EP 90 - How to manually pollinate echeveria flowers
Building on the skill I showed you in the last episode, which was about sowing echeveria seeds, in this episode I now show you how to pollinate flowers manually.
If you ever find yourself wanting to venture into the very fun world of creating your own hybrids, then I invite you to join my journey in this.
This is my first time pollinating echeverias so there might be more efficient ways to go about this. With that said, I'm pretty sure my method is a good starting point for my budding career in hybridising echeveria!
Perhaps someday we'll see "Cerrillo" join the likes of "Wright" in the list of well-known echeveria hybridisers!

Awesome music thanks to EpidemicSound
I tend to post a lot of non-video stuff on Facebook. - Навчання та стиль
This is the best video I've watched on pollinating echeveria'! Thank you!
You sound like me. I can't resist the beauty of plants and I'm very weak to buying new plants.
Very informative thanks so much
Hi Chuck 🤗
Awesome stuff. Looking forward to the new babies 💕💕
Lynsie
Fantastic! Its great to see someone sharing their Love for these Amazing Plants! Brilliant! Subscribed!
I started cross pollinating begonias last year so I'm stoked to start others now. I know there's thousands of begonias but I thought it'd b easy to start with. I'm prepping to do it with my succies now. So exciting!!!
Wow! I have expected this kind of video for a long time ! Thank you so much🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
This video is awesome!!! I learned so much from it. Can’t wait for update.
Omg thank u so much for explaining
Chuck, This is so exciting! Thanks for the flower anatomy refresher! I'm inspired to try this in the spring! Can't wait for the updates! Hope Zach is feeling better! 😉💖😉
Zach is doing better. He's still not eating/drinking his usual amount but apart from that he's pretty much back to normal! 😃
I see this video was recorded October 2018, have you posted any updates on results? Did you get any babies?
So cool Chuck! Can’t wait the results🤞🏻🙌🏻👍!
Same! I can't wait for next month. Probably by then I could have my first seedlings!
Great video!! I can't wait to start growing my echeveria neon breaker seeds. I love their flowers
That sounds exciting!
Funny stuff Chuck! Great info!
Haha thanks Ray, glad you enjoyed it!
So I guess I cannot use pollen from the same plant that I want to use it on? :(
I only have one echeviera in bloom.
Muy lindas las echeverias
Thanks for the info! I've got an orion and a panda face that are both flowering and want to take an attempt at pollination.
excellent video, greetings
Gosh, I can’t see myself doing this... too many details to attend to! I hope you have success with your matchmaking 😝🌷
after pollinating what do I do next? Do I remove the flowers? How do I get the seeds?
Do you have an update video if the pollination is successful?
Hi Chuck, great video, did you cover over the pollinated flowers to prevent them from being repollinated by flying insects etc
How did your hybrids work out?
You could ask Debra Lee Baldwin how long from start to finish it could take . And I remember some videos she did with Wright family
I have a plant like that with a bunch of the flowers and I have a flower stock that’s not upright it’s kinda hanging there. Is it dead, do I cut the flower stock? Do they regrow ?
Also is it necessary to use 2 different plants or can you use 1 plant if it has multiple flower stalks
Very interesting video! Thanks a lot for the clear explanation! I'll do the same...but the thing is that i'm not sure if insects or bees have pollinated the flowers before I get the brush 😊
Yeah I was running into that same problem with some plants that I didn't cover. I skipped the older flowers and pollinated the younger ones thinking they haven't gotten to those yet.
I'm planning on creating Barbachensis it's a mixture of Barbadensis and chinensis I can't tell if it's edible, how big it is, the color and the thickness
One day people will talk about Cerrillo hybrids. Cheers!
That would be nice!
what happen after this pollination? do u have vid po?
I've just cross pollinated my Romeo and my Laui, curious to see what happens, a Champagneof successful (can you imagine). I'm not expecting much as I don't think I have enough experience in seed harvesting and growing from seed, but I am hoping to follow along with what you're doing and hope to have better luck this year!
erikassucculents how did it go?
@Il Rednax Salvador they germinated but it took a while, and it was the middle of summer when they did so they didn't make it! I haven't tried again since but I will again someday. Chuck's method was great!
@@azumarill80085 @Il Rednax Salvador they germinated but it took a while, and it was the middle of summer when they did so they didn't make it! I haven't tried again since but I will again someday. Chuck's method was great!
@Il Rednax Salvador thank you! Definitely need to keep them indoors when the summer gets too hot!
@Il Rednax Salvador I'm in Australia in the cooler part of the country but our summers can still exceed 50°C!
Does this technique also work for other succulents? e.g. Kalanchoe
Was there a result video?
Great video. Do you know how to stop ant invading pots. Such a pain. Any magic tricks out there?
i use anti bugs chalk idk if u got them in ur country
I know you focus on succulents, but can you hybridize Sabal Birmingham with Sabal Minor var. McCurtain?
hi chuck! may i know if i need to remove the flowers that are not pollinated? thank you!
Nott needed, but it helps so you can keep track which ones are pollinated.
Say for ecample the seed plant is lola and the pollen plant is fabiola. And you change it so that the seed plant is fabiola and the pollen plant is lolla, would you get a different plant?
Fantastic niche channel! So glad that I've found this. It's so exciting to see all kinds of different channels to grow here on UA-cam! Very educative sir, well done! Would you mind giving me some feedback too? I'd love to hear from you because I'm trying to become a better content creator myself! Thank you so much for your time, I truly appreciate it!
Hi Rico, I'm wondering how you stumbled upon my channel especially since we have very different genres haha!
Anyway I had quick look at your content and I saw that you mostly do vlogs. Your video production seems to be high quality, but I haven't looked much into your storytelling.
Anyway as someone who also does vlogs, disguised as how to or tutorial videos, I can tell you that growth will be steady. It could be steady slow, or steady fast, depends on how popular the topic is, or how well you do the initial social media push (to get your channel known).
My main advice for a fellow vlogger is not to expect too much right away, unless you're going for controversial topics. Growth will come in a steady pace. Your graphs will be kinda linear with a few spikes. But the great thing about this is that we end up with a very strong community. People who comment and keep coming back are definitely people who care about your content.
Fantastic feedback! Thank you so much! As a matter of fact, I'm releasing my first: "how to" video while vlogging this evening haha!
How I got to your channel? Easy, I'm always looking for up and coming UA-camrs. So if I see someone commenting on a different channel, I go check them out. This time it was you commenting on a video of video creators (I think)!
Thank you again for taking the time to reply to me, I truly appreciate it!
Great video. That looks easier than I thought. Question: can a single Echeveria be pollinated with itself? I know it's a strange question because leaf propagation is so much easier, but I only have one plant flowering now and want to try it. I love growing anything from seed, and I would have some to trade, if it's even possible.
I've heard but not confirmed that echeveria are self-sterile, so I have no idea, sorry!
Why do you wrap the blooms?
So the insects do not accidentally pollinate them.
Hahaha, i just literally bought a note book for this just to write down what you told us huhuhu, im going to use this note book for succulents and plants, i just bought a grade1 note book though! Ahahha
As long as it does the job eh? haha!
Why did you cover the flowers po?
That's so I can be sure the already open flowers do not get pollinated by insects while waiting for the rest to open up.
i remove the flowers becuase by the time i get to them its full of lice and ants ... sad really ... hahah
omg same!
All of this mess 😂😂😂😂😂
Don't you emasculate the mother plants?
As usual, too long video
