This is the best explanation of this topic I've seen! Easy to understand, and it turns out that oversampling isn't the end of the world (other videos I've seen have implied it was the end). I have an 8SE, and I only have experience with the ZWO line of cameras. But, none of them that I checked out in Astrotools indicated that there was a perfect camera - all needed at least a focal reducer or binning. I was looking at 183MC or 294 MC Pro, and would be okay with both.

This concept is never spoken about in terrestrial photography circles. I wonder why. Same optical physics; similar cmos sensors.
VERY good point!!!!!! Could it be marketing???? It might dawn to some photographers their very expensive new lens is pointless as the camera can not resolve it.....

I believe the binning example you used, while relatively straightforward, applies to mono cameras. yes? If so, then 2x2 binning for a color camera doesn't use adjacent pixels; rather, it bins the 4 closest pixels with the same color filter (i.e., 4 greens, 4 reds, 4 blues) which won't be adjacent. Astronomers like The Lazy Geek do not use binning on color cameras for this reason. What say you?
Absolutely agree - I used the mono as an example, as the OSC case is much more complex. I would not say "never" use it, but for sure that oversampling much be much more severe that you should bin with OSC cameras.
OK! But my big question is; "Why do all these imagers on discussion forums say they would rather undersample than oversample?

I have a question if you use a 2600mm with bin 2 you go from 26 megapixels to 6.5megapixels isn't that a problem?
It is not a problem, it is a reality which must be considered when making this decision. If you are substantially oversampled your "real" resolution will anyway only be that 6.5 MP, and then it makes sense to go to bin 2. But in any other case this might not be advised.
