Thank you very much Rick.....I.m pleased that the plants are doing quite well......I try to keep the videos going but....as you know.......it's getting a little difficult finding new things to talk about......thanks for your kind words and take care. Ed,
Good morning...Eds Orchids, Those Órchids of yóurs are gorgeous and healthy, Congratulations,..Eds Orchids. All the best wishes to you and greetings from the North Borneo,
Thank you, Ed, for the tour of your greenhouse. Your plants are healthy and beautiful. Seems like they agree with the lava rocks . I wish you a good week. Catherine
My pleasure to show you what I have in the greenhouse Catherine. The negative part of showing you nearly everything is that it makes it difficult to find something a little bit different onmy next videos. Not quite sure of the lava rock and the Draculas.......I've taken a few out of the lava and replaced with sphagnum to compare their growth rates. Thanks again Catherine ...hope all is well with you and take care, Ed.
Hi Anna....the plants are growing well which is what we all want to achieve in the long run. The damage to my phals is soething I thought would neve happen and it will take a year or two to get them back to normal. Pleased you liked the tour round the greenhouse.... thanks again and take care, Ed.
Thanks Ed for a tour round your greenhouse the orchids ar looking well and happy in lava rock thouse little slugs are enough to drive you round the bend Ed what a shame your phalaenopsis were looking fantastic but you do have flowering spikes coming so we can look forward to blooms😊 have a good evening thanks for the video regards nick.
Good morning Nick.....the slugs are a real bind....another reason for using lava rock is that slugs will not glide over the stuff. Thanks Nick and keep safe, Ed.
My pleasure to show you CK and thanks for taking a look and for your comment. I'm not totally convinced that all orchids love the lava rock but I'll continue using it on all plants until I see some negative results on certain species.....take care, Ed.
Good morning Melissa and thank you for your comment......so nice of you......maybe you should try a couple of Massies....the books say they are almost all cool growers but whats cool where they come from would be quite warm in the North of the UK.......they'll grow quite well from virtually anything upto 82f providing they can get a difference in temperature of about 10 degrees at nightime. Thanks again Melissa and take care, Ed.
Good morning Colin ....good to hear from you. The Draculas are being very slow to react to the lava rock so I have trnsfered a few of them back to sphagnum for obvious reasons. so we'll see which ones do the best.....take care Colin, Ed.
Thanks Ed, your plants are looking good. The masedavillas are a credit to you. Such lovely cool growing plants. Unsuitable for my area and conditions. Well done.
A very good morning to you Rea. The masdevallias are really pleasing me.......thank you. I find that they will stand much warmer conditions than you would think but not for very long periods.....which we don't get!!! Thanks again rea for all your comments.....very much appreciated......take care, Ed.
Good morning and thank you for your comment. The rock journey is working well on most of the plants but I'm not so convinced that the Phals and Draculas will readily adapt to the stuff.....thanks again and take care, Ed.
Thank you Nancy for your comment. At this time of the year they are the grimm reaper......the lava rock however has cut down their attendance. Hope all is well with you and yours Nancy take care and keep well, Ed.
Such healthy plants, seems the lava rock is working quite well. I’m keen on mounting orchids, this makes me think about trying to mount on lava rock. Especially lithophytes
Good morning Stwinky. It will be interesting to see how orchids would respond to being mounted on lava.....best of luck when you do try this......thank you for your comment and thoughts....take care, Ed.
The Phals have really suffered and will take some time to become showable again......but there are other matters which are far more worth worrying about in this world of ours......take care Denise ....thank you and take care, Ed.
Hi Lori. I'm very pleased with the growth on the Dendrobium. I do like the lava rock a lot but I'm not sure that the stuff will be readily adaptedby certain species roots. The ones which aren't showing much root growths are the Draculas so I have used sphagnum on a few of them just for comparison. I am probably watering 2/3 times more than usual depending on the weather. Thanks and take care, Ed.
I like to soak the plants for 10 mins or so especially if I'm feeding which I do every week.....the strength of the feed depends on the species I am feeding. I do like to flush shortly after feeding because I think the plants will take up all the nutrients they need within an hour
Ed, oh my those slugs are just awful & where in the world do they come from I wonder. I agree the lava rock should discourage them from hiding in the phals. All ur other plants look very happy in lava rocks. I have to ask you a few questions: how often are you watering the plants in lava rock? & do you soak them or just run water through them? Also do you use Cal Mag every time you water? I ask bc I remember you saying you can’t over water the lava rock plants. I have been watering mine every 3 or 4 days. So far so good. Also is the light in ur greenhouse all natural or do you have some lamps on them? I think you tend ur plants frequently as I try to do too. Thank you for taking time to show us how ur collection is doing. I think all 10 of ur fingers are “green” not just the thumbs! Regards, from Delaware.
Good evening Georgia and thank you for your comment. I'm watering the plants in lava rock 3 or 4 times per week depending on the warmth of the weather. I like to soak them for ten minutes or so especially when I feed them......I just give them a flushing the same day if possible.....the plants will take up the nutrients they need probably in the first hour of feeding.so a quick flushing will rid the pot of unessential feed and I feed every week followed by 3 or 4 flushings. I feed the masdevallias less than the Cattleyas and other plants which require more feed. I have no lights in the greenhouse and no heat so I bring all my plants indoors during the cold months My pleasure to show you so thanks again for your comment......take care, Ed..
......beautiful update Ed......lots of growth and a bunch of spikes coming......keep up the great work.
Thank you very much Rick.....I.m pleased that the plants are doing quite well......I try to keep the videos going but....as you know.......it's getting a little difficult finding new things to talk about......thanks for your kind words and take care.

Nice update. Lots of nice growth. They're looking good. I hope the slugs stay away from your Phals. Thanks for giving us a look around. 😊

Looks very good. I watched your lava rock journey. I think i will give it a try. I have some poor ones.
Thank you

Darn those snails. I hate snails. All the rest of your orchids look beautiful.
Thank you Nancy for your comment. At this time of the year they are the grimm reaper......the lava rock however has cut down their attendance. Hope all is well with you and yours Nancy take care and keep well,

Ed oh no the phals…. I am so sorry about what has happened to your plants. Those slugs do raise havoc on orchids big time.
The Phals have really suffered and will take some time to become showable again......but there are other matters which are far more worth worrying about in this world of ours......take care Denise ....thank you and take care,

Nice save on the Dendrobium! So, you’re sold on the lava rock by the looks of things. 😊❤. How much of a change to your watering routine has it been?
Do you soak your orchids or just run water through them? Watch all your videos .
