  • (1 Jun 1970) RR7022 NORTHERN IRELAND: BELFAST'S SOCIAL PROBLEMS
How much of Northern Ireland's troubles today are caused by religious bigotry and hatred? And how
much by the squalor and deprivation in which so many of Ulster's citizens live - Catholic and Protestant
alike? Belfast has half a million inhabitants, many of whom live in slums with no inside lavatory, no bath, no hot water or electricity. Some houses are rotten with damp, others were unfit for human habitation even
before the First World War. Wages are much lower than in the rest of the UK and unemployment is nearly
three times higher. Belfast's Labour Exchange is the largest in Britain. This report looks at the social
problems of Belfast as they affected four families.

I lived in North Belfast for 2 years between 2008-2010. It really is that dreary. I recall the constant rain.

That poor wee old man pawing his radio and buying it back again when he gets his tiny pension and having to pay the interest every time was so sad. God bless him. Then the woman with ten kids living in squalor. That is real poverty. We are so lucky nowadays.

Those children would be grandparents now listening to there grandchildren piss and moan about not having any WI-FI and stuff.

So sad. And yet the people are so resilient. Really brings a tear to my eye.

judging by the narration it would seem like 1970, hard times without the troubles let alone what was to come in the next 10 years

@@edwardogrady6587 I'm now thinking of 1970. I would have been 19 years old I worked for vanda beauty counceler as a warehouse man . A fantastic job in a showpiece company in skelmersdale . I think my salary was maybe 20 pounds a week before tax with all the overtime you want . I could easily pay my rent .went out boozing and womanising 4 times a week and drove a big car . God I miss those times . It all changed in late 70s with mass unemployment .3 day working week bread strikes sugar strikes petrol strikes . Even now I miss the 60s and early 70s
