  • Olympus was once a titan in the mirrorless camera industry. They were #1 in Japan for a long time. Tiny cameras that looked vintage and were weather sealed. Modern Olympus cameras like the EM1 III had the only phase detect autofocus for micro four thirds, class leading IBIS and electronic stabilization. Most natural color science rivaling Canon. Tiny cheap but sharp lenses. What happened to all that when OMDS OM System took over? We are seeing it play out with releases like the OM5 and TG7. Zero money going into developing new products.
    If you buy today's gear through my affiliate links, OM System will release the almighty OMX with stacked 10MP sensor. 4k 12 bit raw 240 fps, and we all switched to OM System and hum OMMMMMMMMM.

    The OM-5 is actually a great improvement over the EM5 III, it's got the same sensor, processor and video specs of an EM1 III but in a smaller, lighter body. Would’ve been a dream years ago!
    The main problem is the lack of innovation, these are 2020 specs along with some very questionable decisions (USB 2.0, really?).
    If only Panasonic could shrink down the G9 II just like OM System did with the EM1 III, we’d have the perfect camera. The search continues :)

    On the OM topic, I actually purchased the 40-150mm f4 Pro and love it. The "Four Toneh" line-up and small primes is what M43 is all about IMO.

    The 8-25mm is actually a pretty unique lens due to the focal length. If you're into outdoors stuff, it's very useful. It's weather sealed, metal construction (mostly) and sharp. Dunked one into the sea a few weeks ago (together with an EM1) and it survived without an issue.

    • @alpigiano
      @alpigiano 10 місяців тому

      Agreed, it's a fun zoom range, worth choosing Olympus for. But f4 on m4/3...and Tamron (!) is now bringing a 17-50 to FF, just 10% heavier, probably cheaper...

    • @otameal
      @otameal 10 місяців тому +2

      My E-M1.3, the 8-25 and 40-150 f/4 Pro make for a bombproof kit in the backcountry, weighing about 1530g, vs the 2140 of my FF setup (R6, 14-35, 70-200). When shooting landscapes, I'm rarely looking for shallow DOF, so f/4 on MFT is not a problem; I'm usually stopping down to f/5.6-8 anyway. Some other manufacturers have lighter "dust and splash resistant" wide-angles (e.g. the new Sigma 10-18; Sony 10-20; 16-35 PZ) none have this exact comparable focal length range, and I often find myself needing a FL somewhere between 35 & 70 (FF equiv) for proper framing. The 40-150 f/4 is arguably the bigger draw to the system, as there are no sharp, weatherproof tele zooms for APS-C or FF that are close to the same weight. As soon as Sigma release a tiny, lightweight 50-140 to go along with their 10-18 and 18-50, I may be tempted over to a Sony A6700, but not before then. A Sony A7CII/R is also super tempting, but while the wide and standard zooms are a reasonable weight, the lightest sharp, weather-resistant tele zooms are twice the weight of the 40-150, albeit much brighter. And if I want to go *really* lightweight, while sacrificing a bit of image quality, weather resistance, and zoom range, the combo of my E-M5.2 plus 9-18 f/4-5.6 and 35-100 f/4-5.6 weighs only 800g altogether.

      If you're comparing F8 equivalent lenses to F4 FF lenses, might as well just bring Nikon 1 or Pentax Q to weight comparison table.

    • @otameal
      @otameal 10 місяців тому +3

      @@trym2121 Are there any comparable reasonably lightweight, robustly-constructed, environmentally-sealed f/8 tele zooms available for any FF system? I like my RF 100-400 f/5.6-8, but even that's 65% heavier, much longer, not weather sealed, slightly less sharp, and its AF hunts more in low light.

    • @BlazeFirereign
      @BlazeFirereign 6 місяців тому

      @@trym2121 "F8" equivalent in terms of depth of field (which is an advantage for the kinds of photography these lenses are used for), and total light collected (which every MFT shooter is well aware of, they chose to buy into a crop sensor system).
      But the *intensity of light* on the sensor is the same as any F4 lens, irrespective of the image circle that the lens is projecting, or the sensor that it's illuminating. And that's critically important for autofocus. Using an F8 lens would substantially degrade autofocus, and it would put the higher-res FF sensors into diffraction territory, losing some of that resolution advantage.
      Equivalency is only useful for roughly comparing field-of-view and depth-of-field.

    My big problem with OM systems is they have done nothing to calm the fears of Olympus users to want to further buy into the OM system, camera and lenses, If they want us To keep buying camera and lenses and not migrating to other systems they need to earn our trust that they’re not gonna go away in the next two or three years that they’re here for the long-haul making new camera equipment and lenses.

      Who actually worries if they are in business for years to come as I still have 2 old Olympus cameras Em5 and Epl5 they both still work flawlessly and I also own a couple of newer Lumix cameras and several Oly and Lumix lenses so even if my cameras ever stop working and can't be fixed We still have other MFT bodies from other manufacturers. And all of my MFT bodies shoot great stabilisation on photo and video. Also why would you not be afraid Sony will not go out of business because their lens mounts are proprietary but MFT mounts are shared by many. Also I still have 2 Samsung NV7 and they also work flawlessly and that company stopped producing cameras years ago. I also have Fuji, Canon and Pentax APSC cameras who also have proprietary lens mounts. The point is most People own more than one system already. Including our host who no matter how much he dogs a company he will always love his MFTs

    For cameras with photography as the priority and video as a "we do that a little too," OMDS is doing fairly well. Kind of like Panasonic is with video. They emphasized how much the G9ii was designed for photography, yet the only thing reviewers seem to talk about are the video capabilities. I think Panasonic still might work to improve the photography side of things, but each time I ask about it, they say it already does great. My questions don't really get answers. Though perhaps they think I'm too niche in my interests? Of course, the features I'm looking for are similar to what OM-1 already has and what smartphones have had for years. The 5mp addition is a true improvement over the OM-1 that I can see. For sequential shooting, 60fps CAF vs 50fps CAF, with the latest tech that is pretty good. I hope the dual gain ISO improves dynamic range as well as it's stated, but we know in reality these claims are usually pretty high-reaching.
    Everyone who's gotten a G9ii ahead of its release has great things to say about it. If they'd managed not to drag their feet on the photography side for 6 full years, I'd have probably ended up with it instead of an OM-1. Given the speed at which the M43 companies release new models, I'm not sure we can be expecting drastic new releases very often. Perhaps an OM-1 mark ii by 2024-25 if you really push it. Other model releases though, would be nice. You are right. I'm hopeful the company continues to pursue new technology and innovation. I suppose we have to hope, lest M43 slowly suffocate. Without OMDS as competition, Panasonic might make us wait 8 years for a new G9. Unless they just opt to jump completely into FF and give up on M43 entirely. That's what FF enthusiasts have been claiming was happening, again and again. I myself am optimistic. I see the new bodies and lenses being released and have hope for a brighter future. OMDS may be gaining their footing, retooling and doing lots of R&D as they prepare for upcoming releases. The transition to truly new models from what Olympus had in the pipeline is probably pretty intensive. Manufacturing is complicated, especially these days with supply chain issues and silicon production already called for by companies years ahead of time. You have to pre-reserve fab production capacity years in advance. I suppose we can only wait and see, ever hopeful the company comes out with something sooner rather than later.
    As for 3D pop, the 40-150 f/2.8 pro is perhaps my favorite of Oly lenses. It's very sharp, but somehow has that separation that you like, Casey. I'm not sure if you've tried one before. If you didn't live in Canada, I'd lend you mine just to get your thoughts. Despite my spiel above, I do enjoy your videos. You always manage to make me smile, and somehow give me hope for the world of photography/videography in a world where the medium is quickly changing, or dying, depending on how you look at it. Let's just look at it as if it's changing to something ... in transition. That's it!

      OM System is only selling to the shrinking m43 userbase. You said "For cameras with photography as the priority and video as a "we do that a little too," OMDS is doing fairly well. " As they do so little in video they are not getting new users. Sony said that 40% of their sales are to content creators or video users and Sony has 20% of marketshare after Canon. Peter Forsgard, a former Olympus/ OM System ambassador, moved to Fuji as he needed more video features for his business. Problem of OM System is that they are updating their cameras with image processors from other models, which has features that simply is now the bare minimal to catch attention. When the OM-5 was released Chris Nichols and Jordan Drake at DPreview reviewed the OM-5 and concluded that OM System did nothing to adress the shortcomings mentioned when the introduced the EM.5 mark III. Their conclusion is that if you are getting into a system look elsewere. They said at the end of their video that Fuji, Canon and Sony are offering better alternatives at the same pricesegment as OM-5. This is a harsh statement of Chris Nichols, which himself used or uses Olympus/ OM Systems camera.

    Event/Wedding shooting with an OM-1(or presumably G9 II) and, say, a PanaLeica 35-100 is amazingly relaxed and enjoyable compared to slugging a heavier system around. The greater depth of field for the same light level is also a benefit when moving quickly. The 1.2 olympus lenses handle any low light situation, including candlelit ceremonies, with aplomb and provide all the separation you would ever need. And the image quality is lovely.

    So...uhmm... 2 things (3 maybe)
    Your video vlogs with you skating are fucking righteous! It' adds a huge element of excitement - because I AM FEARING FOR YOUR FUCKING LIFE BRO!~!
    I just bought an Evolve GTR (used - i'm not Richie Rich) - and holy moses brother - seeing you skate with NO protective ghear - but its WORSE than that - You are literally wearing MINUS protective gear - SANDALS DUDE?!?! I personally KNOW the joy of having my bigtoenail RIPPED from the bed and lying on the sidewalk TWICE OVER (it wasn't joy by the way - that was sarcasm) The 1st time as a child - it was horrible - 2nd time as a drunk adult - THAT WAS WAY WORSE b'c it didn't some all the way off like it did when i was a kiddo - nope... just jerked out of the bed but still hangin on - So at the hospital - they used ion tmy big toe as a pincushion in an effort to turn it into an "anesthetic toe balloon" hoping i would then be able to withstand the sight of the "medical pliers" attempting to yank the rest of my toenail from my body - GUESS WHAT - AFTER 6 or 7 GOOD YANKS & a bunch of horrifying Cajoling - The doc looks up & says - well I'll just write you a script & you can wait until iit comes off on it's own - (He was CLEARLY ASHAMED he didn't do that in the 1st place_)
    If you're NOT gonna wear a helmet and jeans man..... PLeASE AT LEAST WEAR SHOES!
    i DON'W WANT TO SEE THE VIDEO WITH YOU ALL BANGED UP FROM NOT WEARING GEAR - and then not see you do this anymore - b/c it's a rad direction to go for your channel!
    (End finger waving - pleading)
    2nd thing - (I realy hope you had the patience to make it this far)
    Get Evolve to send you one of their longboards - they're bigger & a little unwieldy when you are going to & from your pad - BUt MAN! On the road it's like a freaking MAGIC CARPET!!!
    I'm serious - and wth the huge rubber tires WAY WAY MORE SAFE!!! (like WAY)
    3rd - I fkn forgot godammit.
    BUT - what's with the cricket fetish??
    You have a cricket tattoo don't you?? The 1st tattoo I ever wanted was jiminy cricket whispering on my ear (you know - because he was pinocchio's conscience)
    But..... it's way too late for that by now - if iu got a tat of jiminy, he'd have to be crumpled in a dejected posture giving me a dirty look & look haggard from tryna work with someone who never listened.
    I'll go

    IMO M4/3 needs to be, if it hasn’t already, be a loss leader. For Panasonic, it’s workable given they invested into FF and have now a closer partnership with Leica, there’s more headroom in FF as a platform and format. The revenues there can be used to “subsidise” m4/3, which can be a gateway (G9ii in S5II body says as much?) while also keeping certain brand equity alive (E.g. GH series).
    Relative to Panasonic, OMS is in between a rock and a hard place. They have sell the m4/3 format, which on paper is losing any obvious advantage over FF that might have been there previously. There’s nothing to prop up the m4/3 line unlike what Panasonic has. As most feared, the new owners also don’t seem to be interested in running and innovating as a camera company. Think they will stick around for years to come but it’d surprising if they ever have a moment again like Olympus did with the EM5.

    It does not give one much confidence in OM systems, to further spend more money on lenses and cameras,
    OM system needs to earn back the trust of micro 4/3 users who spent the hard earned money on the camera system, they need to introduce Mark II to version of the OM-1 with an all new 24 or 26 megapixel that all new image processor that is these three times more powerful than the current image processor inside the current camera I would like to see larger, dials, and joystick on the next professional camera and new telephoto zoom lenses, they also need to take care of those who want smaller cameras, such as the Pen-F for the street photographer and those who shoot other genres of photography they want smaller more discrete camera for shooting pictures in the city and also just take along. Take pictures of family get together,
    I think they should bring back the small pen type camera for those who want a camera in a small package at the same time not forgetting us who want a larger camera that is more appropriate for wildlife, photography and landscape photography, it worries, me that they have not even made some sort of announcement, saying there is new camera and lenses around the corner that we have not forgotten you,
    And yes, I know there is no perfect camera, but it is time for OM systems to show us that they’re still in business making cutting edge, photography tools.

    OM-5 is basically EM-1iii in an E-M5iii form factor. Would’ve bought it but already have the 1iii. I’ve gone in the opposite direction…film. Chasing ever increasing specs is just a way to spend money.

    • @sourcebased
      @sourcebased 10 місяців тому +1

      I have the EM-5iii so I was not tempted. Instead I got OM-1. Both the new and the old film one by now. Sometimes you just want less features and size plus more simplicity, but film is also a great way to spend more money these days. 😂 I dearly wish they would release a new Pen f or even better a new Pen mini (with the small wheel dial on the back and accessory port again, please)! And weatherproof it… But I fear this form factor has already fallen prey to the smartphones.

      @@sourcebased I live in Canada and was definitely interested in the Pen E-P7. But they didn't bring it to North America. Still have a white Pen E-PM2. Nice little camera. I agree, and accessory port was great. Had the VF-4 to go with it. They no longer are selling new Pen cameras here in Canada. PL10 has been discontinued here. I agree with their direction to appeal to wildlife and nature (esp. macro) photographers, but they have to reclaim the size advantage. Congrats on the OM-1 purchases.

      @@derekgpony Cool! I picked up an E-PM1 in white (beautiful!) and a black E-PM2 last year used from eBay, also paired them with VF-4. I love these little cameras and find myself sometimes using them more then the OM-1. Picked up two of them because then I still have one if the other one breaks. I also love my OM-1 but it is just a bit too big, obstrusive and complicated at times. Of course it is so much better IQ wise especially in low light, but the older cameras can produce good images too. VF-4 is simply great! Bigger view than with the E-m5. I am tempted to add an E-PL6 to my collection sooner or later, as it still had the port as well. Preferably in white!

    While I hear you, they offer a lot in photography. The weather proofing, pro capture and smaller image size makes it a great camera for a lot of people. They also have lots of features that make it easy to shoot like bird tracking and many other special features you can’t find on other cameras. I agree with the OM-5… not really sure what is up with that but generally I always go back. I recently got a Fuji xt-30ii and while I like it for walking around, when we went on vacation I went back to my OM-1. No regrets. 🤷🏼‍♀️

    Part of the problem with photography today is that the market expects new product all the time. Look at Nikon and Canon moving to ML, now you need new cameras, lenses etc and then every 2 yrs new bodies that are still catching up with what was already build into the OM-1 and even the EM1m3 and EM1x. OM keep releasing firmware upgrades, Canon does very little and Sony? Nikon has done well with the Z9 with firmware updates. So why do you need a new 300 f4? or a new 12-40 f2.8? the G9ii has now caught up with the OM-1 after 2 yrs, now people want to jump ship to Panasonic, because the video might be better.. maybe it is time like in the early DSLR and Film days to take pictures and improve their skill using what technology offer that is in any case much better than what 99% of people would ever need. But as this channel also clearly show, my affiliate links when you buy new equipment, new stuff means new sales, mean more income for the channel..

    For all the complaining about the OM-5, I'm convinced that if it had used USB-C vice USB 2.0, there would be almost no complaints. Besides the USB issue, it's a great camera. Yes more photo-centric than video.
    The f/4 lenses are all weather-sealed with great optics, for outdoor / environmental. Not really meant for high background blur photos or video.
    The 12mm f/2 and the Panasonic 9mm f/1.7 are probably much better video choices.
    Yes, newer with more features may be better, but at the same time, companies like Sony deliver seemingly new cameras that are just crippled versions of previous tech. Nothing really ground-breaking in quite a long time.

Know how many times I sent my Olympus gear in over 18 years? Never. Zero. Not once. My OM-1 build is superior in every way to the Sony. The sony body just feels cheap. Love the results I get for portraits but other than that I use my OM-1. With the 1.5 software it seems they fixed everything I bitched about. As far as lenses the Olympus lenses may be heavier but again. Built better, and still smaller and cheaper then their equal in FF. I am/was an Olympus fan, but now, if it weren't for the new Panasonic releases, I would have abandoned the system. I have the OM-1, OM-5 and even the brand new TG-7, and although they are all great, I have not felt confident that OMDS will continue to develop their products, provide satisfactory FW Updates and innovative new products. So far, and with few exceptions, they seem to be reheating cold coffee! The OM-5, TG-7 and LS-P5 are NOT at all innovative and that's a shame!! I continue to have a ray of hope that at this moment they are still taking advantage of the stocks they inherited to make cash, but that at some point they will innovate again. But it's not what it seems! On the other hand, the new G9ii rekindles hopes for the MFT system. It looks like an excellent camera that raises the expectation of seeing a GX10, a new GM and even a GH7. It all depends on new sensors!! Particularly I would like to see, in addition to the Lumix described above, new OM Cameras, such as the OM-1X (24mp BSI stacked Sensor capable of 4K 120 and 5.7k 60 Open Gate), OM-3 (OM-5 in Metal Body and OM -1 Sensor and Menu) and Pen Fii. I had a G7 for years, and it was so small and light, with high-end features for the time. The G7 was the G9 of its time. So it seems the compactness and lightness with high-end features is possible, or at least it once was. Perhaps trying to make it the best of everything means you have to pack in more and more? When they made one model line for photography and another for video, it meant they could focus them more directly. Not that the GH line has ever been that small. I do wonder if Panasonic will release any smaller bodies once the G9ii has been out for a while.
