- In students of product design episode 8 I cover putting together an interview design portfolio and an Internet portfolio for a graduate.
When I graduated many moons ago, Internet portfolios were in their infancy and things were clearer. You sent a company your CV with a cover letter and a teaser which was a group of nice images of your designs, if they liked you, they invited you in for an interview and you showed them a paper version of your portfolio. These days the whole process is more complicated, to interview you can take a paper based portfolio, a laptop, tablet, memory stick, you can use a host of different presentation software or log on to the Internet and go to a portfolio hosting site. I think it's become a bit confusing, especially for a graduate.
The number one most important thing you can do for your portfolio, is create brilliant work to go in it. There's a reason for putting so much effort in to your projects, good work stands out. Everything you then do in your portfolio is window dressing to show your work off in the best possible way. So in episode 8 I use a demonstration project and show how I would prepare it for my portfolio, covering tips and tricks to best tell the story and maintain the flow of the story through the whole project.
In a product design portfolio you show what you've done, but it demonstrates to an employer what you could do for them, your potential. I see lots of portfolios put together from the designers point of view, not the employers. You need change your mindset and think like an employer to show the interviewer what they need to see to make the decision you want them to make (hire you).
I see lots of student portfolios full of basic mistakes. They don't flow well, they contain images that show poor decision making, images that are not juicy enough or don't set the scene well and portfolios where it's confusing what job the student is applying for, because they show a mixture of design work and art work or paintings. Some employers may like to see what else you can do, but there is also a danger that it can look like you haven't done much design work so had to pad out your online portfolio with paintings. if you don't have enough design projects, create some personal projects, do more design sketches, make physical or CAD models. If you also want to pursue a fine art career, create a separate portfolio that shows your art on a hosting site for artists. Unless you're going for a multidisciplinary position, If you try and make your portfolio do a bit of everything, it could end up not working brilliantly for anything.
It's just advice, so please take away the things that you think are relevant to you and leave the rest behind.

I'm in high school during VCE Visual Communication and Design and I'm aiming for a bachelor of Industrial Design but also like doing architecture and I'm not sure which one to go for in University :/
Love these videos btw, they've been a great help and have given me really useful tips for my designs.
for the most part, pick one that feels right to you and just run with it and work hard on it, then you will know if it's right for you. if not, just change directions, simple as that. I know because I was in the same boat as you when i was in highschool, torn between ID and architecture. now im studying Industrial Design at Monash and I'm loving it.

Yeah thanks. In the end I chose to pursue Industrial Design, I don't know why but I seem to feel more engaged compared to when I'm designing a structure and also I just like doing it more. Aiming to get into a ID course in Swinburne Uni. It's gonna be fun.

Great series! I've been considering Industrial design for a few weeks now for my major. I've been looking around on the internet and getting a feel for the the pros and cons of the degree. Could you please give me you personal opinion on the down sides and benefits of becoming and industrial designer. And when you graduate bachelors/masters is it easy to get into a company with decent benefits and a 9 to 5 work day or is it more like you a free lancer searching for new jobs every other month. Thank you again so much for sharing these awesome videos, it definitely gave me a helpful incite!
Hey Gary, it depends on where your passions lie, if you like creating, drawing, making etc, then this is a good career. The pros are you get to work on some fantastically interesting problems, to design something that could end up in many people's homes, to solve real problems and/or design devices that save lives. If you're lucky and good briefs come your way it is a very rewarding job where you can make a positive difference. The cons for me are as a designer you don't get to do the good bits all the time, there's also a lot of planning, meetings, committees, fighting for your ideas, negotiation with clients etc. I'm not going to lie, it isn't easy (certainly wasn't for me) to get a career in design in an in house position (what job that is popular is easy to get into?), but there are positions out there, I see them advertised all the time. Product Design is always linked to manufacturing, so when markets are strong there is a lot of work available, in a recession, when companies are not developing as much new product, there is less, but if you have trained as an industrial designer, you are fairly adaptable, so can apply your skills and more importantly approach/problem solving methodologies to pretty much anything. Does the process of the job portfolio also apply to that for the university? If no? Could you give me some tips or even a seperate video?

Sadly I've already finished my university application portfolio but found myself agreeing and noticing that I had done a lot of the things you've mentioned, some will hopefully come in handy when I go into industry. It's also nice to see we share the same taste in music and watches (Braun is the best :). Btw I've been lucky to get three Unconditional offers and having an interview with Central StMartins on Tuesday :)

Great video man, i really like what you do... I just wanted to ask you: Do you really put everything togheter in Photoshop? That's extremely inefficient, InDesign was created for that kind of work.

Can you try to make a cam slider that uses magnets? The magnets push up somehow and make it hover mid air having no friction. It would be awesome if you can make one. I was challenged to make one and failed.
Hi Eric, you're talking about something like mag lev, which will be very difficult to do. I'd be tempted to mount a camera on a mini hovercraft before trying mag lev, but it would be noisy. Keeping it as simple as possible is often the best way as there's always less to go wrong. PT

Hello PT. I love you're videos, they are very helpful and one of the best video series on UA-cam. Things are very well explained. Thank you very much for being our inspiration. Could you please help me with a question. I'm a sculptor but was working on a design project (with one more guy) for a company lately, they liked our design so much that they asked us if we were interested and could design furniture's for them. As we were affirmative, the asked us to send a proposal. As i'm a sculptor I have no idea about what exactly they are asking in a proposal, could you please tell me what exactly should I send? Please help!
Hi Aditya, well done for getting some repeat business. It's very difficult to advise without being part of the whole conversation. It could be that the company is asking for a proposal of what furniture you will design for them, what strategy you have for taking their brand forward or that they are asking you to tell them what your fees will be, or both. You need to go back to the company to ask for clarity. I would rather ask twice and turn up to the meeting with what they expect instead of not asking and turn up with the wrong thing. what are the options for somebody to make physical model or prototypes who is not already working or studying in a design firm and institution respectively?
Hi Sandipan, you could get a job as a model maker/prototyper if you have the skills and can demonstrate these with a strong portfolio. It depends how many opportunities are in your area and how far you are prepared to go. Keep practising and making models and researching techniques. For speed most of industry now uses CAD and rapid prototyping techniques, so experience and access to these will help a lot as well. PT
How many designs (and page amount) would you recommend in a portfolio.
+Karl Martin it depends on your projects and if we're talking interview portfolio or internet portfolio. You'll have more for your final end of year university project than one of the smaller shorter projects. I'd say the general agreement is 20-30 pages for between 4-6 projects, but really it's however many you need to tell the story of the project well, whilst keeping it interesting. Hello, I'm planning on doing Product design as a career and I've looked at many different universities that offer the course however the entry requirements requires an A level for a lot least maths and physics then either design technology or art, however I don't do physics or maths since I got both B's for GCSE so I couldn't do them for A level, right now, for A level I'm studying Product design and technology, fine art and applied science btec, will I be able to get into a uni with these and if I have a really good portfolio, will that help? Or do I have to go through a foundation course doing physics or maths?
Hi Lesd3, the decision will come down to the university, contact the admissions department of the university of your choice and ask. I personally think it comes down to the interview and portfolio, but it's not me making the decision :-) They will give you advice on what you need to do. Good luck. PT
