was feeling it and in the zone on that track.
I love it when you guys can just politic and converse about this rap game with the love for it is so awesome

It was a bit upsetting hearing them try to knock his point about being impressed on something being done in one take he never knocked people who don't do it in one take its just incredible if it is imagine you see somebody collect every fruit in pacman in one try compared to someone pausing their game or trying multiple times its cool no matter how long it takes but imagine in one take that's all he was saying

Agreed
I agree cuz truth be told if you ever seen someone do that in the booth in person it’s pretty crazy
Nahhhhhhhh hold up...for a minute, the claim was outlandish and sounded crazy..but what everybody on the panel forgetting is that videos were at the 4 min-5 min time frame back then and looking up Heart of the City, the entire song is 3 mins and some change...so for a minute, Guru had me doubting him too...but thats just off pure instinct and we've been in this short song era for a while now so to even remember Fiesta was 4 mins and some change, u gotta do ya googles. Guru got this one tho!

I get what mecca was saying . He basically saying It's like the dunk contest. A one attempt successful dunk (one take) is more impressive than 10 attempts dunk (punch in)
The dunk with 10 attempts may still get a 10 , but the the dunk with 1 attempt that gets a 10 makes you feel more impressed
A person winning a million dollars is amazing! But if someone made a million dollars from the ground up now that’s impressive!
One isn’t better than the other but one is more impressive and interesting.
These stories never get old....
Great convo Justin Edwards I'm proud of you bro you made something outta nothing bro took this platform to a crazy level salute..
Glad they called Guru out. I definitely don’t believe dude laid verses for a whole track while a video was still playing once completed. FOH Also- the one take process is highly overrated. It’s impressive: but in the long run- it doesn’t have a direct impact on how great a song is. It’s one of those afterthought types of medals on your chest (provided the finished product is dope).
Some of jayz songs he took from other people.
@@justinperry2352 If Jay took the songs it was the hook and beat but nobody wrote verses for him.
