- I found a Franck Muller Casablanca 6850 online and commuted from Kyoto to Tanashi to go see it in person. In this video, I describe my watch buying experience.
I feel a spiritual connection here. Just stumbled on this video after I finished inquiring about visiting a shop in Nagoya to purchase a black dial red arabic numeral 6850 myself. Thanks for the details of your experience! I guess I can expect not to haggle.
I'd love to know if you found the 6850! Is it the Sahara model?
good on you for not being afraid to walk away. I almost bought a first gen planet ocean in Osaka from a store that was having a closing sale, but the salesperson treated me with disgust and acted so annoyed at all my questions. Even if I saved a few hundred dollars, the watch experience would have ruined the watch and its future memories for me
Haha as much as we say 'price is everything, service don't matter', there's a limit to how far we'd go. In my case it was the reverse
1:37 I know that area of Shinagawa very well - I've been up and down the stairs on Platform 13 and 14 hundreds of times.
3:57 Whoa, that's the very same shop where I got my 2nd Tudor Hydronaut - the one with the black dial, that I had switched out to the mother of pearl dial at RSC.
Gotta love a good and honest watch hunt - and this was one! You win some, you lose some, but it's all about the journey (and some good YT content to boot!). I think you were right to walk. Rakuten prices include tax, so something's off about his calculation. He might have thought you went so far out of your way making reservations, and going all the way there to see it, that you were committed enough to it to suck it up. I'm glad you didn't!
@@watchsymposium Wow you picked up your hydro #2 there? I was wondering how many people make their way out here given the amount of listings they had online. Great point on them holding the price as I told them I was coming from Kyoto. Lesson learned hahaha
Think you did good on holding off on buying the watch. If you go on a watch quest again, nail the price down and discounts with dealer.
Thanks, Im going to find another one in the future - will definitely do those things first!
Hello Oddpout,
I just wanted to say how much I enjoy your videos-they're always a highlight for me! I'm traveling to Japan soon and am considering purchasing a used Tudor Black Bay 58 with box and papers. I've seen prices around $2,900 after tax on Chrono24. Do you think this is a reasonable price, or might I find it cheaper in shops while I'm there?
Thank you, and keep up the fantastic work!
Thanks for the kind words! I think $2900 USD is very reasonable if it's in nearly new condition. You likely won't find much cheaper, especially in Nakano. Go see it and try it in person!
You can grade the video a bit warmer to see how it looks in normal light 😀
Good point, but first impressions had me!
@@oddpout oh no i agree, you did the right thing. but i would be tempted just to see how it feels, how much of a difference it makes.
Watch shopping in Japan is one of my favorite hobbies.
Why dont you start making vlogs about it? We would enjoy it
Its a surreal experience!
I have purchased 9 watches over two trips to japan in the last two years and loved it. I can't wait to go back. Your experience seems out of the ordinary. I would have done the same in your situation.@oddpout
Sometimes walking away from a deal is the best decision. The right deal will more than likely much easier
For sure!
i have that same exact watch. i got it passed from my grandfather after his pass away its a beautiful watch
That's got a beautiful history to it then. Thanks for sharing
Looked like a cool watch, I haven't considered Frank Muller before but that did seem to wear really well.
Makes no sense to me why the price would be higher in person than on chrono-24, I would've also walked away if that was the case.
Yea unfortunately the price was not justified. FM are great watches on the second hand market if you dig the design!
I say save the money on the Franck and get something really special like a 33mm Royal oak or some Tank variant. I may get lucky and pick up a 36mm sub today!
Thanks for sharing the experience
What kind of nato strap is on your tudor? oem or something else? thanks
It is a Bark and Jack NATO from half a decade ago haha
I think you've mentioned that you're travelling with your girl, how did you convince her to follow you around half the trip looking at watches 😅 or is she into it as well
She is an amazing person for following me around like this 😂
Could you make another video after a month of wearing that watch on your wrist?
From my understanding, preowned watches don't get 10% tax free.
The whole country is a pre owned wonderland
Its AMAZING
Sorry it didn't work out for you. Btw, what was the amount the guy keyed into the calculator?
I think it came up just a few bucks more than what was on Chrono - theres always going to be another one !
Sounds surprisingly shady for Japan. Wouldn't have bought it either.
@@manofthehour_ They were polite as usual but definitely wasnt what I expected
the mismatch caseback screw is odd. i probably won't buy it either unless the price was so cheap that youre willing to accept its possibly a frankstein/potentially a replacement dial
Wait why is it an extra 20% when bringing over to Canada?
@@bullrocket1939 Import tax into Canada is ridiculous
How much was it
Your taste will keep changing.
It has over the years but this FM has been on my list for a while 😄
@@oddpout do you think it wears a bit big on you?
@@sensible202 Hmm I do. Gonna continue hitting the gym and hopefully catch up to it
At least you were able to walk out without the devil in yourself said, "you came all the way here, blah, blah, blah...!" There is always the next watch. It's a buyer market. I am in HK and have to control myself for the exact reason you gave about the Canadian customs and taxes add-on (5% customs and ONT 13%) 🤬 . Second-hand watches should be tax-free, IMO.
Oh man, I heard HK has some amazing deals right now. But bringing it into Canada is surely a pain...
