We also hv a squirrel resistant feeder like this one, but also hv 3 other feeders including suet for our Flickers and Woodpeckers, so EVERYONE can eat to their hearts content. The Mourning Doves, Juncos, squirrels and other ground feeding birds get the scraps on the ground. Gotta love Nature/Wildlife!
That's great you're feeding them all! It is such a rewarding and some of them you'll get to know personally - that is rich! BB This feeder I'm trying to give the Painted Buntings a break so they have a special place to go.
You already mention two ways the squirrels have been able to outsmart this feeder to a limited degree. I predict that in a few weeks, they will have both those techniques honed and get all the food they want.
I don't really know why people discourage specific birds from feeding, I think they should all be welcome, but this is understandable because like you said you have another feeder for the jays. Great footage : )
@@jademoon5996 Right, BJs are not only hogs, but bully birds, driving off the others, even 2-3 ganging up on the much larger Pileated Woodpeckers to intimidate and drive them off. They're beautiful but deserve little sympathy.
It's currently 8 degrees and windy where I am. No one is excluded from my feeder and suet cake holder. I make extra pancakes and popcorn just to put outside.
Do you think this would work with shelled peanuts? If so, this is just what I am looking for to exclude only the blue jays, which I've learned are scatter horders like squirrels. They cram as much food into their crop as possible and then go hide it. I'm not sure they ever find most of it again. Thanks.
This feeder should work with shelled peanuts. I've seen jays cram 20 shelled peanut halves into their crop at once. Check out: ua-cam.com/video/mMp8yEuvHOQ/v-deo.html . You can adjust the weight to limit jays. BB
Have a very similar feeder but the squirrels (or raccoons) have figured out how to get the top off and have broken the lock on the top. I've tried bungee cording the roof on and they end up chewing up the cords.
What keeps my squirrels on the ground, away from the ten feeders above is the super tall 7 foot pole with the extra long and large torpedo baffle AND the cone baffle above that. Now its the beautiful bully Bluejay gang of 5-10,, and a flock of about 30 Starlings when they're in the neighborhood, that have taken over and force me to close down the buffet for a month or two. I get about 28 species of birds and those two tend to drive the rest away and clean out the feeders in a day, starting with the pb suet I make, then mealworms, peanuts, and sunflower seed. Seems impossible.
Doves really can't hang so feeders that require birds to cling on to a hanging feeder work well. The doves will just clean up anything that falls to the ground.
I will tell you a secret to attracting Mourning Doves, if they are within earshot. They love the cooing of Ringneck Doves (domesticated African Collared Doves) and you can find lots of recordings of that on UA-cam. When I play those sounds, the Mourning Doves perch around my deck and fluff and preen.
Lovely video as always. I have 2 question for you. 1. Was this filmed through a window, if so how is it so clear? 2. Are painted bunting in Florida all year round? Have a lovely New Years!🤗🍾🎉
Happy New Years!! I live in Florida and I am new to bird feeding. All birds and squirrels are welcomed at any of my 5 feeders. However, is there a way to discourage the black birds? Would this feeder keep them away? The black birds are aggressive and are bullies, they seem to chase all the other birds away. The only brave bird that stands up to them, is the Red-Belly Woodpecker! Please, if anyone can help, I would appreciate any suggestions.
Are the black birds big Grackles see this video for an example ua-cam.com/video/a3gpU9dA_Gw/v-deo.html if so this feeder can be set to exclude them, they are aggressive but not quite as smart as Jays! Here is a link to the feeder amzn.to/2qbCcQf
MyBackyardBirding..I checked your video out, and Yes, they are Grackles. They always come in and take over all the feeders. Thank you for posting the link to the birdhouse, I am definitely going to get one.
Hi bud thanks for the awesome channel ! Our new fav for our 3 cats 🐯🐱🦁 We are going to give your channel a shoutout in our next video 🐿🐿showing off your camera skills And will drop a link for you Happy New Year 🎊! 👽🇨🇦✨🥂✨🐝💨💨💨
I love your videos but am kind of wondering why anyone would not want Blue Jays at their feeders. I always hear people saying they're bullies, but I don't see that. I never see them chase any birds away except for other Jays. In fact, they will wait their turn when real bullies are hogging the feeder (Grackles, Cowbirds, Starlings, Blackbirds etc.). They also warn other birds when hawks are around. Just an observation...
Blue Jays are on of my favorite birds - we are close friends and they get their own food and lots of it, sometimes by hand, but I want this feeder for the Painted Buntings, Cardinals and Finches.
You're lucky to have such considerate BJ's. Our Ohio Bluejays at our dozen feeders relentlessly fly in and crowd or actually do close flybys, sending all other birds in retreat. They will gang up (2-3) and settle above and either side of the much larger Pileated Woodpecker who eats at the suet feeder, crowding it until it leaves. I actually sit out on the deck with my water hose for an hour on nice mornings just to give my many other birds a chance. The BJ's are smart and know I will spray them and do not attempt to fly in while I sit there. If I ignore them they will ravenously devour all the contents of my 5 suet feeders in a day, then the mealworm feeder, and finally the sunflower seeds. (usually lasts 2-3 days with the other 10-12 species that love the suet I make). Even the Robin is hooked on it and seems to prefer it to worms.
the bluejays here figured out how to hang on to this type of feeder - it's not working. And I don't want them here, they can eat anything but the other birds are food specific - so, no jays ...
That's exactly why we have one. They get plenty to eat -relentlessly robbing the other feeders till empty, repeatedly driving away the other birds and wasting THEIR food but thankfully never mob this one. I'm spending $$ per month to supply our backyard bird sanctuary, offering a buffet of black sunflower seeds, homemade peanut butter/oatmeal suet, meal worms, corn cobs, and raw peanuts in the shell. It's our favorite pastime to watch the birds - till these thieves arrived.- a month ago a gang of these bullies flew in and began to mob & devour all the feeders in a day. Soon I will have to close down for the rest of summer if I can't drive them away. Not sure why the lines were added-probably a Blue Jay did it.

nice bird feeder

If I stopped giving them peanuts and sunflower they would probably be more aggressive after the feeder but they are lazy!
Great video showing real action with birds and squirrels, thanks!
I don't really know why people discourage specific birds from feeding, I think they should all be welcome, but this is understandable because like you said you have another feeder for the jays. Great footage : )
Nobody needs to worry about the Jays, they are spoiled and eating out of my hand :-) I want to give the Buntings - and Cardinals - a break!
BB
I cant afford to feed anything if I dont eliminate the jays. They really are hogs at a buffet.
@@jademoon5996 Right, BJs are not only hogs, but bully birds, driving off the others, even 2-3 ganging up on the much larger Pileated Woodpeckers to intimidate and drive them off. They're beautiful but deserve little sympathy.
we have the same feeder! highly recommended by me and my bro too! fimally something that works!!! great vid thank you!

I believe in lots of food for all - but this one feeder I'm trying to give the little guys a break - buntings are endangered!
I have a large tray feeder, and the doves like to lay in the feeder after eating, which discourages the other birds from visiting.
Same here, Doves like to let their food digest and relax after dinner!

The pole with a squirrel baffle or cone does the trick. They will still get what falls on the ground but the baffle keeps them out of the feeder.
Have a very similar feeder but the squirrels (or raccoons) have figured out how to get the top off and have broken the lock on the top. I've tried bungee cording the roof on and they end up chewing up the cords.
I have considered one of these but i read some reviews about birds getting legs caught. It may not have been this model. Have you ever had an issue?
No I haven't had that problem, but in the last few years I've moved more to using feeders on poles and posts with squirrel baffles. BB
I don't mind the squirrels it's just those damn blue jays!

So true - the Dove's have enough trouble standing on platform feeders :-) - the ground underneath this feeder is a good spot for them!
BB
I wish I had more doves, I have yet to be able to get any film or photography of some!

Happy New Year! Are you going to post a year end wrap-up video?
I should have but ran out of time! Here's to 2018.
Lovely video as always. I have 2 question for you.
1. Was this filmed through a window, if so how is it so clear?
2. Are painted bunting in Florida all year round?
Have a lovely New Years!🤗🍾🎉
Thanks, It was filmed through an open door from about 40 feet. The Buntings are here from October to April then head north to breed.
BB
MyBackyardBirding Ah I see, thank you! Maybe I will be able to see some of the beauties when they come up north!

I don't mind the squirrel, it's the greed bully jays I hate because they don't only eat all the food they also hid it and come back again and again!
Totally agree-greedy ravenous bullies in blue.

❤️ less much ???!!!!!!!
Your obviously new to the Backyard - take some time to look around at the videos and philosophy - especially the squirrel and jay videos.

I don’t like this feeder. Because it repels blue jays.
You can adjust it to let the Blue Jays use it as well - that's the best part it is adjustable! BB

Cause why should other animals be hungry or deserving!!! selective love !!!! Not Nice in my Eyes!!! Even the squirrels deserve some peanuts .
Angela Zeleneski There is no need for this nonsense, if you listen to the video he explains everything.
