  • Tillandsias (air plants, tillies) make great companion plants for succulents, and because they don’t need soil, they're even easier than succulents to grow and design with. In this video and on the corresponding page of my site, I show over 30 easy, eye-catching air-plant projects, gifts and display ideas.
You’ll also meet Eric Evans of the San Diego Botanic Garden. Eric introduces these enchanting bromeliads and explains how they’re similar to (but different from) succulents. His own favorite air plant may surprise you!

That was a wonderful video. It was nice to learn about Air plants through a conservatory visit and interview. The growing ideas showed the array of decorative choices and thoughtfully ended with air plant gifting ideas. This channel is one of the best UA-cam gardening ones. Keep it up.

Been growing Tillandsias for years mostly mounted on cork bark. I love having them grow into large clumps. I’m in Massachusetts so they go outside for the summer months and come back inside for the cold late fall to early spring months. Love all the design ideas!

I have a love oak that has a split at the main trunk from a lightning strike. The tree is doing fine but I was wondering if filling in where the split is with air plants?

How well they'll do depends on where you live and how much humidity they'll get. Live oaks generally prefer arid climates.

I live in SW Florida so we are generally pretty humid. I’ve seen some growing in live oaks in parks near us. Thank you for your response.

debra - airplants do best in positions where they easily drain when watered (not in bowls or vases) - where there is a lot of airflow around the plant...otherwise they will rot in place...might be good to do a video on how to care for the plants in tandem to this video

Yes, as mentioned in the Tillandsia Care page of my site, they tend to need more water in high heat, due to desiccation. debraleebaldwin.com/tillandsia-care-and-design/

Hi I am having some trouble with my air plants. I had them in a terrarium and they started to brown at the edges. One had a red color to it and it looks the worst of the three. It almost looks like it is starting to rot.I took them out of the terrarium for now and have them with my other plants .I am not sure if I have over watered them or not. I had been misting them daily because they looked so dry and that is what I do with all of my other plants that are in the terrariums.

Sounds like rust, a kind of fungus. Isolate from your other plants and spray with a horticultural fungicide. I use this one on Amazon (affiliate link): amzn.to/3FqM9xl
