  • The first official races held in the Marne district of the Champagne region of France took place in 1912 using motorcycles around a sprawling 125 kilometer course between Reims and Sarcy. The Grand Prix de la Marne featured cars for the first time in 1925, using a much smaller 10 km circuit east of Reims, known as the Beine-Nauroy circuit. Just a year later the race moved west of Reims, this time connecting Thillois, Gueux, and Garenne. At 7.8 kilometers the race was far more compact and easier to spectate, prompting organizers to build grandstands and pit facilities. While bikes continued to use the circuit, a 12 hour endurance event was also scheduled each year.
By 1932 the circuit had become so successful that the French Automobile Club chose to run the French Grand Prix there. In preparation for the race, the corners at Gueux, Garenne, and Thillois were widened. The race was won by Tazio Nuvolari in a trifecta of Alfa Romeo P3's, ahead of Baconin Borzacchini and Rudolf Caracciola.
The circuit would remain unchanged until 1938, when the D27 highway between Thillois and Gueux was widened, felling every roadside tree in the process. Perhaps those trees were used to build the extra grandstands and extra pit buildings, which were finished in time for the French Grand Prix. By now the German Auto Union and Mercedes teams had become dominant, and the Reims-Gueux circuit played directly into their horsepower advantage.
After the war speeds continued to increase, forcing the race organisers to bypass the town of Gueux entirely, leading to the more famous version of the circuit run entirely in the countryside, which F1 would use for another 15 years.

Beautiful work. I wish it made for good racing, but looks to be 90% full throttle

Sounds like a recipe for pack racing, which plenty today consider quite entertaining tbf.

A symptom of pre war racing. There were very few racetracks in existence before World War 2, so almost all racing was done on public roads like this. It was also more a battle of survival back then, a test of endurance for both car and driver.

Is the track set pre WW1? I saw the German Empire flag, which means it can't be later than 1918/1919

@@fishman501 33-35 the Nazis used the imperial flag, later on in 35 they adopted the swastika flag.
So with this being 32 Reims it should technically be the Weimar republic flag which is the same as current day germany

@@Aesh-om2sz I had no idea about them using the imperial flag, especially since I think the moustache man hated the Kaiser for losing WW1
