Which Mic Type is Best for Zoom, Class, Recording 🎙️ 2020 | Headsets, Lavaliers, & Podcasting Mics

- Head-to-head sound comparisons so you can find which mic type is best for Zoom, classes, interviews, and recordings! I use the UHURU "podcasting" USB mic for Zoom meetings, recording online classes, live lectures, podcasts, and my UA-cam videos! It's a great budget option at around 70 bucks. The Blue Snowball and Blue Yeti are fab choices too.
November 2020 update on the phone headset issue: to get them to work on a laptop, you'll likely need a TRSS to TRS adapter assuming you have a headphone/mic combination port on your laptop OR if your computer has separate headphone and mic ports, you'll need a headphone splitter adapter. Thanks for all the helpful comments, much appreciated!

Wow, seriously thank you everyone. Several of you have asked for affiliate links (also, thanks!) so I'm going to do what one of my favorite UA-camrs does (Binging with Babish) and provide both non-affiliate and affiliate links so you can pick your own adventure! In case you don't know: if you click on an affiliate link and buy something, the person posting the link earns a small commission (e.g., from Amazon) but the price to you is the same. Why post both link types? Because I'm making these videos for the love of it. And if you want to purchase through an affiliate link, I want that to be a conscious choice you get to make.

Love that podcasting mic!
What would you recommend in a hybrid classroom situation in which you have some students in-class and others live streaming the session from home? Still the podcasting mic?
Hi Lauren! Great question. Yes, still the podcasting mic. Since you'll be moving back and forth in/out of the classroom, I'd suggest a small "podcasting" mic like the Blue Snowball. Keep me posted! :)
Great question
Related to that question, we have had questions about teaching using a mask... In that event, might a lavaliere microphone will be better because it is picking up sounds from your torso?
@@blahblah4023 Hi John! Great question. I bet a face mask will act as a sort of pop filter, which could make the lavalier (especially more inexpensive ones) sound better by taking down the wind noise/t's/p's. So the lav is a great option for in-class teaching, especially since it allows you to move around the room unlike a standalone mic, which would root you to the desk. The lav mic is also probably a better option in the mask-wearing scenario than, say, a headset with a mic arm, which could hit the mask and in general cause weird interference due to its close proximity to the mask. But for at home "studio" recordings (where I suppose you aren't wearing a mask anyways), the standalone mic is king!
I'm facing a similar hybrid situation next week - my class is very discussion-based and I'm concerned that the personal lav mic I'm feeding into my laptop for the Zoom students won't be sensitive enough to pick up in-class students' questions & comments from 30 feet away. My strategy is to use a second lav mic (I'm limited to the gear I already own and don't have the resources for a proper room mic) placed near the front of the class with both mics feeding into a splitter into a Zoom H1 (for an independent audio recording) into the laptop. It's a little Frankenstein-esque, but I have high hopes.
i like how she just started the video, no intro or fluff
Thanks James!
Same here!! I can't stand freakn intros!!!
I agree as well.
This is the way.
You're right. She's all business. Love it
I was shocked towards the end when you said it's your first UA-cam video 😶 You sound like a professional UA-camr 👍🏻👍🏻 Well done what a start keep it going
That makes my day DR J! Thanks so much.

what the hell? how is that possible to have such a good video as your first work? amazing
@@MemerDad probably has lots of practice in some other context, maybe speaking, acting, who knows what.
I love the way how you precisely explain everything that you have in this video. It helps me a lot in choosing what to and not to purchase since I am just an aspiring voiceover artist. Thank you.
Hi Janet, that is awesome! Thanks so much for the nice comment. Keep me posted on what you decide on for voiceovers! The UHURU sounds great but if you want to go full on pro my dream mic is the Shure SM7B. But it's XLR and you'd need an audio interface for that one. One of these days I might make the upgrade...

This was an awesome video! I’m looking to improve my audio for my work Zoom calls! It’s all so confusing! Going to scan your channel for some headset advice.
Thanks so much for the encouragement!!
Hey Julie, I cannot express how much I like this video of yours. I actually went ahead and ordered the mic Podcasting mic. It's affordable and seem to capture voice really well.
I like how you get straight to the point and do different mic tests right away. No long intro, no exaggerating, no flashy images. Before watching your video, I actually looked at a bunch of other videos and really hate that most of them took so long to talk about the quality of the mic.
Great delivery, overall thoughtful and thorough review. Wish you had more videos! Keep it going :)
Thanks so much! You and me both, lol. Working on the next one. I swear it's on its way, haha.
Concise info, right amount of useful details, charismatic personality, easy to understand vocabulary (not boring) and honest! Amazon and google should hire you as their reviewer.

I wish I could produce content of this quality daily 😅. Thanks so much for the nice comment!
It's not personality, it's just super white teeth :)
So useful! Thank you! Will be looking into getting one of those "podcasting" mics for the Fall semester.
Hi Bridget! :p That's awesome. Thanks for the comment!
This was so helpful!!!! Thank you! Love the way you explain and speak directly!
Yay! Thanks for the nice comment Aneta! 😊
Dang it is so nice to see recommendations that aren't just "get an XLR mic or go home". Thank you! ❤️ I have a Blue Yeti and it's been a bit of a pain (lots of computer vibrations picked up if on desk, very quiet audio if mounted on an arm) but this video inspired me to keep trying!
Would love to see a video on how to effectively monitor your audio - I usually plug headphones into the mic but it feels like everyone else is managing to monitor with levels and such adjusted!
Thanks for another nice comment Emma! 😊 Really appreciate it. Hmmm, in terms of a solution...I wonder why it is so quiet on the arm. One idea is to use something like OBS as an intermediary (you can use this to stream to Zoom and a ton of other platforms) and you can boost the audio volume in the software. I check my levels by recording in OBS and playing back, and once I'm happy, I don't need to monitor with headphones. Keep me posted?
With this production quality, you're gonna have a million followers in a year or two!!
Wow, thanks so much Vishal! 😊

Hahaha, thanks so much Cristian!! 😊
This is such a great video where you're comparing the audio side by side! Thank you
Ahh that's where the three or four ring 3.5mm jack matter, mic is typically the fourth ring but that usually connects to ground in three ring normal jack's 👌 Great videos, very informative. I'm just starting out myself so I really appreciate your content 👏👏👍
Thanks so much Edd! Yes, it was a TRSS issue. Thanks!
Alternatives for zoom meetings on laptop:
1. For office calls, in Headset type, Jabra Evolve2 40 (~$140) works well. The mic cuts out ambient noise pretty well (including ur kids yelling in the same room). Cheaper alternative with mic noise reduction feature: Logitech H340 headset.
2. Combo of 'Airpods + Lavalier mic': For those who already own airpods.. if not satisfied wt the airpods microphone (muffled sound), club them wt Rode Lavalier/collar mic connected to 3.5mm jack on laptop with airpods connected to same laptop via bluetooth. Within zoom settings, select airpods as speakers and Rode mic as microphone.
Hadn't thought of the airpods + lav, great idea. Thanks for the tips!
I really enjoy the style of your videos. Conversational and authentic. Thanks for making this fun.
Hi Rebecca, thanks so much! 😊
Just discovered your YT Channel Julie, Great job! You have a nice way of getting your points and tips across to the audience. Keep up the super work. These kind of helpful videos are much needed, especially in todays' world of so many of us setting up "Home Studios" in support of all the remote/online meetings. Please do a video also of your camera setup, it works very well. Thank you for all the tips!
Hi Mark, thank you so much for the encouragement. It is much appreciated!
I would really recommend the Hyperx Quadcast for online meetings. So nice quality sound with different mic characteristics, touch mute button top of the mic. The mic is lit red when it's active, and it has a jack output for your favorite headset. In Scandinavia we have a hardware store called Biltema and they have a small clip on mic like the one you used on your chest. It cost approximately $3. Dead silent and one of the best I've have tested! Crazy value for the buck! 😊
I haven't heard of this, I will take a look. Thanks!
Thank you for the wonderful video Julie.
Btw I felt the audio levels of this video seems a bit lower than normal.
Thanks so much Venkat! And you're totally right - I should've increased the gain on this video...the irony! 😅 still learning, but I think I fixed it on my other two videos. Thanks for the nice comment.

Thank you for this video Julie, I have blue yeti, need good quality for tutorial recording. The problem is when I use keyboard or mouse. I think Ill get an arm for it and should be OK
Hi Ania, Good idea regarding the mic arm!
This may very well have appeared below, given the number of comments. I’ve had similar issues with lab mics interfacing with computers in general. A cheap workaround is to use a USB audio dongle, which you can find for under $10. I’ve had very good results with these on many different laptops using many different mics.
Thanks so much Steven! It was a dongle problem lol. Needed a TRSS to TRS adapter. The Bose headset still wouldn't work but at least now my lav is happy!
Such a great little series of videos. Thank you!
Thanks again Vanessa! 😊
Nicely done! Thank you for this and your other videos.
Thanks so much for the nice comment, Dan!
Everyone: Nobody’s first UA-cam video can be ~that~ good.
Julie: hold my mic
This made me laugh, thanks Ben!
The problems you are having with " playing nice" is a cable issue TRRS and TRS, think what works on and IPhone won't work on and Android/Laptop, adaptors are available. I use Rode and Sennheiser.
Hi Jon, thanks for the tip - I will investigate that. Cheers!
Great advice and video! Thanks a lot!
Thanks so much @Edible Fitness!
This was such a wonderful intro to mics. THANKS! :)
