    Mr. Hardware, I enjoyed your terrific and brief how-to video! Now, I scroll through the comments for a parts list. I need to do the same thing. I'll mount that frame to a screen door to make it more rain weather and AC friendly.

    What is that framing called and where can you get it?

  • @MrHardware1
    @MrHardware1  11 років тому +2

    It is an aluminum extrusion (available in mill, bronze and white), about 1/4" id on the glass side. It is about $7.98 for a 96" length.

    It takes about 5 minutes to measure and cut the aluminum rails on a miter box w/a non-ferrous blade. And about that long to cut the Plexiglas and assemble.

  • @MrHardware1
    @MrHardware1  11 років тому +4

    Actually the frame is an I-beam shape w/ a 1/4" opening on one side and the other has beads which allow the frame to trap the metal (or plastic) corners that hold the frame together. The vinyl molding formed around the plexiglas, or glass hold the frame tight to the plexi.

    I have a "new neighbor" noise problem so I need to sound proof my bedroom windows. I can't find anybody locally to buy the soundproof window inserts from.. so I've decided to make them myself using 1/4" acoustic grade acrylic sheets, then affix EPDM rubber weather stripping around edges so they will fit snugly into the window frame. This way I won't need to use aluminum framing, and I can remove easily. I just need to make sure Acrylic measurements are correct to leave room for the rubber on edges, hope it works. Let me know what you think of this, thanks.

      Try to get molding or tracking from the distributor of the acoustic acrylic sheats. Sizing is difficult to get a proper molding for.

    • @rjeanetteelton
      @rjeanetteelton 7 років тому

      Ashton 09 Did you make your own soundproofing window inserts? How did it work out for you? Where did you get the acoustic grade plexiglass?

    • @MrHardware1
      @MrHardware1  7 років тому

      Ashton, you could test the effectiveness of a single strength plexiglas (.90, a thin 1/8") by taping an oversizes piece over the opening before spending big bucks on 1/4" plexi, it is very expensive. If works you could get frames from ezstormpanels.com

    no mention of any of your materials? was that glue in a gun?? what's the stuff you wrapped around the window first??? and what does it do?

    • @MrHardware1
      @MrHardware1  2 місяці тому

      The ‘spline’ wrapped around the plexiglass is a vinyl seal/cushion that comes in different gauges to attach the plexiglass/or glass to the aluminum frame. There are different thicknesses of both plexiglass and glass and so the proper spline is required to properly seal them to the aluminum frame.
      No glue was used.

    I wonder if you can just use poster frames that already have the metal framing & the plexi glass, then you can use some wood narrow 1/2 wide wood between them and build a window box around it and you'll have a nice cheap double pane window.

    • @MrHardware1
      @MrHardware1  6 років тому

      The problem with homemade thermopanes is the moisture trapped between the pieces of glass. As soon as there is a temperature change they will fog up inside the panes of glass. Our thermopanes are made in a factory that pulls out all the moisture and fills the void with an inert gas, then sealed for life. Blair

    is it cool to just use some caulk to seal a plexiglass window? it's going to open and also for a clubhouse.

    • @MrHardware1
      @MrHardware1  6 років тому +1

      Caulk and/or glazing can be used to seal the plexiglass. I prefer latex glazing or caulk to oil putty because the plexiglass can flex upon temperature changes. Caulk and latex glazing cures fast enough to hole the plex before it can bow.

    • @MrHardware1
      @MrHardware1  6 років тому +1

      You can also use Mortite removable rope caulk.

    What is the clarity of the plexi after the protective film is removed? Also, same question as below from some time ago, how are these fastened to Andersen Narroline 200 series doublehung (3046 and 3052 size codes). Thx!

    • @MrHardware1
      @MrHardware1  8 років тому +1

      +Christopher D'Amico
      plexi is perfectly clear. It can be scratched if cleaned w/an abrasive cleaner. Stay with soap and water.
      Attaching a 5/16 thick frame requires clips similar to the ones holding a storm in a storm door. We have other fasteners that can be fastened to the frame and pivot into the wood window, but the thickness will be over 5/16. I don't know the Anderson frame to discuss attachment, send a pic of the screen w/a scale in the foreground.

    • @MrHardware1

      yes we do, but the magnetic tape is usually not strong enough. Use velcro or very small screws and attach that way.
