The WORST Week For Gardening BUT The Grow Room IS THRIVING! | Allotment UK

  • The allotment is like a swamp at the moment after the deluge the UK has had over the past... well, forever it seems! the wet weather just keeps coming. So the allotment itself is very slow, with most of the growth being in the greenhouse and polytunnels. And speaking of polytunnels, we've had a bit of a disaster with one of those on my mum's new plot, but more on that in the video..
    There's LOADS of growth on the grow shelves at home though, which are now completely full to the max. So I'll update you all on the progress there. Really exciting stuff! everything is ready to come down to the allotment soon, we are just waiting for some better weather!

    Oh lord Jim it certainly has been a challenging start to the grow season. But bright side you and mom both have some lovely seedlings on the go. Chin up and soldier on it’s what we do 👩‍🌾. Have a sunny week ahead Jim, Ali 🥶🌞🇨🇦

      It's relentless isn't it! I only just today put the sweet peas and edible peas outside. That's about it for now. Supposed to dry out soon, hang on in there and don't give up! 💪 I think everyone is feeling behind at the moment, I feel bad for the farmers!

    So sorry about the polytunnel. High winds are one of the worst weather types to deal with. I know you said you feel behind but I think you have loads on the go. Your grow house is choc a block. Hopefully you’ll continue to make great progress this weekend. All the best. Mags

      Thanks Mags for your kind words. Just waiting so I can get the plants down to the plot. Dry weather coming up promises plenty of allotment sessions this week so I'm hopeful I'll catch up ☺️

    I've always found coriander quite easy to grow to be honest. I sow trays in mid February, keep indoors until they germinate. Move to greenhouse. When a little bit larger I either prick out into modules or plant individual seedlings directly into the ground (survival rate will decline slightly if pricking out directly into the ground). Cover with fleece, check again in May for a harvest.
    This year I lost them all to slugs, so I'll be planting dill in their stead, which I grow the exact same way, aside from dill taking longer to germinate and grow.

      I think one of the common mistakes people make is not giving them enough space. They need more space than your ordinary herbs. I give mine about 20cm

      @downtoearthwithjim  3 місяці тому

      Thanks for the tips! I've found the slugs demolish mine too or they bolt very quick. I'm definitely going to sow some more and remember your tips 😁

      @@downtoearthwithjim They just go to seed very quickly in summer. When I start them in February I'm able to get a nice harvest through May, then when summer starts they want to flower. Mine have all been eaten by slugs after planting, and I concluded it was probably too late to sow more. I may have been wrong though.

    I would repair the polytunnel by sliding the existing tubing into a blue water pipe that fits tightly over it using feary liquid to help it fit, this will make it far stronger and still cheaper than buying a complete new tunnel. I would cover it with a covering from Premier tunnels who are reasonable in their prices.

    • @Petetrenouth
      @Petetrenouth 4 місяці тому

      I would be throwing it in the bin and warning others not to buy them, as they are not fit for purpose.

    • @downtoearthwithjim
      @downtoearthwithjim  4 місяці тому

      That's a good idea, but I think the frame is far beyond repair. Every piece of pipe is broken and it would just be too difficult to repair. Even the ends where the bolts join each piece together are snapped so nothing to hold pieces together

    • @ibrstellar1080
      @ibrstellar1080 4 місяці тому

      @@downtoearthwithjim I'd use the broken pipes for a low Tunnell or use it for a fruit cage as everything is getting expensive to buy these days and the quality of everything seems to be get worse.

    The first leaves (called cotyledons - not true leaves) on seedlings are supposed to fall off when they've done their job and new true leaves are growing.

    • @downtoearthwithjim
      @downtoearthwithjim  4 місяці тому

      Yes they are. But I don't think they should be falling off this soon. Usually it's when the plants are much bigger

    So sorry your Mum’s poly tunnel was destroyed 🙁 Good to see all the activity under the lights tho’ 🌿
    I have a couple of lights and heat pads in the garage and most of my experiments are surviving so far. It really helps to know how you correct leggy shoots - I’m on that tomorrow!

      I'm wanting to start getting the grow light plants down to the plot asap. Electricity usage can't really be justified when the greenhouse is 30 degrees and the days are much longer. It's just those night temps, tomorrow night is -1c forecast. Good luck with those leggy seedlings!

    Against the fungus gnats, if you can keep the top dry, cover that with a thin layer of Diatomaceous earth.
    The polytunnel is sh1tty, but keep looking forward. Every problem is a chance to get better at it.

    How long did it take the carrots to come above surface? Good to see the slugs left them alone. I suspect mine have all been eaten, but it could also be that they simply haven't germinated considering how cold it's been. Sorry again to see the damage to your polytunnel.

    • @downtoearthwithjim
      @downtoearthwithjim  4 місяці тому +1

      To be honest it took a good couple of weeks for them to start showing. It has been pretty cool. Slugs enjoy demolishing young carrot seedlings. It seems many of mine have germinated but there are a few empty patches - I may need to fill then in with more seeds if the slugs are to blame. I'm going to surround the raised beds with copper tape soon

    I have some heirloom Tom's, most doing the same with the lower leaves falling off. Their all inside by the window so temp is not the issue, I let mine dry out to much a week ago so I'm thinking it's a watering issue

      It's interesting.. my F1 hybrids aren't doing it. Just the heirlooms. They seem to be less resistant to many things including disease. That's the tradeoff for the unusual colours and flavours of heirlooms isn't it

    Onions looking good James as are the peas, my seed sown onions doing good not as tall as yours, heartbreaking about the polytunnel 😪leaves could be falling off for either over watering or under watering but they look really wet, they maybe stressed, are the leaves turning yellow then dropping ? I'm hoping to do more sowing this weekend and get the paths strimmed tomorrow, Steve Colwell

      Yes some were yellowing just on the first leaves. A few days on now and the soil is much drier, no more leaf drop and the true leaves are growing nicely so it's all good I reckon ☺️
      I'm TRYING to grow enough onions to last a year. We tried last year but it's harder than I thought... Ran out around Christmas time!We've got about 600 of them here this year though 😂
