    PLEASE NOTE; we started on the unit and it is absolutely WONDERFUL! The kids are enjoying it, the younger children are asking to join the older kids, and it's helped one of my two high school children that was lacking direction narrow down a career choice already. I've found it beautifully done, and love that it's open and go-easy to teach, and it's fostering conversations and together time.

    I started making and selling (locally and shipping) my own lard and tallow soaps a few months ago, and it's going great. It's been a wonderful source of extra income. I think that people crave clean and natural things. I love it! :)

    I LOVE your channel. It makes me long for the days I homeschooled my two kids. They’re in their 40’s now but I LOVED the whole process and having my kids home and building that relationship with them which is strong yet today. God bless you!

      How old are your kids? I have five aged 16-7. I’m wondering if it works for that spread. My oldest is very intelligent and tends to prefer studying on his own. I can never find things that challenge him while keeping my youngest engaged.

      If you don’t mind me asking what ages are your boys? I’m considering it for my 4 year old in the fall and also for my 9 year old daughter

    Oh, I so hear you on waiting until your kids are older before making soap. I’ve wanted to make soap since my oldest was a baby, but I haven’t for this very reason! My youngest is now 3, so maybe in a couple of years I’ll try!

    Shayla, thank you so much for being there and putting together all these wonderful videos. I discovered your work this fall and have been catching up with your story ever since.
    Your videos are so inspirational and motivating, I love love finding a new one in my feed.
    And have you been told this before - although I am not a christian per say but I do so appreciate your devotionals and thoughts about being a woman/ wife/ mother in a family! They are super helpful to hear as I am hopping along this fun journey of raising my boys and all the other ministries we women do. Very much looking forward to seeing a ton more☀️
    Lots of appreciation to you from the Pacific NW wonderland 🗻🌲🐋
    Also I want to say that I love the magazine holder as a cutting board caddy. So awesome. The flower pot as a brush holder is fantastic as well! I love discovering these little gems in your house - mine is somewhat similar, I’d say a good mix of between Noemi’s and yours😊

    I made my own candles recently and my daughter thought that was fun being a teen. Later we try soap. That definitely would be interesting to learn. I love the patterns too. Beautiful video as always. If you ever sold books, I would be buying every one. Be blessed, signed loyal watcher.❤

    When I taught, I incorporated the Common Core Standards, too. It was so rewarding, and the retention was superior. Thanks for the tip of mineral oil with the wax wraps for flexibility. When I make mine, I use a hot iron with aluminum foil over the iron, and wax paper between the fabric and aluminum foiled iron.

    When I make soap, I use the hot method with coconut oil and lye. It definitely burns if you touch it. Mine is ready to use right away. I still try to wait a few weeks. I like to make shampoo bars as well. Much less expensive than purchasing a family size bottle of shampoo and conditioner.

    Love the white chippy cabinet and i think it totally blends with the boho look. Also, cabinets like that are great in bathrooms too as well as garden sheds and screened in porches or most any large size porch. I love them and are easily painted any color.

    Lovely video. Yesterday, with my younger kids, I made suet bird seed cakes (for all the lovely birds we get along our creek). We also made tallow candles. I’ve gotten out of the habit of soap making, but you’ve reinspired me- thank you! I hope to do it soon before garden starting time begins. For people who are looking for fat, a good source for fat can be a local butcher shop. If you raise your own animals, and develop friendships with some of the local butchers, sometimes they’ll offer you extra fat and bones. We’ve been so blessed by this. When I get a new batch of fat to render, I use the older stuff for candles and salves and suet cakes for the birds. We also love tallow whipped body butter.
    I love these wintertime crafts, they’re so fulfilling and cozy.
    PS I took your recommendation on the kitchen brush a few months back and I really love mine too.
    Many blessings to your family. ❤

    March is our tough month of homeschooling. Seems to be common among our homeschooling friends, as well. Its like the long NY winters are just never going to end, no matter what that dang groundhog says. LOL. And we are all bored with school, bored with each other & I am longing to get outside & make maple syrup. Plus, I am dreaming & itching to get gardening, but that is months away in reality. I find it is ME that has a hard time staying disciplined, which has a trickle down effect. I always advise people considering homeschooling to NEVER ask a homeschool mom how she 'likes' it, in MARCH!!!! by then we are ready to sell our kids to the circus. LOL. I only have one left to graduate next year in 2025. Getting kind of tired & looking forward to a break.

    • @mountainhomesteadfamily
      @mountainhomesteadfamily  4 місяці тому

      Haha, I laughed at the part about not asking a homeschool mom how she likes it in March! I've talked to teachers who feel the same way! It is hard staying disciplined around the spring, but if feels so good to finish well I've found. I'm looking forward to getting out and starting gardens but I know how busy that time of year will be, so I'm teaching myself to enjoy this last bit of winter, all cozied up with my teas and coffees. I love reading your comments, Patty!

    Wow so fun. I haven't used coco butter before in creams, lotions, or salves. I will look into that. I want to make so bad but I am so very intimidated by the lye and all the steps. My youngest is now four and a half so I think I could do that maybe this summer. I will try it at some point. Now sewing on the other hand, I took a sew class and a few quilting class in the last three years and have loved it so much. I have enjoyed showing my kids that and its fun to see what the come up with. Its always so fun watching what you have to share. Thank you so much for a wonderful variety of things, its always done in such a delightful way. These kinds of home things keep my homeschooling going. Its when I feel creative and excited that I find I don't loose the motivation to keep things fresh with school even in the winter months. I also encourage my kids to do the same which is helpful for them to try new things too.

    I'm right there with you. I still have tiny kiddos, so I'd be paranoid to make soap. Can I get on the friends list? Those gifts are going to be well received. ❤ We removed the Christmas decoration day after Christmas this year because of my daughter's medical issues that sprung up in December. We were usually the people who kept everything up until Candlemas (Feb 2nd) or at least through Epiphany. As for the country hutch, you moved to the kitchen; maybe if you paint it black or dark charcoal, it may be more boho looking? Love your style. My style is eclectic. I have a basket wall in my bedroom, but I love the way yours turned out. The warm tones with the black wall look awesome. My room is north facing, so I can't do the dark wall, but yours is lovely. Quilting is on my goal list. We crochet and knit and sew, but quilting is a bit intimidating. Those beeswax wraps are awesome. Can you swap out the mineral oil for a different oil, do you think? This was a very enjoyable video, very helpful and inspiring.

    Hello!😊🖐 I hope you and your family are doing great and I hear you about the winter months... I was just thinking about how I need to take my tree down but I really want to keep something cheerful in my home because when the lights come down I tend to get down.🤷‍♀️ I know that sounds silly because the Lord is my joy. Thank you for bringing inspiration with creativity during these winter months.👍
    We've done the Gather 'Round Oceanography unit and our kids loved it, especially since we live far from the ocean and don't get to experience much of that. I'm actually currently in the Ancient History unit of Gather 'Round and trying to figure out how to teach it so that I'm not reading a ton from the teaching manual and ending up losing the younger kids attention. Hmm, lmk if you figure a tip with that. 🤔😊

    • @mountainhomesteadfamily
      @mountainhomesteadfamily  5 місяців тому

      I totally got the lights thing!! Not silly! I am going to put my lights elsewhere, I read it's a Hygee trick to leave them up and that it helps improve mood through the dark winter months.
      With the units do you start with the younger kids first? I find that helps.

      What makes you think that he is not learning? Or you're not doing enough? It seems to me that you really care about your son and his education so I bet you are doing more than enough and you're doing great and just because of your living siquestion. Does it mean you're not providing the best you can for your son.

      Oh dear. My heart goes out to you. I've been at this for 23 years and still have nine years to go. You can do it but you need to focus on your why. Think about this. Gen 1:1 "In the beginning God". That means that the entire universe is predicated on the Father/son relationship. God made Fathers and mothers so we would know what he was like. Your assignment, if you choose to continue, will be the most challenging, most rewarding time of your life. Darling you can't fail. The Lord is beside you every step. He has called you. He has given you everything you need. Trust Him and hold to the calling He has placed on you. You are changing the the country and the world. Besides you have no choice. Are you going to give your child to people who will teach him he is slime, with no plan or purpose? Teachers today can't figure out if your kid is a boy or a girl let alone love and nurture them the way you can. The stakes are too high to quit.

      Hi Katie! I think the key for you right now is to keep things simple and have fun! Not sure where you are located but I would check to see what the state requires of you (if you aren't sure where to look try HSLDA). If you felt called to homeschool, please try not to give up. I know I have struggled with this at times as well! Find YT channels and social media that supports and encourages you, not ones that make you feel like you aren't doing enough because you are probably doing more that enough! You are NOT ALONE!! You've got this!

      Awww. I want to hug you homeschool mama❤ We have all felt that way, I felt like that my first 2 years even. With time, I did test her in public school, for us, it was a bad mistake. My daughter faced bullying. So obviously we returned back home, now doing 4 years homeschooling. There’s no fault in trying public schools for anyone, but eventually you will find you’re capable of giving them a world of experiences that a classroom can’t accomplish. Blessings to you in whatever you do need to do. ❤

      There are so very many ways to educate our children...even jewish. children in biblical times had a public school, synagogue...the Roman kids had ludus litterarius...both groups probably had hime teaching for the poorer class and private tutoring fir the more upperclass. There arent mandates so there is freedom of choice.. Do you have any homeschooling groups or anyone who can mentor/help you? GOOD luck.

      Hello! Thank you for subscribing! The salves don't require preservatives, and the lotions don't if they're used quickly. If I know I'm not going to use the lotion quickly I will add benzoin. I have not made magnesium lotion, I need to research it!

      @@mountainhomesteadfamily Thank you. I really like using Magnesium lotion, making certain that we get ours every day. We put it on in the evening so that it helps with sleep. The Magnesium Oil (which really isn't an oil) kinda stings a bit. I like it, but others might not. So now I add it to some oils/butters and make a lotion. The lotion seems to be more popular with everyone. It really is good for you. You can even add it to infused calendula oil and walla! Thank you again for your videos. • @mountainhomesteadfamily
      @mountainhomesteadfamily  3 місяці тому

      Hello! It depends on the seasoning, but I find bacon, hamburger and lamb grease to work the best. If there are hot chili peppers in the seasoning the oils from those could seep into the grease, so I don't know that I'd use grease that had hot peppers cooked with it. Hope this helps!

      About a month, that's why I don't mix all the salve into lotion, just small portions that we will use within 2 to 4 weeks.

      Thank you, Erin! The wraps...it depends on how and what you use them on! For me they last about a year but they can be re beeswaxed. 😊

    Do the lotion get hard after you let it set? Because every time i use cocoa butter to make butters it set hard.

      Hello Chelly, no, mine does not. If it gets hard you can adjust your oil to cocoa butter ratio. So you can melt it back down and add more oil. You can also add some water, but if you do you'll want vitamin E or Benzoin tincture for preserving it unless you will use it within a couple weeks. If you add water you'll want to whip it as it's cooling.

    Can’t you make soap without the lye? I know there’s bees wax soap….
    Very cool & informative video. Your home is lovely.

      Thank you! And to answer your question, no, soap cannot be made without lye. There are kits where you can buy pre made soap and melt it down and remold it, but it's not possible to make soap without lye. I think one of the videos I shared in the description talks more about that.

      @@mountainhomesteadfamily this is very interesting- since I watched your video I’ve been researching lye & the true definition of soap.
      If I’m understanding -even DOVE says they don’t have lye in their products, but they do - it’s just already been formed into a different substance through a chemical reaction….
      Thanks for an interesting channel and a new subject for me to learn about.

    So are you using fat that you have previously cooked with and strained for soap??
