- UONGOZI Institute interviews the 3rd President of Tanzania on leadership and the challenges faced.
Mr. Mkapa, a journalist, diplomat and politician, was elected President of Tanzania in November 1995 and re-elected President in 2000 for another five year term. As President, Mr. Mkapa continued the liberalization of the economy that began under his predecessor. He privatized most of the state owned corporations and pursued free market policies designed to attract foreign investment. His policies won the support of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund and resulted in the cancellation of some of Tanzania's foreign debts. He encouraged investment in education so that the country is ahead of target in working towards universal literacy, this in the face of drought and disease.
He was and continues to be active in conflict prevention, management and resolution in the Great Lakes Region of Africa, and is an active player in regional economic co-operation within the East African Community, and the Southern African Development Community of which he is Chairperson.

I'm here after his death, as Tanzania and Pan Africanist we have lost one of the precious gems in the continent, may your soul rest in peace
Very sound leader indeed. A rare breed in Africa. This continent needs more of such leaders to take this mother land forward.
This is the first time I've actually listened to H.E. Mkapa and I enjoyed the interview. I think this interview was objective, informative and it revealed the man's approach to problem solving. Corruption is still the biggest challenge TZ is facing, followed by lack of patriotism. I believe when Tanzanians start to love their country, and authorities remove the unnecessary bottle necks to the systems Tanzania will greatly prosper (Decentralization). Tanzania needs a new constitution.
very inspirational and educative interview!
H.E Mkapa was very eloquent and articulate. I enjoyed the interview a lot, He did enough during his tenure and was a true diplomat. RIP Mzee Mkapa.
For sure it's president Mkapa who opened our eyes about a quick changing world in the sense of privatization( private sector economy), Globalization, and Science and technology which was the move of the world in 21th century. Before most Tanzanians were haunted by Ujamaa slogan and had negative views about the mentioned. It's Mkapa who set a blueprint for our today's booming economy despite a lot of shortcomings that he encountered RIP my fallen Hero.
R.I.P comrade.
It was a brilliant interview .
There is something to learn from you comrade.
Ndg. Mr. Ben is my lifetime idol.
objective and intelligent leader he is, I just wondered why this program is not given the publicity it supposed to have. It is not aired enough, low viewers etc..
Watching this after you're gone. Great Leader and thinker, and for sure we have lost a head.
RIP mr president,,,,ur contribution to Tanzania nation will live long.
Beautiful and great ideas from president Mkapa - the late and I pray for his soul! RIP
you will be missed H.E Ben Mkapa..we were privileged by God to have you as our President. May God be blessed
A speech is full of nationalistic ideas, self reliance and reality attitude which sound great to me. But the implementation was difficult.
