This video is well put together and I love how there’s different hide levels, I have 6 ball pythons. 4 are adults and will have 4’X2’X2’ enclosures. This addresses the issues I was having with their setups
This was a timely video for me as I should be finishing the stand for my new aquarium upgrade for my goldfish in the next couple weeks, which means an upgraded habitat build for my Amazon Milk Frogs in the old goldfish tank and then setting up for the corn snake I'll be getting for Christmas! Relevant and interesting watch!
Take a shot everytime he says adhere. Jokes aside Very creative set up. Impressive. A bloke who loves what he does. Top work, giving me some ideas when I have to update Paul Scales set up once he gets fully grown. Clicking subscribe now
This looks super cool! I recently upgraded my ball python to a 5 foot terrarium as as well, although mine involved a lot less DIY because I'm lazy. I'd also like to go a bit more naturalistic and include some live plants but my snake loves to go on rampages and weighs 2.4 kg so I don't think many plants could withstand her.
Brilliant idea with the subterranean hide mate! May retrofit my royals bio enclosure with similar! Personally I wouldn’t have the heat mat underneath but nice touch for nighttime heat if the house gets cold 😄 top effort!
My thoughts was to get the perfect temp both above grown and below ground that would be the only way to do it. The above ground would have to be to hot for it to penetrate through the substrate just like in nature
@@NORTHERNEXOTICS Fair enough mate! It’s a cracking idea anyway. Well done! 😊 between this and your crested gecko enclosure build, learning a few tips and tricks here 😄
Wow that's bloody brilliant, I bet your Royal Python is going to absolutely love his new home Richard. Have you ever considered making up naturalistic vivs for people as a business, I bet you would get quite a lot of customers and would make a packet doing it.
Great video is a vivexotic Viva+ Arboreal large deep good for a frilled dragon I can get one for £232 in the uk the enclosure as I don’t want to be paying nearly 1k for a pvc one
Don't know if I like the heat pad Idea because i tried it and ended up taking it out because i thought it wasn't really doing anything, and when that snake craps in that hide you got to dig it out but interesting to see what happens 👍
A great enclosure for a royal! my only question is why no drainage layer/clay balls? I've been looking at bioactive setups and most seem to use them, is there any advantage/disadvantage to not using them?
@@NORTHERNEXOTICS I try to add your face book so I could show the one I am working on but this thing won’t let me lol but I see what you was going for now awesome
What if he burrows down a bit and gets burnt on the heat pad, do you have any suggestions on a sheet cover for the bottom of the viv that thin enough to let heat through but thick enough that will eliminate the chance of burning, things can always go wrong no matter how well you plan
ok, the one thing I hate is the plastic wall mounted hide. can you figure out how to rig up a similar hide made of cork bark tubing or some other naturalistic material? could you maybe half a big cork tunnel, afix one half to the wall, and adjoin the other to the first with velcro or magnets in case you need to fetch out your snake? something like that? can you investigate? I really love your how to vids. and I really love bioactive enclosures. experimenting here in the Sonoran Desert with bioactive rack units for humidity loving reptiles. Its an ongoing issue here in AZ!
@@NORTHERNEXOTICS Sorry mate can I ask a quick bit of advise something you might know! Have you seen the Aztec hides, would an adult BP fit? If you’ve seen them just I want to order a eye pleasing hide but worried won’t fit
Is the DHP and heat mat your primary heat source? I like them for nighttime heat if necessary, but they really should be having proper basking bulbs for the IRA & IRB.
Hi mate, got a few Qs about this set up, I have a royal python too and I would love something like this for him! How often do you have to change substrate, or do you? I know bio active means you don’t, but I have had a mite issue in the past with my snake and I believe it was due to the substrate I was using at the time possibly - Do you just have to spot check inside his hides and pick up the big pieces of poo and let the clean up crew to do the rest or do you have to scrub the insides of the hide as per? A bit scared of covering up the vents with earth incase the bugs get out too lol
Can I ask. I have a 8 month old Male Royal. Is a 4ft x 1.5 ft x 1.5ft enough space for him even when he reaches an adult? . Its a financial situation so trying to get the biggest on my Budget. I'm trying to think long term. Thank you.
I want to make an emclosure just like this. I have a wooden viv sealed with epoxy and I want to put in a heat mat but I am worried because many people say you shouldn't use a heat mat in a wooden viv and inside the viv under substrate. How do you do this succesfully?
Heat mats are not a good heat source, overhead heating is much better for them. A halogen flood bulb connected to a dimmer/dimming thermostat is the most natural and beneficial option during the day. They produce infrared A and B like the sun, heat that penetrates deep into the skin tissue and heats them far more effectively than heat mats. Whereas heat mats only produce IRC, which only heats the surface of their skin. Ceramic heat emitters are good for nighttime heating.
@@nightinggale6470 I use both. Since a mat is not enough to heat the cage but I like the mat and my snake enjoys the belly heat when he is digesting. Goes onto the mat everytime he eats.
@@HelloWorldxx3 the mat isn’t necessary, but it’s good that you have a lamp. Lamps provide belly heat by heating the surface below them, especially if it’s something like slate.
@@nightinggale6470 But a ball will never bask out in the open so a heat lamp is useless for me. I use RHP for ambient temps and the mat for basking. My python never just sits there out in the open. And i don't want to force him by taking away the mat. The majority of keepers use mats so I don't see a problem.
@@HelloWorldxx3 ball pythons absolutely will bask, both in the open and cryptic basking (only exposing part of their body). Providing plenty of plant coverage, including around the basking spot, will allow them to bask without being exposed. RHPs and heat mats only produce infrared C. A heat source that produces IRA and IRB is immensely beneficial for them. The majority of keepers don’t know any better. I have many reputable sources that are worth taking a look at, but I comment them often enough that UA-cam has started marking them as spam, so I might not be able to mention them. I’ll try, though.
Never put a heat mat inside a enclosure, if the animal goes to the toilet where the electric cord goes in the mat it can cause fire. That almost happened with my terrarium. Thank god I was home and smelled it.

A great enclosure for a royal! my only question is why no drainage layer/clay balls? I've been looking at bioactive setups and most seem to use them, is there any advantage/disadvantage to not using them?
Because they can burrow and get trapped under the barrier between the clay and substrate. That's why the plants were planted a diffrent way also
Yeah if you don’t use them everything will rot and get mold and die or get animal sick
This is awesome my only question is why did you go for the green and not a gray with like fake moss
I was thinking of the contrast between background and the animal. He stands out a little more
There is modifications coming though

You HAVE to use a thermostat with heating pads for this animal. So it’s not a problem bc it can’t get too hot
