The artists aren't usually the problem. It tends to be that the radio stations just don't showcase the more interesting stuff, so you end up with what we have now. In order to find good music you really have to find it yourself, even if that only takes going as far as looking at artists / albums rather than the select tracks given to you. That said, I still think there's a precedent set by radio pop that encourages a less enjoyable style (for me). I'm sure there are people who like it but when that's basically all you hear when you turn on a radio like that, it's real easy to just turn it off.
From what i understand, radio stations play what music studios give em. They have basically no say at all, that's why most stations dont have that many songs on rotation at any given time. If you've ever listened to the radio for more than a few hours at a time, you'll notice they just play the same 12 or so songs on repeat, because that's all the studios give em, and that's all they have the means to pay the rights to.
It's so weird though because at the same time who's listening? I don't know anyone who listens to the radio anymore, so why do they keep playing the same 10 songs over and over if no ones interested? You think that'd be enough for them to switch it up. If the radio was actually good for finding new music I'd listen, but it's just a bunch of old tik tok songs. At that point tik tok is a better place for discovery so why not just go there?
If it's a commercial radio station (and though the percentage may vary country to country - most of them are), they play what keeps people from tuning out. Which is to say, easily digestible stuff - because most people who listen to the radio are not actively listening, but primarily doing something else. Public radio might be able to take chances (if it fits in the format allotted to them by whatever federal telecommunications commission), but in that case people can just tune out and still not hear new stuff.
@@rfldss89 I think you're thinking of record labels - I run a studio. Which just means I make recordings, and afterward hand those over to the relevant parties (artist/label). Commercial radio stations can play whatever they want, but will play what keeps people from tuning out (bc they sell ads and they're a business). That can make the music very samey, they wait until a song's a proven hit before they run with it. Public radio can take more of a chance on the stuff they program (since the budget doesn't directly come from ad sales), as long as it fits within the format usually allotted to them by higher powers. Doesn't mean the public won't just tune out though. Also, radio does NOT buy the rights to individual songs. They broadcast songs for free and for every song they play a portion of revenue (ads) is funneled to the relevant rights organization (who then pays the authors royalties) - the amount is usually tied to the amount of listeners the station has at that very hour. If you mean that major labels essentially strong-arm radio stations into playing their music, I'm not gonna tell you that it doesn't happen bc I'm sure it does; although from my experience it's more of an old-boys-club thing, they just discuss whatever's the new thing over lunch and do eachother favors. The 'regular' way of getting a song on the radio is to hire a radio promotor; who has pre-existing familiarity with the station managers/DJs etc, can spin a nice story on the song to get them excited, and keep pushing until they check it out.
@@Thesierrashow while radio's relevance to the pop sphere is absolutely dwindling, with almost zero new young listeners coming in (the avg audience age is climbing rapidly), it's still a more proven method to be able to break an artist (even if there are diminishing returns). Hoping you go viral online is just not a viable business strategy, for anyone. The internet moves SO fast that nothing's ever a hype for more than 2 weeks; on top of that it's ridiculously fragmented. Radio moves way slower (so once you're on, you don't fall off instantly), which makes it actually viable to build on previous successes and build a career. Internet's faster, bigger, more current; but through all that even more of a lottery, which does NOT work if people's livelihoods (be they artist, label etc.) depend on steady commercial success.
Thanks for highlighting "Strangers by Nature." This song beats out "Easy on Me," which is a significant accomplishment in itself. Adele and Billie Eilish seem to be reviving and renewing the art of female vocals, and surprise, surprise, It's Jazzy. Love to you.
There's many female vocalists outside of mainstream American music that aren't your regular pop singers, like Eivør or Susanne Sundfør. Also, this is only in pop music, they aren't reviving anything that doesn't already exist outside of pop music, with all due respect to both Adele and Billie Eilish. The American music market is *extremely* insular, to a disgusting degree.
Between Adele, Billie Eilish, Silk Sonic, Olivia Rodrigo and several others pop music seems to be getting interesting again. There's more attention on composition. For a while, composition had become an afterthought to production. Like you mentioned, melodies had become just one or two notes. Chord progressions were almost non-existent. And you certainly weren't hearing key changes. As much as the pandemic has sucked, I think it's made people want their entertainment to have more substance.
Artists that dove deep in what this pandemic represented are showing in these works all their depths. Since the start I was waiting for this moment, and the Brazilian artists (where I'm from) are not disappointing either, having matured in so many ways
Production has also been brought to forefront too. Kanye releasing that “stem player” for Donda was very interesting. Maybe a few years from now, albums will be released with the projects for each track.
I think we're actually getting to a great decade of music. Never really loved pop, but I have the feeling mainstream artists are actually getting back to more musical experimentations on the melody and the harmony than during the beginning of 2010's.
early 2010s pop music industry was an absolute hellscape lol especially when everyone found out edm was the big thing and shoved the edm structure into every mainstream pop song
I had lost absolute all faith in mainstream music, as it was intentionally entirely derivative of whatever happend to sell at the time. It still is but it does seem like artists are taking more risks, and the music industry has gotten somewhat out of their own .. buttocks. Silksonic on it's own is enough to restore some faith, I'm not a fan of Adele or her music old or new, but I can respect it.
@@grantmalone I didn't intend to talk only and specifically about this song, I was thinking also about Jacob Collier, Billie Eilish or Bruno Mars, who are also making pretty original experimentations eventhough this song has a classic feeling.
@@grantmalone I think to some degree pop will always be at bare minimum somewhat self referential, but the difference with Adele or Billie eillish or silk sonic is that the influences are a bit out of the bog standard and are also much more significant. Pop is once again just becoming the term for music that is popular instead of the typical 4 chord song with some sort of catchy hook, and that makes me excited. Considering that music genres in general have loosened in definition in the past decade or so it will be interesting to see where it leads. So many incredible up and coming artists that have developed solid followings, whether it’s Jacob collier and his incredible compositions, jordan rakei with his electronic infused sound, Tom misch with his John Mayer influenced funk soul mixture, jakub zytecki and his unique guitar tone paired with some great non diatonic work, plini with his surprisingly melodic and complex progressive metal, Cory wong and for that matter vulfpeck as well becoming borderline mainstream, Tennyson with high effort production techno jazz, Anatole muster making accordion jazz a thing, eriksson kaner with some great jazz infused compositions, Michael mayo changing the vocal jazz landscape, James Francies with his incredible polyrhythm work, Lizzy mcalpine stretching the definition of the typical singer songwriter, quickly, quickly making very nice electronic music after a start in lo-fi, the olllam making Irish fusion a thing, Alfa mist with his hip hop infused jazz work, and so many others young and old that have really changed the landscape in ways we did not expect. Collier started with a UA-cam video for example, and Tom misch started posting beats on SoundCloud when he was in high school. The way to success is now very open and the expansion of the studio to just your own bedroom will be wonderful for the world of music for decades to come.
It won't come as a surprise that this track was co-written by Ludwig Göransson who was responsible for the Mandalorian music among many other scores. Always love hearing pop in collaboration with experienced composers. This has the makings of a new standard.
I know Childish Gambino/Donald Glover worked with him for multiple albums and I also believe he orchestrated a lot of the Black Panther movie score as well. Legend.
And most will never know who he is, one of my biggest problems with modern music is most of the time we dont know the names of the people who actually WROTE the music.
Charles, are you able to release a piano cover for strangers by nature. I love this chord progression especially the effects you add to it with your playing.
I had a super similar reaction when I heard Jacob Collier’s “Once You” for the first time. I just couldn’t believe it was *original* and not some jazz standard I’d never heard before. I’m so happy that musicians are finding success with songs that aren’t just Four Chords And A Hook.
I would’ve loved Frank Sinatra to have sung this one. It has that old pop vibe that reminds me of the Great American Songbook. Anyway, Adele does an amazing job.
I don’t really listen to a lot of Adele’s music but I gave this whole album a try and was pleasantly surprised because of this song and a good handful of others (Love Is A Game, Cry Your Heart Out, and All Night Parking to be exact - I love how she dove into old school soul and a little bit of lofi!). But I absolutely loved Strangers By Nature and I’m so glad you talked about it because it truly is a beautiful song!!! Love this video too!! 👏🏼
The way your brain works, is so perfect for understanding music. Haha I always enjoy your perspective on music and also the piano playing is incredible!

Hey, I know this will be buried in the comments but your channel has inspired me to get back into music. I was taught classical piano starting from a very young age, but certain trauma associated with that made me stop when I was around eleven. You've inspired me to give the piano, and music in general, a second chance. Thanks.
Yeah for you! He does it to me, too. 12 tone, also. I love finding musicall knowledge in things im already listening to! Especially 30 years after ive been in school of any kind.
Yes, absolutely! I also hear a similarity to Christmastime is Here by Vince Guaraldi from the Charlie Brown Christmas special of all things; I'm not sure if it's maybe in the same key or has a similar chord structure? Wistful and nostalgic and just a little sad.
What you were talking about with the I-V-I is really common in classical and it’s just so good I love how much motion you can get just from quickly switching between 2 chords. You don’t need new chords to go new places, just put the same chords in a new context
In every single video you make you can tell how passionate you are with music, listening you explain what makes this music amazing is just like a child telling his mom what he discovered in school. I love your content and I hope you keep enjoying making this videos
I had a similar feeling about Billie Eilish's first album. Bad Guy was such a predominant song from that album (and don't get me wrong, it's a great song). But the rest of the album was full of such uniquely experimental and daring songs, and I had the impression that Bad Guy didn't fully represent the album's general style and musical diversity.
“Strangers by nature” caught my attention right away! Was out walking, listening to the song on my headphones, and just had to stop, close my eyes… and listen, while the sun was warming my face. So beautiful. Made me smile. Thanks for giving me a better understanding of why I enjoyed this song so much🙏🏼
Could you hook your piano up to some sort of visualizer software to display on the side?? I watch all your videos and I’m constantly rewinding and watching at .25x speed to see what notes your fingers are pressing when and for how long. By the way, huge fan, you’re the best
If you want you can download the video and then rotate it 180 in a editing program because you can see all his keys. Plus learning to use your ear since his hand covers some of the notes is good training.
This is how I feel about the Silk Sonic song "Put on a Smile." It's one of the best songs I've ever heard, but it seems like only the singles from the album I've seen get talked about.
I think it's because they're not as good for casual listening. It's kind of odd if you're on a road trip with friends and a super slow song comes on that doesn't fit the vibe. It'll probably cause you to turn the station. Completely agree about put on a smile though. Great track!

When you were talking about the diminished major seventh chord it suddenly hit me what it reminded me of -- Hawaii: Part II by Miracle Musical! That whole album dabbles in some really jazzy chords and particularly likes to have really high-tension buildups leading to spectacular resolutions just like this Adele song!
I love how much musicality and attention to harmony you can see in this song. Silk Sonic is bringing back a lot of that too! I remember someone on Genius saying that it’s risky to play more “musical” songs on the radio. However, I really hope they do because it’ll increase my respect for pop music.
Amazing video its the people like this who inspired me to create my own channel for piano and it would mean the world if you subscribed :) happy christmas
@Ryandal Gilmore english isnt my first language, so help me understand your frustration. Which word(s) she didnt pronounce correctly? And if she did wouldnt she sounded more like Siri/Google Assistant/Alexa?
@Ryandal Gilmore diction, meaning that you’re able to understand the words, is all that matters. If you’re understanding the words enough to say she’s not pronouncing them correctly, then the diction is fine and there isn’t an issue. Changing the way you pronounce something is a stylistic choice that is fine as long as it’s still understandable, which it still is. Celine Dion does that quite often. Very clear diction but she pronounces words differently for stylistic reasons.
I love this dude he appreciates beautiful works such as this and many others, you've opened my eyes to the beautiful side of music such as melody work and chord progressions I hope to be on your level one day
That’s because he’s not a music snob that just sticks to one genre and judges other genres. He appreciates things that have a good sound good regardless who or what it comes from
Since your react video of Adele's Easy On Me, I've gone back and been listening to all her music since her 19 album, and the growth is incredible! Her music was always great and her style is intoxicating, even back then, but the way her musicality has matured is astounding! On it's own, 19 and 21 are great albums, but they sound like baby siblings to 25, and like children when listened against the latest offering! Always loved Adele, but just so much enjoying her musical growth! Thanks for reinvigorating me with her music.
I think you're right about the musical feel. Specifically, throughout Strangers by Nature, all I hear is La La Land in particular. Albeit already jazzy, it meshes well with those sweeping musical melodies.

Strangers by Nature is my favorite song on the album. It almost has a Carpenters feel and the vocals and the chords reminds me of the song “Because We Are In Love”. Both have the same warmth in the chords and the vocals are just so beautiful.
It’s so validating seeing how much you loved Strangers By Nature too! As soon as you started talking about it, I was like THATS THE TRACK I LOVE! Feeling very seen rn

Been giving the album a spin since it released. Can't get past Strangers. I just keep replaying it. It's Judy Garland and early musical choices. But it's also reminiscent to me of the music the Diamonds would sing from Steven Universe.
I think Adele needs to see this. I'm sure she would absolutely LOVE to see you freaking out like this! I hadn't heard this song before but soon as it started I was like WHAT DECADE IS THIS FROM???? It's soooo beautiful.... Goosebumps! It's like an old Christmas song, mixed with old Disney, old school Broadway musical.... It has such a timeless quality to it! I love watching you though, you are SO passionate about music and it brings me so much joy to watch your happiness!! Also I love how quickly you figure everything out... You're amazing!! 😍😍😍
A lot of Japanese music that I love uses a lot of chord progressions like this. You should check out the NieR, and NieR: Automata soundtracks. The music is incredible. I recommend starting with the song "Ashes of Dreams".
the soundtracks studio behind Nier series is Monaca, they are amazing. imo in some more comedic anime series they flex their jazz muscles more, like ... just listen to the theme song of Hanayamata and Anne Happy.

Every time any artist releases an album that has that spice to it, I always wait for Charles' opinion on it and his breakdown of the songs because I love how in depth he gets and his little improvs in the review.
I'm just in awe of how much about music I haven't seen yet, like... I never knew this is how much music can really amount to!! I've only ever played around with sounds and made them work, not even studying music properly...! Once I get the time, I will get a piano, and start studying music properly... I've missed out on so much as a kid growing up around music!!!
Charles, your enthusiasm is contagious! And your ear is magical. I love watching you figure out the harmonies while raving about them. Thank you for leaving in the imperfections and not taking yourself too seriously.
As a keyboard player myself, your videos are amazing and explain so much in depth. Thank you for your page, you’re very inspiring to me. it fills me with pure and utter joy seeing people totally geek out over music like how you do I think its really special when you get to see someone express that its like theres this aura of all these glowing colors that surround them when they just get into the music and then they yell their "OO!"'s and "RRRAH YES"'s I can see the satisfaction and pure love for the music just overflow out of you, and it sparks this inspiration and sense of magic in me keep geekin out man, i absolutely adore it :D💚🎶
The first song you showed gives me major La La Land vibes especially the way you played it on piano. Great video and I hope more musicians follow in her footsteps.
I've just been scrolling to see if anyone else has said this. I ABSOLUTELY get the La La Land feel from this song and yeah, it might have been the instrumentation but it really does seem reminiscent.
I like youtubers like this. They really have something good and beneficial to share. They have skills, they know what they're going to share; they have a point, a sense. Thanks for existing in social media, Charles.
I had gotten so used to modern pop music that when I initially heard this I was like "what?". but after listening to it a few more times I really just couldn't help but feel that nostalgic old Disney opening esc feeling. it also feels a bit like a few songs from Steven universe. like escapism. just beautiful
Always love hearing your take on songs. I loved her album, I love the progression of each song, takes us on a journey of break up to loving again. It starts off slow and sad then the final song is gorgeous and triumphant. It is like a Disney movie. And Adele got Spotify to take off the shuffle option on her album as its meant to be played consecutively.
You need to check out Ludwig Göransson, the guy who produced that track with Adele. He also produced the Creed film score, and Black Panther which he won an Oscar. 😁👌❤️
I was “classically” trained, and i always wished I had the wiring to function as a jazz pianist. The level of technical deconstruction you explain if baffling, Charles, I love it. I know what i love to listen to, but you can explain WHY i love to listen to it!

Hey Charles, I don't think you're gonna read this ever but I just wanna thank you from the bottom of my heart for always being excited about music and spread your excitement to the world. It's really empowering for some musicians and music enthusiasts who might be questioning whether they should pursue their passion and love for music. But watching your videos and how you practically embrace music with open arms is really something. Keep being an inspiration to us all. Mad respect. 🌻
I took Music Theory classes in High School many years ago, and the thing I miss most are the tangents my teacher would take on a subject about certain chord progressions or minor scales. Soon enough we would be listening to albums, or watching films and listening to their scores -- teasing out what pieces of music do to achieve their purpose. This video, and your channel in general, scratches that itch to be back in that desk. Thank you.
Yeah. I'm also one of those who don't care too much about Adele because of those modern "non melodies" noodeling around a very few notes. I'm SO looking forward to listeng to this whole song now. I absolutely love that kind of style with smart chord progressions and beautiful expressive melodies! I might become an Adele fan after all! EDIT: I listened through the whole album yesterday. None of the other songs will be close to becoming a like favourite "Strangers by Nature", but it's a really good album, and none of the songs made me consider turning it off. That actually says a lot, as I'm the kind of guy who like my silence.
It feels like Easy On Me was a hit because it most well fit the preconceptions the average listener has of Adele, when the whole album is a milestone in her career marking how much she has evolved.
I just like how when I first listened to the album I instantly fell in love with All Night Parking and it's one of my fav songs atm, but then I looked at the title and it's just an interlude😭
Strangers by nature sound a lot like what Melody Gardot and Diana Krall had been doing years ago... You should definetly do a study of women Jazz singers please!
Well, the whole reason to release a single is to drum up excitement for either a new record, a tour, or (in today's attention-economy) to keep eyes on the artist as a brand. Key point here is that they don't need to excite the people who were excited anyway (i.e. the core fans). A single is not 'the best song off a record' (if there is even a record attached), it's 'the most easily digestible song ', for the people who either 1. don't follow you/your music and need to be reintroduced, 2. have never heard of you to begin with, 3. are at work, or driving, or doing other stuff and don't want to hear emotionally/intellectually challenging stuff off the radio/Spotify that's there only to keep the mood up, 4. follow you, but need to be introduced to a new style you're moving forward with. It's a 3-minute elevator pitch for yourself/your music, it's a business card, it's a mood board, it's an appetizer. It's the work that best survives passive listening, that best introduces you to new listeners (the vast majority of which are more casual music listeners to begin with). Which is to say, usually upbeat, uptempo, compactly written. Some artists' work thrives better in that environment than others (cue discussion about how the top 40 is bullshit and music used to be better yaddayadda)'; but either way no shit that your biggest fans (who want all of what makes you 'you') are less partial to work that is, for lack of a better term, 'diet-You'. So yeah, Easy On Me is a better choice for a grand return to the fold than the super-mellow practically-jazz tune (even if yes all these harmonic choices are cool as hell).
ever since I had to stop going to school for music due to financial reasons I've felt pushed away from music. Your videos over time have made me remember my love for everything that is beautiful. Thank you

Powerful vocalists in many countries around the world. I agree.
What are you talking about?
If female vocalists left your playlists, that's entirely on you.
lianne la havas
I agree
Between Adele, Billie Eilish, Silk Sonic, Olivia Rodrigo and several others pop music seems to be getting interesting again. There's more attention on composition. For a while, composition had become an afterthought to production. Like you mentioned, melodies had become just one or two notes. Chord progressions were almost non-existent. And you certainly weren't hearing key changes. As much as the pandemic has sucked, I think it's made people want their entertainment to have more substance.
Adele is pop soul billie is alternative pop olivia is teen pop silk sonic is soul funk
Artists that dove deep in what this pandemic represented are showing in these works all their depths. Since the start I was waiting for this moment, and the Brazilian artists (where I'm from) are not disappointing either, having matured in so many ways
I like that perspective on the pandemic and the substance!
Production has also been brought to forefront too. Kanye releasing that “stem player” for Donda was very interesting. Maybe a few years from now, albums will be released with the projects for each track.
Silk Sonic with high quality videos as well. Very classy and tasteful - some humor as well.
I think we're actually getting to a great decade of music. Never really loved pop, but I have the feeling mainstream artists are actually getting back to more musical experimentations on the melody and the harmony than during the beginning of 2010's.
This is pop soul with jazz influences
early 2010s pop music industry was an absolute hellscape lol especially when everyone found out edm was the big thing and shoved the edm structure into every mainstream pop song
Legend.
Ludwig is goated
And most will never know who he is, one of my biggest problems with modern music is most of the time we dont know the names of the people who actually WROTE the music.
It is done similar chords as the mandolarions tunes
How much of this song did Adele write? How many/much of her songs does she write?
Charles, are you able to release a piano cover for strangers by nature. I love this chord progression especially the effects you add to it with your playing.
hmmm.....
@@CharlesCornellStudios hmm indeed
as long as I hear mario screaming on those juicy chords
@@CharlesCornellStudios, I'd like to hear that as well!
@@piercejenkins13 I had died when they edited that in 😂
I had a super similar reaction when I heard Jacob Collier’s “Once You” for the first time. I just couldn’t believe it was *original* and not some jazz standard I’d never heard before. I’m so happy that musicians are finding success with songs that aren’t just Four Chords And A Hook.
I thought the exact same thing
Jacob Collier’s music is so deep but so accessible, I just love everything about it.
Me too.
I would’ve loved Frank Sinatra to have sung this one. It has that old pop vibe that reminds me of the Great American Songbook. Anyway, Adele does an amazing job.
Yes, Frank would’ve been awesome too! Maybe Jamie Cullum would be a good candidate as well.
With this thought in mind- can someone get in touch with Michael Bublé? Ive always thought he has the right sound to be a spiritual successor
@@OtakuChefAD why does it have to be someone already famous? Let's find that next Sinatra.
The first thing I thought when I heard this song was “Wow, this sounds like a standard.”
@@OtakuChefAD i prefer frank sinatra
I love Charles' enthusiasm - so infectious!
Amazing video its the people like this who inspired me to create my own channel for piano and it would mean the world if you subscribed :) happy christmas
Hey, I know this will be buried in the comments but your channel has inspired me to get back into music. I was taught classical piano starting from a very young age, but certain trauma associated with that made me stop when I was around eleven. You've inspired me to give the piano, and music in general, a second chance. Thanks.
That's right. Go say hello to an old friend. Good luck to you.
good luck!!!!
We’re all so proud of you for making that decision that I’m sure was very difficult, you have fun my friend :)
Yeah for you!
He does it to me, too. 12 tone, also. I love finding musicall knowledge in things im already listening to!
Especially 30 years after ive been in school of any kind.
Hallelujah
If Adele doesn't get a Grammy outta this, I'll be shook.
This or an evening with silk sonic should win
Knowing the unfairness of the Grammies it’ll probably go to Olivia Rodrigo or some other overrated artist 🙄
@@blayd_ We can praise how genius this is without putting down other artists
@@danielrebora1350 most of us.
Pff the Grammys sucks,
"Strangers by nature" reminds me a lot of the tune of "I'll Be Seeing You" popularized by Billie Holiday!
Yes, absolutely! I also hear a similarity to Christmastime is Here by Vince Guaraldi from the Charlie Brown Christmas special of all things; I'm not sure if it's maybe in the same key or has a similar chord structure? Wistful and nostalgic and just a little sad.
@@MiklaneTrane its that flat 6 that he keeps pointing out. Idk if vox did it but Adam Neely did a video in why that is 😅
What you were talking about with the I-V-I is really common in classical and it’s just so good I love how much motion you can get just from quickly switching between 2 chords. You don’t need new chords to go new places, just put the same chords in a new context
In every single video you make you can tell how passionate you are with music, listening you explain what makes this music amazing is just like a child telling his mom what he discovered in school. I love your content and I hope you keep enjoying making this videos
“Tell me you’re a fan of all music without telling me you’re a fan of all music”
That chord progression you were obsessing over is like “Christmas Time is Here”. so gorgeous.
i also thought it sounded a bit like the outro of gimme love by joji
I go to Adam Neeley for philosophizing about chords. I go to Charles for the joy of chords.
We need "An Evening with Silk Sonic" album review. ASAP!!

I came here to say this lol
If you want you can download the video and then rotate it 180 in a editing program because you can see all his keys. Plus learning to use your ear since his hand covers some of the notes is good training.
This is how I feel about the Silk Sonic song "Put on a Smile." It's one of the best songs I've ever heard, but it seems like only the singles from the album I've seen get talked about.
i’ve seen people praise fly as me and put on a smile quite often but i get you
That’s my favorite off that album, and it’s gold the whole way through
I think it's because they're not as good for casual listening. It's kind of odd if you're on a road trip with friends and a super slow song comes on that doesn't fit the vibe. It'll probably cause you to turn the station. Completely agree about put on a smile though. Great track!
Amazing video its the people like this who inspired me to create my own channel for piano and it would mean the world if you subscribed :) happy christmas
After last night is also amazing
When you were talking about the diminished major seventh chord it suddenly hit me what it reminded me of -- Hawaii: Part II by Miracle Musical! That whole album dabbles in some really jazzy chords and particularly likes to have really high-tension buildups leading to spectacular resolutions just like this Adele song!
Wow didn’t expect to see this album in this comment section but agreed, rate that album!!
Yes yes yes
Ayy.
You mean the tally hall guys?
Definitely. Wonderful tunes and continued musical exploration by former Tally Hall members-maybe a Rob Cantor: Not a Trampoline is in the works!
Yeah, I got that vibe as well.
I love how much musicality and attention to harmony you can see in this song. Silk Sonic is bringing back a lot of that too! I remember someone on Genius saying that it’s risky to play more “musical” songs on the radio. However, I really hope they do because it’ll increase my respect for pop music.
Please please PLEASE post more covers, Charles. I would love to hear your rendition of this song and so many more.
Amazing video its the people like this who inspired me to create my own channel for piano and it would mean the world if you subscribed :) happy christmas
She’s worth the listen for the musicality of her voice alone.
@Ryandal Gilmore english isnt my first language, so help me understand your frustration. Which word(s) she didnt pronounce correctly? And if she did wouldnt she sounded more like Siri/Google Assistant/Alexa?
@Ryandal Gilmore I very rarely pay much attention to the pronunciation of words in singing.
@Ryandal Gilmore tell me you're not a singer without telling me you're a singer.
I love this dude he appreciates beautiful works such as this and many others, you've opened my eyes to the beautiful side of music such as melody work and chord progressions I hope to be on your level one day
He became one of my favorite youtubers so quickly
That’s because he’s not a music snob that just sticks to one genre and judges other genres. He appreciates things that have a good sound good regardless who or what it comes from
Oh thank god I was so worried he was gonna say he didn't like the other songs
love how pop artists are getting more and more advanced with the actualy music theory that there tracks are built on
Since your react video of Adele's Easy On Me, I've gone back and been listening to all her music since her 19 album, and the growth is incredible!
"30" is the closest thing we will get from Adele to an Amy Winehouse tribute album and it slaps so hard.
I think you're right about the musical feel. Specifically, throughout Strangers by Nature, all I hear is La La Land in particular. Albeit already jazzy, it meshes well with those sweeping musical melodies.
Amazing video its the people like this who inspired me to create my own channel for piano and it would mean the world if you subscribed :) happy christmas
I like how she sings the diminished voicing on the word strangers it’s just cool
the last 3 songs are so good (hold on, to be loved and love is a game). mmm chefs kiss
That final chord progression, which you demonstrated so well, is almost like a coda in a classical piece. Love it.
Octotonic melody! 3:07. That's a big part of what makes that line so cool.
30 is already my favorite Adele album. It's full of tasteful choices and heartbreaking situations.
I’m so happy you’re geeking out on Strangers by Nature. It’s my favorite track from the album.

Thanks for making me discover this song! 🙏🏻
I'm pretty sure this song is just straight up Vocal Jazz
Been giving the album a spin since it released. Can't get past Strangers. I just keep replaying it.
It's Judy Garland and early musical choices. But it's also reminiscent to me of the music the Diamonds would sing from Steven Universe.
i adooooore the harmonic writing of the diamonds music !! incredible chord writing for such a small group
It's nice to hear a current pop tune with a lovely melody over a classic, sometimes surprising, chord progression. Nicely sung by Adele as well.
When your appreciation for a song goes from getting goosebumps to filling up your eyes with tears…🥰
I love how Charles’ camera makes us believe that his piano is as long as the wall in the background
Thanks Charles for finding pop songs/artists that I can actually listen to - it's been years since I dared to listen to the radio!
A lot of Japanese music that I love uses a lot of chord progressions like this. You should check out the NieR, and NieR: Automata soundtracks. The music is incredible. I recommend starting with the song "Ashes of Dreams".
They really use jazz chords to create an emotionally charged soundtrack. Especially the city ruins theme.
Ah no wonder this song is reminiscent of Ghibli too
the soundtracks studio behind Nier series is Monaca, they are amazing.
imo in some more comedic anime series they flex their jazz muscles more, like ... just listen to the theme song of Hanayamata and Anne Happy.
Y E S. The Nier series soundtrack would be great!!

Every time any artist releases an album that has that spice to it, I always wait for Charles' opinion on it and his breakdown of the songs because I love how in depth he gets and his little improvs in the review.
That subtle Mario flying across the screen at 4:35 had me cracking up haha. Greatt’
Silk Sonic put out Leave the Door Open as their single, yet I think Put On A Smile is easily the most well written and exciting one on the album
When the vocal harmonies come in, it reminds me SOOOO much of like the beginning of Peter Pan or something. So good and so under utilized.
As much as I enjoy the educative side of Charles' videos,
the most entertaining is seeing how passionate Charles geeking out on music. 😂
You should analyze “To Be Loved”. Incredible harmony work in that one.
I would love to make content like this one day and analyze music in my own unique way. Just had to share, you’ve brought the love I’ve had for music before back to me again.

it fills me with pure and utter joy seeing people totally geek out over music like how you do
I think its really special when you get to see someone express that
its like theres this aura of all these glowing colors that surround them when they just get into the music and then they yell their "OO!"'s and "RRRAH YES"'s
I can see the satisfaction and pure love for the music just overflow out of you, and it sparks this inspiration and sense of magic in me
keep geekin out man, i absolutely adore it :D💚🎶
The first song you showed gives me major La La Land vibes especially the way you played it on piano. Great video and I hope more musicians follow in her footsteps.
I've just been scrolling to see if anyone else has said this. I ABSOLUTELY get the La La Land feel from this song and yeah, it might have been the instrumentation but it really does seem reminiscent.
Oh boy I thought Charles was about to do a Rick Beato.
hahahahaha underrated comment

You should totally check out Salvador Sobral’s Amar Pelos Dois, a beautiful song with which he won the Eurovision Song Contest in 2017
The joy on your face matches my own. I'm glad I came back to this a year later, for multiple reasons, musical and spiritual.
I had gotten so used to modern pop music that when I initially heard this I was like "what?". but after listening to it a few more times I really just couldn't help but feel that nostalgic old Disney opening esc feeling.
it also feels a bit like a few songs from Steven universe. like escapism. just beautiful
2:44 Aaaand it's a diminished scale!! Just a unabashed diminished scale walk-up! Such a good move for so many reasons.
The part you play at 4:38 reminds me of the classic "As Time Goes By", featured in Casablanca.
You need to check out Ludwig Göransson, the guy who produced that track with Adele. He also produced the Creed film score, and Black Panther which he won an Oscar. 😁👌❤️
So that explains part of why it sounds so good! Ludwig Göransson is a master of sound design and production, in addition to being a genius composer.
@@InventorZahran yep. damn straight.

I have a new appreciation for this album and all the work that mustve gone into it
I heard the album and thought "charles cornell will freak out about it..." and here we are
I love the album..its a great recording
I took Music Theory classes in High School many years ago, and the thing I miss most are the tangents my teacher would take on a subject about certain chord progressions or minor scales. Soon enough we would be listening to albums, or watching films and listening to their scores -- teasing out what pieces of music do to achieve their purpose. This video, and your channel in general, scratches that itch to be back in that desk. Thank you.
Hey would you look at that - Adele using the Errol Garner “Misty” chord as observed by Adam Neely 🤗
The first part of the progression reminds me of Mild High Club's Homage, which used Autumn Leaves' progression as well, if i remember correctly
Dude I'm so glad you covered this. I'm blown away and would have never thought to listen to it on my own
It feels like Easy On Me was a hit because it most well fit the preconceptions the average listener has of Adele, when the whole album is a milestone in her career marking how much she has evolved.
The Beatles were known for taking inspiration from the Underground scene. It's possible Adele just lifted Gardot's style and hoped nobody noticed.

Just added this so i can hear the „wow“ over and over again
To answer Charles' outtro question: My current favorite from the album is "I Drink Wine" because of the lyrics.
You love to see this man really enjoy the craft of another artist.
Thank you
Ludwig Göransson helped Adele produce “Strangers by Nature.” He’s a gift to the music world
Nice
Not just that, but he co-wrote the song too. Dude was using his scoring skillz.
