The French Connection II is a masterpiece. Never ages. A classic film and Gene Hackman should have received another Oscar for his performance as Popeye Doyle.
IMO this movie is one of those rare sequels that are better than the first, kinda like "..The Empire Strikes Back" , "Hannibal" .."Aliens" .."Godfather II" ..etc
apart from a certain scene in the girl with the dragon tattoo, what they did to popeye in the second film is the hardest sequence i've ever had to watch in a film, because i fucking love popeye doyle more than any other male character in a film (just like lisbeth more than any other female character). but i wouldn't say that diluted the quality of the film. in fact, i think that's the film's ace card because EVERY movie, especially sequels, have to test the main character to the limit.
@spideymayne ..Part 1 is a classic too, but Part II really grew on me over the years and being I am such a big fan of revenge films, part II became one of my favorite films ever, especially the scenes when popeye gets all of the junk out of his system and goes out looking for some payback, gets me fired up everytime :)
After watching, rather, listening to the director's comments (J Frankenheimer I believe) I learned that there are actually two deleted scenes which are curiously NOT available on the boxset DVD. He said he was not able to recover the Traffic jam scene and the scene with Reine Prat, the volleyball girl who we see with him exiting the Hotel and parting ways. Apparently, this "hot" scene (one can only suspect) was in the preview version showed to audiences before the official release. I would like to know if anyone knows about this or (really pushing my luck here) has seen that part. My guess is it was deleted because it did not add anything important to the movie after the screening, but it must have meant something if the director took the time to film it...
DonHarvinder I highly doubt... If Mr Frankenheimer (or the other guy) can't find that footage, we have got one chance in... Maybe some old movie theatre in the USA that has forgotten about the movie reel!
I saw FRENCH CONNECTION II on it's original release, and all you saw of the volleyball gal is what you see on the current DVD. When the movie went "wide" (all movies open wide these days, but not back then.) the scene where Fernando Rey sees Popeye on the beach was CUT, so the volleyball gal was gone as well. Check out FRENCH CONNECTION II "Images"; I found a production still of Hackman and the volleyball gal in bed, in a seedy room, and she is breathtakingly topless. Anyway, Frankenheimer did indeed cut this scene before release, and I know he said it has been lost. I'm sure it has been. I imagine the scene was more lonely and depressing than hot.
Quilted Pine exterior and brief volleyball scene can be seen in the VHS boxset with FC's I & II. But that is it. If the scene is anything like it is described here, Frankenheimer was right in editing it.
MrDoubttfulguest,"alain charnier" has never been arrested, his true name was "jean géant",you know why?,because of political protection, from the future mayor of Marseille in the 80's wich was gaston deferre.
Love part2 very real like part1 Hackmans acting some of his best Only downside was there was no mention of buddy anybody know why Roy S never reprised his role Also one plot hole how did dole ever Learn of Frog 1’s name sure if was never mentioned in part1 loved to have seen a part 3 where he’s back in charge of the narcotics team in New York
@spideymayne ..Yeah I got a copy of Vengeance a few weeks back..I loved "Exiled" and "The Mission" also, Johnny To has taken the place of John Woo as the badass in hong kong IMO

The movie is one of the best films that was ever made.
In this film, Gene Hackman deserved the Academy Award much more than in the first French Connection.
Indeed, i wish this movie was recognized as the first one.
Absolutely agree, especially for the detox scene.
One of the best films ever made.

This was a masterpiece
methinks this sequel is pretty darn good
It's a really good film . Spoiler alert - he gets kidnapped and they get him addicted to heroine . It's brilliantly done .
Good flick. Not as good as the first but still really good. Love the ending.
Better...
Brilliant Trailer!! The following trailer clip from 1975 had more drama and more revenge from "The French Connection 2" in that era. A Brilliant 6!!
both films are great but the payback factor in two is brilliant.
Bring water plenty of water!

"Mayo, mayo, mayo, mayo!!!"
Doyle, come on an, that's a French word and you can't even get it right?
Bernard Fresson was brilliant in this sequel.
Great actor i might not new Popeye but he was true detective GOD BLESS
Excellent.
Two good films
@smizzman thanks for the great comment i loved part 2 equally as part 1
"El Scotchio?"
more watchable than the first
I truly agree , its shows more of Popeye Doyle

He's Popeye the sailer man!
Doyle is bad news, but a good cop!

French Connection II is better than the original. The original just has people walking around mostly and is a bit dull. This has more action.
i would disagree there, both films displayed fantastic acting
@smizzman I/m not so sure about your other examples. Maybe, but this one certainly is a notch better than the first.
WHY I DONT SEE THIS MOVIES ON YOU TUBE?
Miles better than the original in every way.
run, popeye run!
Never seen any of them. Are they any good?? Considering how dated they now look.

Maybe because he was making Jaws.

Excellent sequal, but the 3rd inatallment Popeye Doyle starring Ed O Neil in 1986 wasnt so good.
synch problem there??
@fdsffdd Other way round. FC2's got the better performances. Namely Gene Hackman's. He carries the show.
Alien abductions, or an impression.
i wishd im finnish popye doyle
parlezz vouiss
***** Huh?
Pretty good but far too long! The part where Doyle experiences his drug battle, is rather pointless and in questionable taste.
