I was recently weighing between this amp and the Marshall Origin20. Despite all the Origin haters, the Origin, like the HDRX, is really great for clean/edge of breakup 60’s Marshall tones. (People just don’t get that the Origin is aimed at pre-Plexi, early JTM tones - it’s right there in the name ffs: Origin… as in *original* Marshall). I opted for the Origin 20 mainly because it came down to price. I got the combo for over $400 less than what the HDRX 20 head alone would have cost me.
"If you're a clean amp guy ..." - I'm an ultra high gain guy, an I am still thinking of picking this up. Seems to be just such a great little amp that can do so many things (and yes, probably even high gain, if you hit it hard enough, haha)
The settings on my HDRX 20 are: Presence: A hair past 6 Bass: 3.5 Middle: 6 Treble: A hair past 6 HMG and Bright switches are in the up position The master: 3.5 for my gig at the moment Treble and bass on the right are both: 6 This amp goes into a 1998 4-12 Peavey cabinet. My pedals are a 1st gen circuit Keeley Katana that goes into a V1 Blues breaker(on all of the time) into either an Ibanez metal screamer or J Rocket Ikon(gain on both of these are set for a little grit when needed for solos). After that are my Strymon Flint and MXR carbon copy. The HDRX 20 has been my main stage amp since December of 2022. Also, my main guitar is a 1966 Fender Custom Shop with a set of Genesis “Fairfield” pickups.
The hdrx with a dgt is a hella nice combo .. I do find the real magic is just at break up - master I run dimed and bass and treble rather low on the power side 3 and 4 but this is with an ox box to recontrol volume and offer nice stereo direct to front of house if needed … eq bass is totally off treble 6 and presence 8 …. The magic is diming this amp for the power tube tone and then a Klon klone - I’m using a couple but studio day dream is super nice and a boost like a benson or mxr to push pre amp for solos - this gives two rhythm and a lead sound … awesome Amp … my main amp has been a. Peavey classic 50 since 94 but the hdrx has this articulation and flexibility that I’m loving …
Great video man. I have one sitting on top my bassman right now. It’s a little dark for me in a track but I sparkle it up with a little SSL 500 unit. Haven’t tried it live yet. Can’t beat the price for a plexi vibe.
Thanks man! I've been loving using these when I can. I'm normally a fender guy but I've liked it a lot. I have been out of town but I will send you a text about coffee! (donut)
I’ve been tempted to pick one of these up but always flinch as I have 3 amps already … and am kind of dipping my toe into the modelling world just a bit so… and as my co guitar player in our band pointed out I’d end up dialing this amp to sound just like how I did all the other three! ;)
Man you are a great player. You come up with some super amazing clean riffs. Just watched your Nashville video. (Moving down there in 2025)
You’re gonna be a great addition to the UA-cam. It’s good to emphasize the (music) business side on your channel. Yes, the dreaded 1099.
I’ve owned one for over a year now. It’s so good, I’ve sold just about everything else. I want another one.

@@TimAvenMusic Right on man. I'm a Princeton slut myself. No rush. Just holler when you are back.
Love me some Marshall cleans!
