      The duduq (other spelling of duduk) is considered “the soul of Armenia” for a reason! The duduq just has a way of touching the soul in the same way as a guitar would in Spain (and other countries, of course), or the Native American flute does in their respective cultures (there are a lot of variations of the Native flute). But indeed, the duduq is special.

I got a cheap duduk (not the cheapest) but I only get to play a while after soaking wet the reed a shile, I followed your tutorials and managed to play a bit then stopped practising and now I can burst my cheeks before taking out a proper sound :) determined to rewarch and practise again.

      +Ali Mohammed Hi Ali, sorry for the late reply. It sounds like your reed has opened up too wide. The sides of the reed are too far apart and are therefore not rubbing against each other to give you a sound. Try wetting it a tiny bit, put the cap back on, and letting it dry out for a day. Hopefully it will reshape itself.

    Thanks for your lesson, great job :) I have a problem with reeds. I want to regulate bridle to have comfortable opened reed, but when I set it in the best position duduk is out of tune (higher notes). I want to ask you how check if duduk and reeds are good (tuned in A scale) and how to move bridle to the most comfort position without losing tuning?

      +Uka Sz Hi Uka, sorry for being a year late with this reply! Finding an in tune reed is always a challenge. They also change from season to season, especially if you live in a place of extreme weather changes. The best advice I can give you is to have a number of reeds and hopefully there will be an in tune one. Also, you can unravel the thread to make it sharper, or add thread (or tape) to make it flatter. Good luck!

    Very nice, sir! I have a few questions, if you do not mind.
    Are the reeds matched to the duduk? What I mean is, does an A duduk have a specific reed?
    I have a reed that my lungs explode trying to play. It is really thick on one end. I am guessing that reeds come in different shapes.
    Thank you for your work!

    • @duduklessons7239
      @duduklessons7239  10 років тому

      Hi James,
      Yes, the reeds should be matched to the duduk. The reeds will be smaller the higher the key of the duduk. Your lungs should not be about to explode!!!! Sounds like you either have a reed that's not fully open, or it's a thick reed. I suggest thin reeds for beginners. They are much easier to play. Good luck!

    Thanks for these videos. I have noticed the reed opening up more after playing for some minutes (because of the warmth and moist), to the point it becomes very hard to play. The ring to stop it down hardly does its job in this case. How do you deal with that?

    • @duduklessons7239
      @duduklessons7239  7 років тому

      I know, I know. Sometimes you just have to let the reed dry out. Always best to have 2 or 3 reeds on the go, I find.

    • @duduklessons7239
      @duduklessons7239  7 років тому

    Hello Mark,
    thanks for your lessons, which I follow closely. I practiced a lot already, I can produce some nice sounds, even with vibrato. Now I found out that my Duduk is not tuned as your duduk. When I have all 6 fingers down and also the thumbhole closed I produce something like a C. How comes? The length of my duduk is 11.8 inches (30cm).
    I have 5 reeds, 2 cheap and 3 expensive (50€) ones and the effect is the same with all of them. I see no way to play an A with the top 6 fingers down. Do you have any idea what is wrong here?

    • @duduklessons7239
      @duduklessons7239  9 років тому +2

      Brian Berger Hi Brian. Hmmm. All that I can think of is that your reeds have gone through a climate change. Very dry, or very humid. What note do you get when you remove the bridle all together?

    • @brianberger5109
      @brianberger5109 9 років тому

      Hello Mark, thanks a lot for helping me with this!
      When I remove the bridle and play without Duduk I get, depending on which reed I choose and on how warm the reed is: a B (with Duduk: I get an A), C# (Bb), D, D#(C).
      Independently from these differences I can easily play a C with any of these reeds when I cover the first 6 holes + covered dumbhole. With some I have to use more lip pressure with others I use the bridle, but a C seems the easiest tone on the 6th hole. When the reeds get warmer and I take of the bridle the 6.th hole slides down to B with some reeds. But not as far as to A. The A can be found on my 1 hole + covered dumbhole. - I have 3 reeds by Félix Vartoumyan (1 thicker and 2 thinner ones) and 2 differently cheep reeds, which are also quite allright to play. Might I have a C-Duduk?

    • @duduklessons7239
      @duduklessons7239  9 років тому +1

      A C duduk would be my guess. Doesn't sound like you're very close to an A. Often the key of the duduk is carved in a very small letter on the duduk.

    • @brianberger5109
      @brianberger5109 9 років тому +1

      Duduk Lessons Thanks Mark. That's funny just today I saw on www.johnvartan.com/DudukInstructions_JohnVartan.pdf that my duduk has the notes exactly at the same wholes as in most other duduks - Page 7 on top says: The tone A sound if all wholes are covered except the belly (or knee-) hole and the tone C is - as with my Duduk - 6 fingers down. Mmmm... I thought the ususal Duduk is an A-Duduk? Maybe you have a Duduk different from usual A tuning?

    • @brianberger5109
      @brianberger5109 9 років тому

      Hi Mark, I think the PDF document with the instructions I posted above are just a bit misunterstanding. I guess when it refers to C it means "Do" rather than C as 261.6 Hz. So yes, I think I've got an C Duduk. Just wanted to "close" this ;)

  • @DanShorr

    Hey mark !
    First of all thanks for the lessons , they are truly great and they inspire me to practice this wonderful instrument every day , however , i have a small issue that i thought you have some tips solving.
    i first purchased a cheap duduk from ebay and it goes without saying that i had terrible issues staying in tune , i recently upgraded to a much better duduk , i don't remember the name of the master it was made by but it was recommended by alot of professionals duduk players in Russia (where i bought it) and it cost around 350$ so i dont think quility is the issue.
    What i find is that after opening up the reed's although it sounds alot better i still can't get an A (i get an A#) note properly where it should be , i've tried opening it up , moisturizing it , everything ... it sounds great on its own but if i try to play with a backing track \ drone you can hear just how out of tune it really is... how long does it take for a reed to be in tune? am i missing something? any ideas ?
    Thank you !

    • @duduklessons7239
      @duduklessons7239  9 років тому

      DanShorr So sorry for the extreme lateness of my reply. Getting duduk reeds to give you a steady pitch in the proper key is very difficult. This can change a lot due to seasonal change. I can only suggest buying lots of reeds and finding your favourites that are the most consistent. There is a lot of voodoo involved in my opinion. One day a reed will sound terrible, and the next it sound good. There are like people with their good moods and bad moods. But having said that, the reed should be generally matched to the duduk. You may possibly have a reed better suited to a Bb instrument.

      Cosmic Vision Bring the bridle lower. If that’s not enough then yeah, let it dry a little bit. I seem to have the same issues with my reed too sometimes so i just let it cool off a little bit and dry. But then it’s this constant battle between being too dry and then wet again from playing

      Hi Stefan
      Good question. The Balaban is very similar. One difference though, would be the materials used. The duduk is made from aged apricot wood, and the reed is harvested from reeds which grow on the banks of the Arax river in Armenia. Not being more familiar with the balaban, that's about all that I can tell you!

    • @duduklessons7239
      @duduklessons7239  6 років тому +1

      Hi zz. It sounds like the reed is open too wide. If you adjust the bridle, can you close the opening a little? It should be open just a little bit, just enough to get some air through. If it's too wide, the upper part of the reed will not vibrate together with the lower part (remember it is a DOUBLE reed), and your reed won't produce any sound.

    what is an Armenian duduk chick? how is it opened? and how can I be sure I have a playable reed?

      @duduklessons7239  10 років тому

      Hi Dawn,
      If you open up the reed with a few drops of water and it still sounds terrible, you may have a souvenir reed. May sure that you but your reeds from a reliable vendor.
      Cheers

    • @NoChaserz
      @NoChaserz 10 років тому

      Yes, my reed opens up with just the moisture of my mouth. It sounds great for 5 minutes, then opens up even more and it's all over.
      Can you suggest a reputable reed seller? The duduk itself sounds fine. I don't think the seller intended to sell me poor quality reeds, but I think he did anyway. That's the problem with ebay.
      Thanks so much for posting your comment.

      Hi Dawn,
      I would not recommend buying duduks and reeds on Ebay or Amazon.
      There are likely to be of souvenir quality. I would recommend contacting a very well regarded vendor such as Vache Sharafyan in Armenia. They are more expensive but have been tested out by duduk master Gevorg Dabagyan. I’ve had very good luck from these reeds and Vache is a joy to deal with.
      Vache’s email address is: bestduk@mail.ru

      +Jeremia Zimermann ירמיהו זימערמאַן‎ Hi Jeremia. You have to be carefully that you don't leave the tip in water for too long, or it may deform the reed. It should be open just enough so that you can blow air through it, but no more than that. If it's too moist and too open, then put the cap back on and let it dry out. Try again tomorrow! Good luck.

      Hi Schanza. Are you getting too much air flowing through the reed (the reed opening is too wide), or is the reed closed off so that no air is getting through? Either problem will result in no sound being produced.

    • @schanzabukhari6064
      @schanzabukhari6064 6 років тому

      Duduk Lessons I think there's too much air passing through, although I adjusted it.

    Can someone please let me know if there are any culturally innapropriate aspects for someone not of its ethnic background to play this instrument, or are there any limitations to who is allowed to play the instrument and what they are allowed to play? I really love the sound and feel from an instrument like this but I don't want to offend anyone from the culture by disrespecting their rules or traditions.

    • @Giogiogio4
      @Giogiogio4 4 роки тому

      That sounds stupid...... Because modern "Western" instruments are literally just reworked versions of these instruments.

    • @concerned-crisis4741
      @concerned-crisis4741 4 роки тому

      @@Giogiogio4 Yeah, that's true, but the fact that that's true kinda is the whole point. The adaptations don't necessarily mean that the people were taught the instruments. It's kinda like a culture appropriation, but not necessarily culturally appropriate. The main reason that asking whether it's innapropriate or not is because in my own culture, there's an instrument that's really important to our culture identity, and is used for a lot of ceremony, as such this particular instrument has cultural rules that I respect. That's kinda why I wanted to ask in case there was anything like this, I don't want to disrespect anyone's culture just for the sake of playing an instrument. I love the sound, but if I learn about anything I like to know where it comes from and some info about it first.

    Mark do not do this mistake saying armenian duduk. First of all duduk is Turkic word and armenians call this musical instrument thiranapokh.
    Here is the article by Elshad Alili which shows that not only word duduk, but even thiranapokh was not in armenian’s dictionaries up until 20 century
