Back when I couldn't afford a game console, I had a thick book about playstation games that I dreamed I would one day play. "One" was one that always sounded so cool, and it's great to see it actually played out.
I got this game for Christmas as a kid and played it a ton. No one ever talks about it! Thanks for the memories.
You missed the cool mechanic of dashing. Comes in really handy on the first level. He runs through stuff and blows it up leaving a speed trail. It's a very powerful move.
Loved this game back in the day. This and Apocalypse really stratched my itch for a Contra 3D back on the PS1
Visual Concepts is the team that used to be owned by SEGA and are now under 2K. They made the 2K Sports Dreamcast games and now just do NBA2K under 2K.
Would've been nice if they made a Sequel for PS2, and called it "TWO", then release part 3 for the PS3 as "THREE"......and on PS4 the next one would be "Four".....and they'd announce "Five" for the PS5 during the Game Awards.
I felt my bum hole give you a sympathetic clench when you kept almost falling around the 15 min mark
lmao! I should have waited to post that until a little later, because the mini falling montage right after was 'chef's kiss'👌
They are after Mr. One cause he stole the last gusher, and they can't make any more. The gusher in the lower right corner.
Visual Concepts made one Madden game in the 90s... then at some point Sega bought them and they made the excellent NFL 2K and NBA 2K games... and still make NBA 2K up to this very day. They also made Clayfighter if I recall, lol... and really obscure games like Floigan Brothers and Ooga Booga.
Matt is really going through the "Weird, random used PS1 games I found at Gamestop" arc of my life.
I got this game randomly from a bunch of games I bought used at Gamestop and I honestly loved it. Fast paced action, bloe up everything, and you felt invincible as long as you could take out the enemies before they hit you.
Btw Matt, the rage meter is also your health. When you get hit it takes a small chunk of your rage away, and if you're hit enough times while in the green it takes away chunks of the little jewel and you die. Also, for that level 2 boss you have to shoot the missiles before they hit the ship you're on
"Thrill-House!"
This is definitely One of Those Games I always saw on the shelf at Electronics Boutique but never actually tried.
Bro, I got this game from blockbuster, as a preteen, and the opening senses have been burned in my memory. " I made a mistake." I still quote that in a cool Raspy voice. Till this day
Kudos to everyone trying to get him to play this 🎉
Visual Concepts are now the NBA 2K and WWE 2K guys. I believe this was one (heh) of their very last games before being bought by Sega outright to develop for the Dreamcast
matt you're my fav youtuber and have been for awhile. if you want the greatest opening FMV sequence ever...PLEASE PLAY OMEGA BOOST. YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT! i even bought the opening bands album (which is awesome).
Overthinking the health/damage model. Just kill, you get health *and* more dakka. Area Man Literally Too Angry To Die
Neo Contra would be awesome!!!! Remember animal contra? 🤣
Dude, not enough people talk about Neo Contra!
I remember this game. The level of action in it was pretty impressive for the time.
This was one of my favorite games on PS1 growing up thank you for bringing back great memories
Loved One, despite all my rage. Always preferred it to Apocalypse.
I was actually gasping out loud during the platforming. We appreciate your suffering to bring us content. lol Game's so bombastic it would make Contra blush. I'd want to give it a try myself if it wasn't 80% bad platforming.
Damn reminds me of Expendable but more frustrating, i would have loved this back in the day.
Always thought One was the best 3d Contra attempt ever made.
I always get this and Apocalypse Bruce Willis game mixed up,
And I think that game had pretty decent in-game fmv footage billboards,
and only a few ps1 games does it.
But I think those fmvs billboard quality look like GBA or the Video Now quality,
that why it worked. maybe running in 8frames and 16 colors and 80p?
That fmv on the billboards blew my mind the first time I played "Apocalypse"
Great game!
@@razumijinatreides4691
Yeah was pretty cool, I think only other ps1 game that also did that was
Syndicate wars? and there's Gex 3 on the N64 also got in-game fmv on a small monitor that was impressive,
the PS1 port only the basic normal FMV videos.
since you mentioned it, you should totally play c-12: final resistance (the game you said you mixed this one up with). it's not on the same high-octane action level as this or apocalypse (with bruce willis)™ but is a slower-paced, more methodical third person shooter with a proper behind-the-back camera and melee combat thrown into the mix. pretty cool game for its time though.
My memories playing One back in the day was me renting it from Blockbuster for 3 days and never getting past the collapsing bridge segment ;_;
This is where I would usually say that this game looks like one of those video games the kids are playing in TV shows, but the amount of explosions would be too distracting.
I loved playing this demo so many times!
i quite liked the vibe of this as a teen. one of the many times a demo sold me.
also this... Wild 9... the odds of Matt eventually playing MDK have gone up recently!
One man looks like a rejected Mortal Kombat character.
Awesome! More PSX goodness from the McMuscleman!
By the way, since I know you're always on the lookout for more obscure PlayStation jank, Matt, have you tried Shaolin on the PlayStation 1? I did the obligatory search on your channels and you haven't played it on video at least.
I'm not sure if it was even released in US and Canada but there is an English EU version. It's a mix between a 3D fighter and an RPG, and it's basically the story mode from MK: Deception. I thought I knew my way around PSX fighters but I had never heard of it before a few years ago. Might be worth a look.
Thanks for all the great greasy content!
SHAOLIN! I've always wanted to play that one! I had a magazine with a review and the screenshoots looked awesome.
It had an rpg mode and multiplayer up to 8 players.
Now I'm gonna to play it on my emul... official Playstation System!
This looks like it would be fun but the camera perspectives would be annoying.
Although, speaking of the camera and the Apocalypse comparisons, some of the camera angles used remind me of Neversoft's Spider-Man which even has that level where you're being chased by a helicopter with explosions everywhere elemayo.
I played this at my buddy's one time. The color changing thing in the corner is your power. The more you kill the stronger you become, the more damage you take from enemies takes away the power.
The controls are the enemy though. I couldn't even make it as far as you did in stage 2
I love this game, i wish Matt did a full playthrou maybe.
Got this.game when I was like 8 as one of my first PS games...
All I remember is it going "I made a mistake" and my stepdad going "yup this is definitely your game!" 💀
And never being able to get past the first level....
Core memory unlocked, thanks? 😂
Is it not a barcode? I still think it's a barcode.
"Why so hard?, right off the start"
- Matt McMuscles
One, ohhh One. The only way is One.
Bring back FMV cutscenes! My personal favourites were always the Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight ones (off the charts with cheese), or the Command and Conquer ones.
Definitely remember this fondly as a good weekend rental game
I'm suddenly remembering a game called PO'd (about a chef fighting aliens or something), maybe play that if you haven't? And for some reason World of Warcraft is the "browse game" option below the video.
Man, I love this game! I wanted to own it so badly ever since I saw the ad in a magazine. To me, it was the real successor to contra. Non stop action!
I'd love to see you play C-12: Final Resistance. Pretty late era PS1 game (2001). I only got it after I got my PS2, but I played the hell out of it and always thought the visuals were really good for a PS1 game.
You should play and explain Ehrgeiz (sc?) A super fun oldy game.
One is a game when you combine both Mega Man and Contra. With a dash of edgy and gritty future elements to it.
Honestly, this is a banger. I had a blast with this game, along with Apocalypse. Amusingly, Bruce Willis was supposed to be your partner in Apocalypse. However, the AI was overly greedy, and stole your resources, even if he didn't need healing or ammo. Supposedly they just couldn't nail the issue down. Rather than cut Willis from the game, and waste the money, they moved out the player character to the trash and put Willis as the action hero. (sorry if I repeated anything you repeated when you played Apocalpse)
Thanks!
I wish nightdive would remastered this beloved cult classic.
This game was extremely difficult. The camera perspectives of that game made platforming hard. Platforms fall, events that caused instant death, like the timer in the dream level, or the giant leeches that would destroy the glass in the under water labs... And then even with cheats on the game was extremely hard to beat. The last boss heals every time he hits you. I think some of the ideas of that game were cool, but it was just way too hard.
EDIT: Lawd, you didn't even get passed level 2. But for real that game is so hard. It only gets harder from there.
Beat this game growing up and enjoyed thoroughly
i like the level complete jingle it feels like they just hit random notes
Loved this
10/10 game. Fondest PS1 memories.
aahh the good old days, when having an impossible jump with a wonky camera angle counts a "hard" level design.
One? More like... One More Time Falling into a Pit, AKA OMTFP! XD
This is the exact Ps1 game I remember playing as a kid and have been looking for😂😂I thought it wasn't real tbh hahahahahaha
This game rules. My biggest memory of it though was renting it, playing it a bunch, returning it, and renting it again years later only to realize I had stopped 15 minutes before the end of the game. Whoops.
Underrated genre of games, this kind and 3D rail shooters like Sin & Punishment/Kid Icarus are awesome, a shame that they are both complicated to make and not that "worth it" because they always end up too short, there is a reason Treasure almost doesn't exist anymore unfortunately.
Treasure's downfall has nothing to do with 3D Rail Shooters though, but the spectacular failure of Geist Crusher.
@@flophouseplays Yeah true, I forgot how hard they were pushing that franchise, only for it to do poorly. But I think the point still stands that the genre sadly doesn't sell particularly well, with maybe some exceptions.
Yeah i always mix this up with the bruce willis game lol
I thought it was a barcode as well
17:22 Terminapeor
Has Mat ever played Terminator 3: The Redemption? That games a certified banger imo.
It's like a prequel to the MegaMan cover
Bonestorm this isn't
Yes, Super Saiyan 4 is the greatest transformation ever!
I can actually explain something the game kind of explains but doesn't really: That pulsating Orb IS YOUR HEALTH AND RAGE.
It literally just changes color based on destruction (Killing and Blowing shit up yourself) If at Green, you are actually in your most vulnerable state as your gun isn't fast firing and a few good shots WILL KILL YOU. It just doesn't come up as much because the fucking PLATFORMING (Which is just SUCH BULLSHIT) will kill you so much more than the enemies EVER WILL.
Honestly, it looks cool af for a ps1 game. I wonder why I've never heard of it.
Similar very obscure game for ps1 published by Midway is called Assault Retribution.
Youll have a laugh at that one.
Rented this back in the day!
I had fond memories of this game and always mistake this game with Bruce Willis Apocalypse (and vice versa), enjoyed this game on ps1, nostalgic
Matt: I thought it was a barcode
Me:..... it's not!?!? 😳
THRILLHO
Hi, Matt ! Since we're talking about crazy space games, you could play Blasto for the PS1. I can assure you its a blast !
This game is a celebration of excess
I remember buying this game at toys r us cause it was cheap. Wayyyy hard I never beat it without cheats. I don’t think you can even save
I loved this game but I played it on easy and had a terribly tough time.
Then I found out you needed to do it on normal or hard to get the best ending.
Yeah....
Yeah I said fuck that.
He really should try out Slave Zero for Dreamcast. Same energy
So...is this game ONE of the jankiest games you have ever played on the PlayStation ONE? 😉
I bought this game because Protonjon played it.
Yo this crazy I've been playing this game for the last few days myself and 20 plus years later I still fucking suck at it
God I played this so much as a kid cause my dad bought it.
The more things you destroy, the more powerful Mr One gets i.e. more health and stronger gun, blue is strongest (upto rage mode max)
Please review Shattered Soldier, not only is it the best 3D Contra game, it's just one of the best Contras all around. Akira Yamaoka composed the score for fuck's sake!
Damn i miss this game!
I was just testing this last week, damn I got killed a LOT!
This looks like Smash TV
I'm both hoping and dreading that you'll make a TWO joke before the video ends.
Never heard of this game, looks cool though 👍
Don't you hate these games that start with a slow, boring tutorial level? 😁 This game looks really awesome. I'm sorry I missed out on it back in the day.
McThrill
Hmm, the only life measure is rage, I can't respect that.
Playing a game called “One” , and we get no Metallica references ?!?!
They should just call this game ugh considering how many times we hear it
I thought Visual Concepts did NBA 2K now
And the WWE 2K games.
Sorry, I think I was confusing them with EA Tiburon or something.
@@flophouseplaysI believe you were correct the first time, Matt. They did make the SNES versions of Madden 94 and 95 (and Clayfighters). As you know they later moved on to be the main developers on basically all the 2K sports titles including eventually WWE.
Speaking of which, I don't know if I've ever seen a bigger jump in quality and reception than what VC did between WWE 2K20 and WWE 2K22.
A 3D Contra game better than the PS1 3D Contra game.
0:58 Dude that's PS1 WTF are you talking about
OHHHHHHHHH
I owned this and hated it. Even with cheats, this game was near impossible
