  • Toto - Live at Montreux 1991
Live at the Montreux Casino, Switzerland July 5th 1991.
By the time Toto was invited to play the famed Montreux Jazz Festival in 1991, their success had already been assured. Having established themselves in the ‘70s as an elite band of session players-turned-chart toppers, they were in the midst of a European tour when the call came. It was an appropriate fit. Not only were they able to spotlight their two most prominent hits of the time -- “Africa” and “Rosanna” -- but they were also allowed to express a more progressive posture that would come with their next album, 1992’s Kingdom of Desire. In short, the band were in peak prowess.
Sadly, this marked one of their final appearances with drummer Jeff Porcaro, who passed away the following year. But as Live at Montreux 1991 demonstrates, the core band - Pocaro, his brother Mike on bass and mainstays, singer/guitarist Steve Lukather and keyboard player keyboardist/vocalist David Paich were in prime form.
    Credits:
    Bass - Mike Porcaro
    Drums, Percussion - Jeff Porcaro
Keyboards, Lead Vocals, Backing Vocals - David Paich
Lead Guitar, Lead Vocals, Backing Vocals - Steve Lukather
    Percussion - Chris Trujillo
Backing Vocals - Fred White, Jacci McGhee, Jenny Douglas

A couple of years earlier Toto came to my hometown Lund in Sweden. I sat at the bar at Grand Hotel when Steve came in and ordered a drink just beside me. We came to talk and I mentioned that my band was going to rehearse the same evening. They asked me if it was close and I suggested it was so Steve, Jeff and a bunch of journalists decided to join! We walked there - one kilometers in the snow :D I got to talk a lot with Jeff on the way - he was so down to earth. Finally when we came to the studio I told the guys to sharpen up because Toto was to attend the rehearsal - the band didnt believe me - but then the guys from Toto entered the room one by one - it was magical. We played some of my songs for them - Jeff played the tambourine - like in a dream. Then Steve sat behind the drums and Jeff took the guitar and we jammed on Rosanna (I played the keyboard). The next day our drummer got a bag of drumsticks from Jeff and we hang out all the weekend. We attended on stage at their soundcheck and had the time of our lives.

The video editing predictably sucked, the drum cam angle has Jeff Porcaro's face behind a cymbal, Luke's playing a lead and the shot is on the keys comping, following the black girl all around as she clown dances, generally can't hold one angle longer than .2 seconds, typical music video.

A bit over stated my friend, you need to explore more, plenty of great drummers can do exactly what Jeff could do, some better, but the key is to be the writer of great music and parts of music and Jeff was all about that but to say no one else can do that is factually very wrong.

@@Billfish57 If you play drums, then start listening and studying the greats, and you'll realize there's many who can do what the next can perform. Tho it's rather square boxed to say some better than the next, better at what ? Certainly writing songs as you mention is talent, but using that as your main parameter would deem the likes of Don Henley as one of the greatest all time😂 99% of what you'll ever hear a drummer do is locked into a song and most times limited to how progressive the band/bassist are. It doesn't necessarily deem that drummer incapable of sitting down and nailing a complex rythm in a song or a solo like the next drummer who's "better" than him in your pov.

You'd be hard pressed to find a stage with more brilliant musicians on it than this one.
I grew up as a musician in LA at the time Toto formed. At the time I played mainly keyboards, but for some reason I knew quite a few drummers, including Jeff, Hal Blaine, and Buddy Rich. It irritates me that I didn't get into guitar until later.
Anyway, I can tell you one thing. In the late 1970s, if you asked anyone, any band, which band was composed of the best musicians, the answer was always Toto. There was no question about this. First of all, if you don't know about session musicians, they are the very best at their craft. Their business is working as "hired guns" to step in and knock out a hit tune in a matter of minutes to an hour. Thousands of hit songs that you all know and love were knocked out in short order by people like this. Their skill is mind-boggling, even to a skilled musician. These are people like Hal Blaine, Jeff Porcaro, Leon Russell, Joe Pass, Glen Campbell, Oscar Peterson, Ray Brown, and more. They are people that leave a classically trained person like me agape with their knowledge of music. When I'm around people like that, I feel like I don't know anything.
Toto is composed of lifelong session musicians, the children of session musicians (!) -- guys who were working as session musicians while they were still in high school, who said, hey, let's form a band. Holy shit.
Whether you like the songs or not, you can't escape the excellence of the musicianship. These guys were the best of the best, who decided to form a band and create some music of their own. The result is breathtaking. The only other band that was in this league is Steely Dan, which was two excellent musicians who skillfully tapped the pool of Hollywood session musicians to fill out the rest of the band for each of their tunes.
    Let your ears decide.

I agree with everything you said. Toto have a certain feel to them. Kingdom of desire is a simple song but i don't know why i love it too much. And so is ANNA. Kris Caberte Good lighting, top quality film and a $100,000 camera gave good results back then. We can now come close to those high quality results or even surpass them on a smartphone camera.

@@Assimilator702 do you know what camera model they used back then? me and some colleques from university are quite interested to find out, how exactly they archieved this video quality in 1991. still looks better than some regional TV stations here in Germany today. :D

    • @Assimilator702
      @Assimilator702 3 роки тому +1

Luca Krautkrämer The Major film company brands back then were Arri and Panavision which made the Arriflex and Panaflex cameras respectively. In the early 90’s cameras were often 10 to 15 years old . One thing to note that with film cameras, most research and development was focused on the photo chemical FILM STOCK, the lenses .....which are a VERY important part in film cameras .......and post production techniques. The camera BODY is a very precision and robust machine who’s only job is to pass the film through the gate smoothly and quietly and back into the magazine. So more attention would be paid towards acquiring different lenses and of course using the best film stock for the project. 35 mm was the most commonly used for movies but 16 mm cameras can produce a VERY high quality images. For example The Walking Dead is shot on 16 mm film.
The camera used in this concert film could have been the newest model from Arri or Panaflex.....but its quite possible it was from the 80’s or even mid 70’s. If it was a large production company it’s likely the camera was state of the art at the time while most film companies used older cameras due to the prohibitively high prices.
My suggestion is to find out the market prices for some Arri and Panaflex camera bodies in 35 mm and 16 mm formats, find some lenses and decide on a high quality film stock which is still being manufactured. Decide what your budget is to narrow your search.
Alternatively DIGITAL camera bodies become obsolete quickly which is why a film camera body maintained in perfect condition with a selection of lenses can produce stunning images while never becoming “obsolete”.
