Ornette Coleman - Buddha Blues

- This appears to be Coleman's only recorded use of the suona, a kind of wooden oboe with a distinctive loud and high-pitched sound. An important folk instrument in northern China, it is occasionally still used to accompany weddings and funerals, as part of wind-and-percussion ensembles known as chuida or guchui. In Taiwan, it forms an essential element of the ritual music that accompanies Daoist performances of both auspicious and inauspicious rites, i.e., those for both the living and the dead. The suona has a conical wooden body, similar to that of the European oboe, but uses a tubular brass or copper bocal to which a small double reed is affixed, and possesses a detachable metal bell at its end. The instrument is made in several sizes. Since the mid-20th century, "modernized" versions of the suona have been developed in China; such instruments have keys similar to those of the European oboe, to allow for the playing of chromatic notes and equal tempered tuning (both of which are difficult to execute on the traditional suona).
The suona doesn't appear on any of Coleman's official releases, and thus we have to turn to a single track from a bootleg collection of live performances, recorded in Italy in 1968, initially released on LP as 'The Unprecedented Music of Ornette Coleman' (with sleeve design by Japanese free saxophonist Kaoru Abe), and subsequently on CD as 'The Love Revolution'. Given that Coleman had started to employ trumpet and violin alongside his more familiar alto sax during the mid-60s , it seems that his use of the suona came from a similar spirit: the desire to achieve a freshness in his playing, to utilise an instrument on which his fingers would not automatically go to familiar patterns and licks, and on which he could create new sounds and textures. It's interesting to note too that, around this time, Don Cherry was beginning his 'world music' explorations, and perhaps Ornette's use of a Chinese instrument was part of the same spirit . (There is a photograph of Albert Ayler playing a similar double-reed instrument during the late 60s, though he seems not to have recorded on it.)
On the bootleg, the instrument is credited as a 'shanai' (the latter due to its similarity to the Indian shehnai, another double-(in fact, quadruple-)reed instrument which had been played by Yusef Lateef, and had also made an appearance on the Rolling Stones' 'Street Fighting Man'); Coleman apparently bought it in a shop in Chinatown. He also, reportedly, gave one to Don Van Vliet (aka Captain Beefheart), and its distinctive nasal twang can be heard on Vliet's 'Mirror Man' sessions, as well as on a number of records by Coleman collaborator Dewey Redman, where it is described as a 'musette' (e.g. • Video ).
Coleman is accompanied on the 13-minute-long performance of 'Buddha Blues' by the bassists Charlie Haden (who provides a more up-front, supporting role) and David Izenzon (who takes on a more free-floating, unpredictable, colouristic function); on drums is Ed Blackwell, digging into his New Orleans heritage to provide a funky backdrop for the leader's slurring stream-of-consciousness. It's a fine performance, and an provides an intriguing glimpse of another facet to Coleman's artistry.

When I was a young man, I was one of those jazz purists who didn’t like what Ornette was making, but many years later and listening to more of his music, I realized I was wrong.
The more I listen to Ornette Coleman, the more I appreciate him and his genius.
Rest In Peace Ornette Coleman 🙏🏾
i`m a jazz purist too, in the sense, but i think that such artists as ornette, cecil taylor, don cherry, etch are pure jazz
yep. i was the opposite. thought all jazz besides ornette was trite (I was coming from metal -> john zorn -> ornette). ken burns of all people really framed things for me and once i got over that little initial hiccup ....well, it's a gift of endless depth, aint it?
For me this isn't offputting for its harsh tone or monotony. Its expressive and just great. Love hearing Ornette explore that oboe thing and Ed march right through everything.
It's spiritual. Transcends time and space. Pure light. A ray of beauty. The beat is pretty badass, too.
Listen dear They playing our tune.
Said Hawk to Getz!
seeing your thorough description, i figured you were someone who likes playlists as well. i was right. thank you so much for keeping them public. looks like some deep rabbit holes to drop down into! appreciated

I love Trout Mask Replica..
If the devil was to compose his own music. This is it man. I don't think I am going to be able to sleep tonight. I think I feel some blood coming out of one of my ears. This is another level. I don't think I am going to be able to finish listening to the whole thing.
Happy birthday Ornette
E così se n'è andato un'altra icona del jazz.
E' il suono che trasmette le emozioni: O.Coleman

Il a laissé une trace importante dans un jazz moderne
amorphously great!! :)
Dissonance is all relative. People shouldn't be so offended or threatened by it. One person's noise is beauty to another person's ears.
The wider ranger of genres of music, etc one listens to will enhance their perspective.
I think I get why people have problems with it. Mainstream feeds you with "sugar" all time and than suddenly getting the whole range of taste is "too much", so they close up and cry. I myself started leaving the boundries of producing"normal" music after 40 years and though I felt the fascination almost right from the beginning (otherwise I wouldnt have continued) it took me 3-4 years to overcome the "this is funny - what am I doing here - am I getting crazy now?" to finally accept the universal freedom that comes with it. Then you hear people freaking out like "you cant doooooo that, its against the "rules" of ... " and you realise its the same mind jail like in so many other areas (dresscode, behaviour, furniture, gardens, actually nearly everywhere ... we get used to the "normal" things and lose openes to the endless space of possibilities. Like someone demanding a highway through the jungle screaming "I cant walk here - this should be forbidden!"
I think another mistake people (listeners) make is thinking they have to "understand" whats going on (intelectually, rationally etc.) instead of just letting it work on them and experience how their mind opens up and broadens like with traveling, or other experiences ...
anyways: just my 2 cents
Weird and inspiring
Classic Ornette!!!
This song expels my anger and my hate.. like some wizard shit
yeah this sound is cool!!
For 48 years metal and many other genres have tried to replicate what Ornette Coleman did with a plastic saxophone.
OK OK I know this isn't a saxophone
I WISH I could make sounds like this on a sax...
Just jumped on Discogs. This one is gonna be hard to track down.
Deixa o cara mais vivo que nunca.
Beautiful pra cARAMBA
Excelente!
Because of Ornette's interest and playing with the Master Musicians of Joujouka/Jajouka isn't this more likely to be a Moroccan Ghaita or Rhaita rather than a Suona which is Chinese. The Ghaita or Rhaita is often known as the Arabic Oboe and the Chinese version is called a Suona.
@emilianoturazzi Ornette knew of and had heard the Master Musicians of Joujouka/Jajouka at least a decade before he met them in the early 70s.
There is increasing attention to the amount of nonvideo content or otherwise unhelpful content on UA-cam. There were two stories on the excellent show "On the Media" (available on podcast) about this, including a response by UA-cam guru. As users commented on the show, the presence of incorrect links makes it much harder to find the VIDEOS that one goes onto UA-cam to find. That is what this site is about. No one is stopping anyone from putting music on another site. Also, check out Spotify.
Art has only one meaning: the imitation of nature.
level 5
Wow😍
R.I.P. Ornette...
This song made my dead dogs come out to play.
R.i.p. master
I read your comment before listening to the song...I couldn't stop laughing at the accuracy of your statement
ohhhhhhhhhhhhh yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
0:44 "Excuse me?" *puts out the truth*
RULES!
PLEASE HELP ME. I DONT UNDERSTAND THIS
Listen to loads of Sun Ra. You'll love this in no time.
La musica la puoi studiare, ma è il suono che bisogna sperimentare, per rendere unici i tuoi componimenti, più o meno questo è il pensiero di Coleman O.
Yesssssssssssssssss
I love this amazing Music
Google Johan Capiau,Artpainter
3 people have kept really light a joint

R.I.P.

addio ORNETTE COLEMAN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I dig Ed more here. OC puts up a frantic fight to try and continue a once great innovative exploration voyage.
Geez, ahh...., hmmmn.... I dont know
.
Now how's that for the use of the English language.
But have to wonder about the honesty of Mr. Coleman's playing.
I have been trying to find Ornette Coleman VIDEOS on this website for videos. But there are dozens of entries like this--recordings of published and readily available music. It's difficult to tell what is a video. So, now I don't look for Ornette Coleman videos.
No matter how useful it is to have Mr. Coleman's music (without paying him anything for it), it is bad if such entries overwhelm the purpose of the website--providing videos.
Kindly note that I have responded civilly to your reply.
C'est la barbe !
This guy is a fucking genius.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@kevinherbert i get what you're saying, but i say that if someone has 'musical ears' (i.e. is an improviser/a composer to some degree) and he/she figures out a way to make tones on a given instrument, then he/she may/could say something pertinent/expressive/e.t.c. despite lack of proper technique and/or fluidity on it...
Most uncharted Ornette..destroying and creating...at the same time...that's what I get.
carajo!!!!
Dig.
Stockhausen goes groovy
😀💙🌸🌱
I am trying to find this on iTunes and can not.
What?
At about 10:56 i finally had to stop. I really want to enjoy this, and feel as though i'm somehow musically handicapped because i don't, but it is down right painful to listen to. It is suitable as movie soundtrack music to accompany the 2-3 minute violent fight scene that leaves blood and severed limbs strewn across the gutter.
I totally agree. And ironicall, so did Thelonious Monk, who was himself often hard to listen to....
"At this time the fashion is to bring something to jazz that I reject. They speak of freedom. But one has no right, under pretext of freeing yourself, to be illogical and incoherent by getting rid of structure and simply piling a lot of notes one on top of the other. There’s no beat anymore. You can’t keep time with your foot. I believe that what is happening to jazz with people like Ornette Coleman, for instance, is bad. There’s a new idea that consists in destroying everything and find what’s shocking and unexpected; whereas jazz must first of all tell a story that anyone can understand."
-Thelonious Monk
Perfect. I'm a big Monk fan. This makes sense to me. Thanks.
RWP108
The fact that Thelonious (a very idiosyncratic person himself) also called Ornette crazy is ironic as well.
Thelonious' remarks is in my opinion testament to the revolutionary style of Ornette's music. It's so revolutionary, even Thelonious Monk doesn't like it. That by itself is an honor and a compliment.
What Monk said about Ornette and free jazz in general is exactly what critics said about Monk and bebop in the 1940s.
this is the sound track to alienation and brutal tension. I mean-- yeah-- it's real. But why would I want to go there?
Louise Watts hi. How are you these days?
this is MELANIN at work: dsrk mstter consciousness in chaos=music
You realize that Ornette's combo isn't completely black right? Literally both of the bassists are white guys.
@Fishinpastein xD
supremo
@Zeokoz UA-cam is a site for videos. When people post other material, it makes it harder to find and enjoy the videos. The site is not suitable for every possible purpose that people might want to accomplish on the internet, so I would ask that people use it for posting videos.
I think you're shit out of luck pal. They took down all the chupacabra videos.
goddamn
I'm.. just.. unsure what to make of this. It gives me the tingles, but in a creepy as fuck way. This is the kind of music you'd here as a psychotic murderer approaches you with a knife and a grin on his face.
#MakingMusicIsAProfession
As it should.
@glimmer49
For myself (and others like myself) to discover.
@Martiluk1 thats exactly why the music scene is dying. people getting too lazy to find music without the help of the internet. can't say im not one of those people tho lol
C'est un voyage de folie pas ordinaire
Isn't the western oboe made of wood?
I can't deny the possibility, but I guess Tibetan oboe , for its Asiatic (humid)atmosphere. But instruments are little matter for the GENIUS.;-)
but western oboes have metal keys, suonas don't have keys, only holes.
by the way, most suonas have brass bell like bass clarinet
Actually, UA-cam is concerned at the amount of irrelevant material on the site, which drives away users like me. I understand that you want access to music, but that could happen on a music website. If UA-cam stores any material that anyone finds useful to put out there (my poetry? family photos? data sets?), it will become totally unusable.
I don't think it is close-minded to say that a video website should have only videos so that people can easily find videos. It is a matter of efficiency.
Me too hahaha
This song made my dogs play dead for some reason..
Where is the blues..?
💻💻💻💻
The internet allows us to access a wealth of materials for free. Why not?
Less people dislike this song than agree it sounds like a bee getting raped.
