Singer Buttonholer Sewing Machine Attachment - Demonstration (Simanco no 160506)

- Today I’ll be demonstrating the Singer Buttonholer! This is one of many buttonholer models made by Singer. This is a vintage sewing machine attachment - the manual has a copyright date of 1948. Use this attachment in place of your regular presser foot to make professional looking buttonholes in very little time. It's quick to setup and with the 5 templates, you can make a variety of sizes in either straight or keyhole buttonhole style.
This video will show you how to switch the buttonhole templates, how to attach the cover plate to cover the feed dogs, how to attach it to your machine, how to change the width of the bight, and finally how to make those glorious buttonholes! I also show a quick tip at the end for how to use a seam ripper to open up the holes easily.

The sound of the buttonholer clacking away brought back memories. My mom bought a 301 1951 (i was born in 1949, so I am three years older than the machine. And I still have it. She sewed for customers and her daughters. I loved the clothes she made for me. They were unique. nobody had clothes like them. She sewed formals and crinolines. When she had a real long seam to sew, she would get the motor going fast and loud. The table would vibrate and it sounded like a volley of machine gun fire. Thanks for the memory.

OMG thank you thank you thank you. I did not know that these attachments existed. I don’t think anyone in my family did either. My mum has a classic 50s singer and my grandmother had a 1930s one. Both of them would still try and sew buttonholes by Hand until I got my machine which has a buttonhole foot, but NOT automatic like this little piece of genius. I’ve never been so excited by a video before!
❤ I have had my great grandmother's vintage sewing machine for 5 years but just started working with it. Realized it is a 1898 Singer. But it had 2 of these buttonholers in the cabinet drawers and I didn't know what they were. So thank you for your video. I will visit again when I get ready to use them.

I have the 1960 model which is essentially the same. Any tips on how to make the buttonholes straight mIne always look crooked. I guess that's why I haven't made buttonholes in more than 20 years!
Hmm, are they consistently crooked? If you do one on a test fabric and check the angle, maybe you can account for that angle in your placement? Good luck! 💜✨

Sorry, I'm not familiar with that machine. But if accepts low shank attachments and has the screw hole on the base of the machine for the cover plate, it might be able to work.
I don't know if anyone will see this but I can't get my cover plate to stay in position... just broke a needle. Does anyone have any advice?
I have a singer 201-
With the Singer 201 you can lower the feed dogs so you don't need to use the cover plate at all! There is a knob underneath the bed of the machine to do this.

What does it mean when my buttonholer is elevated so much that it doesn’t clamp my fabric?
Have you double checked that you have a matching model for your machine? There is something about “high shank” or “low shank” that is important to get right.

She got it when she got her machine. We got a 301 that came with various attachments, such as the buttonholer. We paid an old lady $25 (US dollars) for the machine and assesories. Got a good deal. Needed some cleaning and a little oil, but the old 301 works great!
