Elvis had class but more importantly, he had manners. Always introduced himself as Elvis Presley even though no introduction was necessary.
There's a reason he's called "The King of Rock and Roll", and you just saw a small part of it... There is SO much more.
I love them all. He sings & performs so well. I great entertainer. Polite so polite. Soooooo handsome so much sex appeal. He really had it all.

My mother and her friends saw him perform and met him when he was still a truck driver. She sat on his lap, got a kiss and an autograph.
When my mother married at 18, my grandmother got angry and got rid of everything mom left at her house, which included the autograph. I hate to think what it might have been worth.

My dad was a mega fan. He took us to Graceland EVERY summer. Now I'm a huge fan. 1954-1958 is my favorite era of Elvis. The energy, the style, most especially his rockabilly songs.

Elvis had god-tier level charisma, you hear the phrase, "light up a room" quite often but you can tell Elvis was just like that. Elvis never wrote his own songs, but he recorded over 700 songs in his 21 year career - which is just amazing. Hound Dog was written in 1952 by the legendary songwriting duo of Lieber and Stoller (seriously look them up - they wrote MOST of the 50s and 60s songs that you've ever heard of, absolute legends), and Hound Dog was first recorded in 1952 by Big Mama Thornton - her version is really good too (it's more blues and less pop) and worth checking out and comparing to Elvis' version. That is Scotty Moore on guitar, and I believe Bill Blass (or Black) on bass violin. Iconic musicians. Elvis was a decent rhythm guitar player, but his playing rarely made the recordings.
The best version of Elvis performing 'live' in 1956 was the one where he is dancing and singing with Scotty Moore, Bill Black and DJ Fontana on the Milton Berle show. After that was broadcast, that's when Elvis was criticised by the media and later shows were filmed from the waste up. It's on youtube somewhere.

This was part of a string of TV appearances in 1955 & 1956 that launched rock and roll into the cultural stratosphere, and it's why he's called the King of Rock and Roll... and one of his early fans was a very young John Lennon, who idolized him as a teenager in Liverpool

I love watching these live versions of Elvis back in the early days. Hound Dog is a great song! This was performed on the "Ed Sullivan" show in 1956. Many times you will see the backup quartet singers called "The Jordanaires" with him. They performed with Elvis in live appearances, on his recordings & in his films in the 50's-70's. Elvis' movements were considered scandalous to show on TV. Some shows only filmed him from the waist up.
If you want to see a more loose version of Elvis in this era try the version he he did on the Steve Allen Show, he really pulls out the stops near the end

Hey man, I'm glad I caught this reaction. Yeah, just so many things to say but I liked your observations at the end, and I really liked how he just made sure that he let people know as his very final thing after being totally in that performer mode and now he just comes back to being that humble guy you were talking about any points upwards and he says, may God bless you just like he is blessed me and all of us.
Ed Sullivan looks like Richard Nixon, wow that is hilarious. Well that was a very common look back then you have to understand, but I have to admit, when I was a little kid and this was airing on television about six years before I was born so but Ed Sullivan was still going when I was a little kid and I watched it with my dad and by then it was in color of course but the funny thing is, this was later in 1956, and can you imagine that he was literally 21 years old at this time. That just blows my mind.
But if you ever feel like looking it up on UA-cam, here is an interesting thing, it was on The Ed Sullivan Show that they started filming him only from the waist up during certain bits and performances. And what you see here is really scaled-back well not really but somewhat scaled back from the event on a different television show earlier in that same here which is what set off The Firestorm and started all of that.
Just searched on UA-cam for Elvis Presley doing hound dog on the Milton Berle variety show in earlier 1956, I can't remember if it was June or what but it might have been.
And be careful because there is an abbreviated version of it that misses the whole historic aspect of that iconic performance. And the whole thing isn't very long but if you see one that is 2 minutes or less that's not the one. And here's the deal, in that performance, just like this one in everything on those television shows back then, they don't do the full length version of the song and even then the songs were really short, but his hit on the radio was longer than even that performance that you just saw on The Ed Sullivan Show. They just do abbreviated performances. And that's what was supposed to happen on the Milton Berle show, but just like here, the audience and the ladies and girls were just screaming and they had never practiced it this way ever. Ever.
So they did their short little version of it and then it was supposed to be over, but Elvis has been so unpredictable his entire career, from back in those early days with his early band with Scotty Moore and DJ Fontana and Bill Black and the Jordanaires behind him, but right when it was supposed to be over he just suddenly kept moving and he slowed it down to half speed. And the band was used to watching him because he was so unpredictable both in practice and live, and he did this thing at half Tempo and they immediately started following and adjusted in this allowed him to do those crazy athletic core strength moonwalk type things where he was going up on his tiptoes and so forth, but now because it was half Tempo, then he could just almost turn it more into a burlesque, like the old strip things from the 1920s and 30s, and it was so suggestive for the time, which as you say is absolutely nothing now. Naive as hell it's just it that's what he did because the audience was so into it and the audience just went incredibly crazy when he did that, so even for a very young man, that was instinctually and Incredibly brilliant spontaneous last second decision that he made as a performer. To just totally own the freaking situation.
That performance in early 1956 on the Milton Berle variety show, also in black-and-white of course, is what set off The Firestorm, and there was an incredible racist backlash. It was really horrible. And they were throwing the n-word at him and talking about how he was corrupting White Society with his n word behavior, and there was a huge push to try to get his records pulled from the radio stations and from the jukeboxes. I think that's probably difficult to understand now but that's the way it was back then, and like I say, I came along not long after that and when I was a young kid in the sixties, it was still a lot that way, even in my own neighborhood. And I mean you watched dr. Martin Luther King get assassinated and all of that man. Elvis didn't care. And there's an old black-and-white telephone interview that's pretty fascinating after that event that caused this huge backlash and they started filming him from the waist up when they thought he would do those moves, and in fact he had a gig in Florida where it was so conservative at the time and this judge actually issued an order that if Elvis did anything with his hips, he would be arrested on the spot.
He was so frustrated by this but in the end, he's Elvis. Even though he thought about canceling the gig because he was so pissed, he didn't and when he went out there he did not swivel his hips at all or do any of that crazy moonwalk rubber legged stuff that he was doing back then, but just like in this video that you just reacted too, you saw it, only has to do is smart at the audience, or roll his eyes, or play with them a little too much, act like he's going to do something and then stop and make it awkward enough to draw pension and yet they always loved it. So what he did was he used his index finger or maybe hold on, no I think it was his pinky finger and he would hold it up and he would swiveled around at the points where he ignore Mele swivel his hips and do his dance moves that were suggestive for the time, and he would do that literally with his pinky and the girls in the women in the audience in general just went crazy with every movement of his pinky finger.
That just blows my mind how incredible that is and what an incredible big middle finger to the races and the establishment and the fans loved it. That guy was so brilliant even when he was barely out of his teenage years!

I’m 61 so this was six years and some change before I was born. I’ve seen footage of him singing but I guess mostly I was seeing what we would call music videos today. I don’t remember seeing him in a live performance where he was so playful with the audience. It was fun to watch and you can see why he was so well loved.

I can't recall the exact details of a story where he purchased Teddy Roosevelts yacht and then gave it to a charity to auction off!!! Maybe some of the subs can expand on this! When he first started performing and the girls were screaming, he asked why and when told it was because of the way he moved onstage, he was surprised because he was just moving to let out his energy; he had no idea that he was even moving like that at first. Guess he got used to it. Lol Also, yes, in January 1957 after these performances in 1956, they taped him from the waist up; not that that stopped the effect he had on women worldwide.
Don't know if you saw the Elvis movie. I was, and still am a super fan from the 50's. Some say his affect on women was overdone in the movie. I can tell you this, when he finished a show he literally had to run and jump in the car or the women would tear his clothes off. I have seen it. I am almost 80 and no one can explain it to this day. Men were very jealous and would try to beat him up. One thing I wish you would do is show a short video "Elvis Presley King of Kindness" he was so generous to other and never forgot how he grew up in poverty in the Depression. This song on the Milto Burel tv show is a bit differen. You will injoy very much. Its a tad bit longer ; but great.
Your analysis is spot on. When Elvis did the moves and presented this new way on t.v. it was done in fun and innocence, just to enjoy oneself. Today its all about trying to shock and be vulgar as possible. Totally disgusting and sick. We just an example the other night which i only saw "highlights" where they were worshipping the devil now, no longer hiding it with secret hand signs but wearing customs in red with horns.
