ASKAR 103APO Review - Special Guest: Sarah Maths
Thankyou Sasha. Great video as usual.
So I see that the "detail" slider is gone. I found that made quite a difference on what the actual DSO (galaxy) looked like in terms of sharpness. Is there an explanation as to why it's not there anymore. Or is it simply renamed as the "iterations" slider?
Here a statement from Russ about this: “The “detail” parameter is no longer needed nor available with AI3. This parameter was a bit of a crutch to compensate for the fact that AI2 was not fantastic at maintaining detail. AI3 solves this. This parameter is still available when using AI2. If the detail setting was being used for sharpening, use BlurXTerminator instead (prior to NoiseXTerminator as always).”
@@viewintospace Ok, thanks for the explanation!
Mate, if you need to deep pixel peep pictures to see a tiny difference between a (over) priced and free software. I'd say the free software wins... Cosmic Clarity is also AI3 based and free and does a great job.... now you do realize that this is only a hobby? and most of your audience will never see a difference, right?
First of all, Cosmic Clarity is a deconvolution software and not for denoising, AI versions of different applications can not be compared, and when it comes to Graxpert, it is not only slightly inferior than NXT, but also much slower. THAT ALL SAID, yes, for a lot of people free software will do the trick and nobody is forced to use paid one. But when you spend >5K on equipment, as quite a lot of astrophotographers do, quite aware that this is "just" a hobby, it is a logical consequence that you also want the best software to get the most out of the data you acquired with your expensive equipment. And the best denoising software is since yesterday again NXT.
@@viewintospace hahaha.. OK... enjoy.
@ Cosmic clarity does have a AI3 based denoising feature... and still free... not so "first of all" after all, is it?
A defining trait of so called “ just hobbies” is that there’s no limit to how much one can spend in pursuit of perfection. People often spend far more on hobbies-sometimes frivolous ones-than on practical necessities so for some, it’s much more than “just a hobby”.
noise x > blur x or blur x > noise x
Always BXT first - as NXT might destroy information BXT needs!
@viewintospace One thing it doesn't seem to do in PI - is remember your choice of AI. So it installed and informed me there was I new AI branch available - when I selected that it all the new menu options appeared and it ran as expected. Then I closed it and reoppend it again - it had reverted back to the old menu and old AI - informing me there is a new AI available. Is there a way to select AI3 and may the choice permanent? PS Easy fix - I launched it from my saved process icons - that remembers the original set up - so I simply deleted the icon, added it back then saved the process icons and it all worked as expected!
Good that you found a workaround - but it should remember it without doing anything special - worked for me without any issues
@@viewintospace I have all my frequently used process icons sotred vertically on the RHS of my screen - but such stored icon must hold their original settings - so if you change on you must have to refresh the stored process icon!
70 years old and new to Astro. do you have to have a guide scope or can I just usemy AZ-EQ6 GT with my REDCAT 51 and DSLR for NINA?
Guiding definitely helps! If you’re new to Astrophotography, have a look at my Basecamp videos: ua-cam.com/play/PLBu4UCUEK1KYuRvQU137aEbI8CG3-qRPb.html
Installs fine and seems to work very well!
Thank you so much for this comparison.
Sweet! What perfect timing! I am putting together a mosaic of the Heart Nebula, my CFF160's first light, and was about to apply GraXpert when I seen your video, and am I glad I did. Sascha, Thank you... again!
Glad I could help! 👍
Thanks! Always better to see your comparisons than blind myself trying to figure out what’s different. Now to go re-process. . . .😂
Thanks a lot! Appreciated!!!!
Good presentation. I like your minimalist approach to your room.
Got it! It's available right now.
Oh my word! What a difference! As I was watching I updated and ran the new AI NXT on my own short integration of the Jellyfish I shot a couple of nights ago, Previously NXT left a bunch of artifacts unless I waited to run it until after stretching and in the starless phase. Just now I opened my 2X drizzled master did an STF and ran the new NXT at default settings and the result was amazing. Perfect. I knew Russ had to be working his tail off behind the scenes. It was worth the wait.
Russ has now released a User Manual: www.rc-astro.com/noisexterminator-2-ai3-user-manual-pixinsight/
I currently have NX 1.2.0 AI 2 in PI. I ran check updates and it says there are no updates. Any idea why?
It will be available in a few minutes at 10am EST - at least that is what Russ communicated.
@@viewintospace Thanks! BTW, your tutorials are entertaining and informative. Nice job!
And NXT just became available.
Is the new version of NXT only available with the new version of Pixinsight?
This release is currently only available for PixInsight 1.9.x
@@viewintospace thank you
@@viewintospace Russ stated that it is available for 1.8.9-2 and up...
I've now made it available back to PixInsight 1.8.9-2 and later.
The update apparently hasn't been implemented on Windows PI.
It will be available in a few minutes at 10am EST - at least that is what Russ communicated.
Adam Block is live with Russ Himself….
I know, you always have a choice, the long or the short version... 🤣
Your broadcasting at 720p so it looks terrible.
The video is 1080p - might be that on your side the connection was bad at it is limit it. You might try it now again out of Premier mode - how then it works with 1080p
It is now. For some reason when you were broadcasting it was locked at 720. Thanks
That's how it always is when a video is super fresh. UA-cam can be slow sometimes to compress and they start 480p and up.
If I cut down 10 to 15 trees, a dome would then make sense. Then, the Eagle 6 makes sense. Alas, in the Portland, OR USA area, we get like 30 clear days a year. So, I am actually considering moving to Nevada. I have a Geiger counter to use on site checks - don't want to spend my retirement money on a nuclear contaminated site. So far, I got 5 viewing days under my belt capturing the California, Soul, Orion, Pleiades, Horse and NGC 896 using a Beelink SER5 PC I had on hand and a GL-iNet wireless router so I could take it with me and not have to change the setup. I use RDC on a 10-inch sub-$1000 Android tablet to do polar alignment, PHD2 cal and monitor progress. My desktop connects to the Beelink using RDC to setup the sequencer because using a mouse and keyboard with a 24-inch display is easier to use. I watched your video on monitors. I didn't want to pay $1600 to $3500 for a good editing monitor yet so today, I should get an ASUS PA27JCV, a 5K, 27 inch IPS, which at $800, should be a step up over my 2K 24 inch IPS monitor. I once had a 32 inch monitor and had neck strain. Felt like I had to scan the area to work on the computer. Not glossy, not OLED, not large, reviewers said intensity was good at 500 nits thouh perhaps not perfectly uniform in intensity across the panel, slow USB ports, horrible speakers - anything good about reviews? Comments were, it is a start into 5K with good color. Will see if I can see smaller editing changes in GIMP than is visible on my 2K monitor or if I wasted $800. If so, then I'll be looking at a 6K or 8K monitor. Need to stay on a retirement budget or will need to get some income for this hobby Maybe one day, if I continue in this hobby, a truly nice monitor, a site without obstacles, a dome of sorts and an Eagle 6 will be in order. I appreciate the review. Nice to know what is available
Now the good parts about Nevada is also, that you will not have to cut down any trees, as there are almost non.... 🤣
Great review Sacha. Being a Windows PC, do I have to hook the Eagle to the internet and run Windows Update to keep the system updated? Thank you,
You can update Windows like at any other PC, but it is not a must and all the software you are using is also running on a not fully updates OS. In the two years I have the five, I never actively initiated an update but the system might have done it anyway when I was online. I'm always online when I shoot that I can use NINA plugins like Lightbucket
The CPU on the Eagle 6 is a bit weak. Would go at least with a 6s to be honest. Or the pro version with 16gb of RAM
Weak is a relative term... If you want to use PixInsight on it like me for example for Live Stacking in NINA then by all means you should go with the Pro (I have no clue who would actually need the XTM....). But if someone is only using NINA and PHD, then the Celeron is by far good enough. Acctually Filippo told me that he was very much impressed to see how well the Celeron performed.
Coole Fliegerjacke! Darauf wäre sogar unser Schweizer Ex-NASA Direktor DrThomasZ neidisch.
Now that the Eagle 6 is out I might be able to afford the ASI Air mini
Interestingly, just received a Eagle5 S today, informed the Dealer I was returning for the Eagle6 S. He says most dealers were just informed yesterday on the release. Also, PrimaLuceLab has taken the Eagle 5 family off their web site. It is now obsolete!
Great video Sacha! I was keen on getting the 5S but now delighted in this new release!
I took your challenge and ran your three fits though WBPP v2.8.2. No files were rejected. I'll attributes the success to software updates over the past 2 years because your skills must be better than mine (Oh, I forgot luck beets skill every time). If you wish to review the logs, shoot me an email. I'm a Patreon.
Well, WBPP also went a long way in these years - so hopefully it can cope with this today 😉 Still thanks for trying!!!
EXCELLENT step by step process.
I also would like to add that the map is not accurate. Even though I drove 2 hours away to supposedly Bortle 2 sky I can't see the milky way or M31 Andromeda Galaxy. Nearest city is ~35km away, behind a mountain, with birds flight. But it's enough to cause so much light pollution. I live in Turkey and I don't think there is anything under Bortle 6 here, even if the map says there is.
Also consider that this maps are not so recent and that cities might have grown substantially since then.
Thank you for the info. I am totally new to astrophotography, especially the software, and am in the process of building a new computer and noted under system requirements that the new release is geared to linux. I have no desire to use linux, MAC or AMD processors. I am not as computer literate as the audience, but the impression I get is that I should forget using PixInsight and essentially forget high level astrophotography. You may have save me a great deal of money. I'm sure the wife will love that, but for me ... Total let down.
Don’t worry, PixInsight works perfectly well on any recent Windows PC.
Nice video. :-) A question I also have the Tribad Antilia, which is managed in the SPCC. This four-band filter, can it be managed in the same way? Using the Triband setting?
I usually process it in SPCC like no filter was used and it turns out fine
@@viewintospace Put the sony sensor with IR filter and nothing like rgb channels
I personally doubt that Block can give me the useful info that you manged to do in 12 minutes in less than 4 hours! lol lol Bring lots of coffee and energy drinks when you start a Block tutorial! 🙂
u said u dont use pixinsight for stacking, can u tell what u use for stacking?
Sure, I use APP - AstroPixelProcessor
@ thx
My workflow for removing gradients is extremely successful and is exactly the same for every image I process. I copy the image (4 time now) and use GraxPert, SetisDBE, GradientCorrection and now MSG with default settings on the images. I continue processing with the best result, and there is ALWAYS one that is better.
Thanks for the video, we are really looking forward to watching your full review video of the AM5N, Clear Skies! 👋
Yes, I'm aware that is still missing, but it has a reason! So it might still take some time until I will shot this video.
@@viewintospace I hope its a good reason and not a bad one, not trying to rush you btw, just commenting to support you Sir! all the best!
@ No bad reason at all, just want to test with an additional scope 😉
@@viewintospace adding additional scope is always a good reason and better content, we will look out for this AM5N Review when ever its ready is ok, thanks for your time mate! Clear Skies
Moin Very helpfull video, thanks. But where the heck is the butterfly nebula? When searching Stellarium shows no butterfly nebula, but Schmetterling-Nebel, NGC 2346, in Mon. Sadr resides in Cyg.
(NINA findet gleich 3 Buttefly Nebula)
isn't there a telescope that is a traditional visual that still guides me on where to find stuff with a cell phone holder to make photo's easier?
Sure, there are many go-to telescopes like that. Have a look for example at Celestron NexStar 6SE

Your room looks inconsistent with Switzerland. I lived in the Rheintal in the early 80s.
You see how extreme the climate warming was since the 80s.... 🤣
@@viewintospace LOL!
Thanks Sasha for this video (and the rest of them as well). I wonder if it not be better to put it in the “upper” position to avoid any conflict with the space to your dovetail. I see you have the focuser partially extended but if you need to use a different focus it could be a poblem. By the way, is there any problem in putting the wheel in the UP position? Thank you again
At a ZWO camera there is no up or down - just put it on one way and then turn it at the scope the way you like. And yes. I also have the EFW looking upwards on the rig.
Would this be ok to use with the ASI 2600 MC Duo? I’ve heard too narrow a band pass might interfere with guiding.
I use the ASI2600 MC Air with thus filter and the Antlia ALT-T which is much narrower and it works fine with both of them!
Really bad idea to use BlurXTerminator in my opinion, if you let the sharpen stars options many very small, few pixel sized structures will be identified as stars and will make on them star processing, especially on the default values. At least the sharpen stars option should be put to 0, but it will still mess up some small details. The AI was not trained for this. Unsharp mask is much more effective and realistic. In rest I agree.
I hear that you do not like the idea and you are free to not use it. Given many viewers achieved great results with BXT shows that the idea might not be as bad as you state. But as the AI was not trained for this - I fully agree on that - results vary based on many factors.....
@@viewintospace my problem is that probably I used a full disc with a small focal length and that is why I had many small details transformed into "stars". Just sayin' as a heads up. In larger magnification factors like yours probably works better. I appreciate your work :)
I have to say that I like the before more than the after. IMHO. I will definately putter with this app. Thanks for all your videos.
Where's the section and comparison of LRGB data?
There is no possibility for palettes with LRGB - it is what it is - LRGB - full stop..,.,
Another excellent video. Thank you.
Thanks a lot! I've been banging my head against a wall for almost 2 weeks now trying to make MGC work with different projects. The main problem is that I was convincing myself that MGC should be doing a better job than myself trying to manually correct for the gradients (and it should in theory...). But at hindsight I came up with similar conclusions to yours, so at least I get a bit of comfort watching your video!
Thanks for the video but unfortunately the link does not work for me. Comes up wit "invalid request" ?
I changed it now to the Seti Astro homepage where you can copy the link right from the page.
Invalid link...
I changed it now to the Seti Astro homepage where you can copy the link right from the page.
Another well-balanced video. It's nice to see a YT-er who gets what smart scopes are for - some will never get it. I would suggest a middle ground - stack with the available Seestar-specific script in SIRIL, crop, gradient-removal, deconvolution (object/star), denoise in GraXpert, then back into SIRIL for stretching. I get results which I am very happy with - more than I have a right to expect with a complete setup for $500 and free software. BTW - Siril's Seestar-specific script does a great job on minimising field-rotation 'noise' - I assume during it's 'normalisation' step. BTW^2 - GraXpert has a command-line interface which has allowed me to code a Winows GUI wrapper to run GraXpert how I like it (and it doesn't crash like the default GraXpert GUI does from time to time). All good fun !!!
Thanks for sharing - seems really to be a great option for the ones who what to get the best out of it without spending big bucks!
@@viewintospace There are a lot of tweaks one can do in Siril - but for stretching a starless image (after using Star removal) - I just hit the auto stretch button in 'Histogram Transformation' and apply and close. Then I open 'Generalised Hyperbolic Stretch Transformations' and switch to the 'INVERSE Generalised Hyperbolic Transform'. Moving the 'Stretch Factor' slider moves everything down nicely (like a black-point adjustment) and then tweaking the 'Local Stretch Intensity' nicely brings up the subject. All done in less than a minute ready to recombine with the starmask image. Gets me where I want to be without spending heaps of time.
Interesting video. What if you shoot OSC with an Antlia Triband RGB Ultra Filter with the SII band pass?
That is not NB anymore. This is more like UHC (Lightpollution). So you can't use a tool like this - process with an RBG Workflow.
