I've seen a few comments mentioning that BDO does have dungeons and fast travel. The game does have Magnus and Atoraxxion, however when mentioning the lack of dungeons and fast travel I was specifically talking about BDO at it's release and early years of development. Atoraxxion and Magnus were both added in 2021 and 2022 respectively, 7 to 8 years after the games release. Apologies for the confusion.
To add onto this, fast travel existed in the game since Valencia release, through Traveller's map. However the item only allow you to warp to the closest Towns within your current region, with 6 hours of cooldown. I can't remember when but around 2017-18, they also added a Taxi service where you can take a Balloon to fly from region to region, which takes like 10 minutes real time.
The dungeons are also VERY different from the kinds of dungeons you find in other MMOs. Magnus is cool and all, but I found my self naturally rarely using it, I use it just if I really need to be in a place instantly and otherwise I prefer letting autopathing do its job and do other stuff while the character rides to where I want; it's not that I'm some kind of a MMO boomer that doesn't accept change but I just got used to no fast travel and it just feels clunky anyway lol
one of the better videos on BDO in 2023! So much of the "outside-of-BDO" MMO-crowd is unable to realize that BDO occupies a niche, and has its own audience of gamers who crave what BDO offers. The very same elements outsiders find repulsive, the fans either don't care about or actually enjoy. I've played many MMOs since 2001. I am frustrated with people who refuse to acknowledge that BDO might have something worthwhile, people who act like BDO players only like it if we are ignorant of what a "real MMO" is. I've long given up trying to persuade friends to try it out, it will only ever be "that weird grinding casino game I play" to them. Oh well.
I gave up trying to persuade friends to play it as well long ago. Most are WoW or FF14 players who haven't tried many other mmos. Out of the ones that tried it, most didn't even last 2 days and never made it to heidel. It's a complicated and different game than they are used to, so I don't begrudge them. In fact I expect them to not stay. It's not the only game like that either, the same thing happens to me with other games I've loved like EVE Online and Warframe.
I started with Eve, moved to FF 14, and now I'm on BDO. I love all three of those, and I can't really say which one I like the most. But they each have their own merits, and I've been addicted to all of them at one point. It's just a matter of perspective, and what I see is that when people say that you don't know real MMOs, it really means that they're afraid to try any other than the one that they like.
You gotta realize that big part of the mmo community are twitch wave riders, they would just move to wherever the hype is or their streamers go, now that bdo gained some popularity again with lotm Asmongold checked it out again, he knows shit about the game, played it and said again its p2w, moved on and the same did all his spergs
the part about suplexing someone into a river after knocking them off their horse. As a zerker i am innocent and would never do that without being provoked, that horse rider kept staring at me and staring is quite rude.
Reason for me is, BDO has so much more depth than any other MMO by a mile. You can PvE and grind and read guides on how to grind with mechanics.. then decide to lifeskill and realize that is so in-depth that it requires all your time. Then you decide to Barter and realize that is its own game, etc. This game has sooo much to offer.
Yep. No other MMO with messy open world pvp. I don't want gear equalized arenas, I don't want scripted battlegrounds. BDO has both insanely satisfying pvp mixed with pve and the conquest node war system where you place a fort anywhere and fight 50v50, making obscure areas nobody goes to become famously horrendous base locations in the middle of a mountain cliff that is outrageously unbalanced to attack. I love unbalanced games. The funniest part of Warframe is the broken combination of cards with exponential multiplicative stacking that lead to boring but OP methods. Nothing is more boring for me than symmetrical maps with balanced gear and MMR matchmaking.
I wasnt expecting such a quality and well thought video from small channel like this. I truly agree its a very niche game thats hit or miss, and there is no alternative to this game so when people burn out they just come back because they cant find an other mmo with superior combat.
The active development on black desert is crazy. You can be gone for 6 months and come back to entirely new in-depth systems. I was gone from late 2021 to now. And I’m just surprised they add voice acting and cutscenes to the entire main story. Let alone all the new catch up systems, area of the map and classes.
BDO is by far the best mmorpg i have ever played. I have played wow, archlord, archeage, dragona online (where i was the guild leader of the strongest guild), 9 dragons, and others.. But BDO is so special.. It has endless content.. great graphics, nice combat system, huge lifeskilling system, great developers (the game is updated every week, and gm's very often chill around the bdo world, chatten with ppl and giving out gm's blessing buffs and such.).. The game is just great. I will never stop playing this game.
Im a BDO Player since 5 Years now. Played 10 years WOW, star wars the old republic, ESO and many more. And i couldnt agree more with you, i never since WOW, felt home in a game again but to this point. I think your Review is the Best ive seen in a long time, calling also the negatives which BDO surely has. But aß youve said yourself, no other Game has this much, indepth content that BDO has. One last Thing, a Game can only be as good as the Company behind it, i think PA did an amazing Job in the last 2 Years to make the Best Experience in this Game since ever. Very good work again mate ( also liked that you put my german Fellow Wakayashi into your Video, enhancing 😂 )
Been a BDO player since launch and have never left it. It simply is the most fun game to play that I've ever played. Why? Beautiful characters, fun, energetic combat, filled with different things to do that I never get bored with the game. I might be bored with one aspect of it, like bartering, but then I just switch to something else within the game.
Not gonna lie, at the start I thought this was gonna be another biased anti-BDO bashing but actually really enjoyed your take on things. BDO is very much that addiction you can't get over, 90% of the people I know that play/played the game, almost all of them have came back to the game in some form, because the dev's listen to the players a decent amount when it comes to quality of life and honestly, it's refreshing. The devs targetting the game to newer players, making it easier to get in game gear and everything worth a lot more speaks volumes for allowing new players to catch up. PA has it's fair share of up's and down's but ultimately, they get it right when it counts. :D
This game is absolutly underrated. It deserves so much more sucess imo. I love bdo. I grind, I chill there, I enjoy the enviroment, though my Pc cant handle remastered. I never got burned out by this game, wich for a grindf heavy mmo is actually impressive.
BDO tends to be the game I always come back to for this reason I think. After playing lost ark for a while I began to miss having a big open world I could look around and feel immersed in. Ill try out WoW and f14 patches and expansions but inevitably get tired of their samey dungeon gameplay loops after a couple months and came back.
Lost Ark had great gameplay but I also agree I felt the game was much less immersive than other mmos, especially bdo. There's something to be said for just being able to pan your camera and look out into the distance, and bdo captures that feeling.
What always brings me back to BDO is that other themepark MMOs are "solved". I've been playing FFXIV since ARR and the content cycle literally has not budged from the formula since release. Every expansion we get a level cap increase, a good story, and a new zone, every x.odd number patch we get 3 dungeons and a 24man raid, every x.even number patch we get 3 dungeons and an 8man raid; for over 7 years. . . BDO has always maintained relevancy regardless of time spent not played. I'm using the same end-game pieces of gear I got years ago and those are still BiS and because of the near infinite treadmill I always have an upgrade to strive for. That PEN necklace you got 3 years ago on a lucky tap is still BIS today because gear never becomes obsolete in BDO. In FFXIV if I quit playing for 6 months, everything on my character is obsolete and I have to grind weekly lockouts if I want to raid again; and all my bis raid gear I spent a hundred hours earning is useless. BDO also always has something weird and new every time I play. The recent expansion isn't like anything I've seen in an MMO, the new Dekia lantern system coming out this week changes every grind spot. The new crystal and artifact system allows for a ton of diversity and options. BDO just does cool new shit all the time without ever making you feel like your previous accomplishments have become obsolete.
This is something that needs to be watched by all the Lost Ark refugees and Asmon's community instead of trying to make our game change for their taste...
For me personally the combat system (and combat visuals) plus the still amazing graphics plus the unmatched character design and customization options were the main reasons why I started this game. The massive open world and a gearing system that is actually rewarding and doesn't make your gear useless every other patch is what kept me playing the game.
They kept it up for a while, but now there is dungeons and teleporting. Still, it's definitely a game that's just it's own game. I think many people, especially the older ones who play BDO were people who enjoyed games like Star Wars Galaxies. BDO reminds me very much of that game, and I hope one day they'll remake SWG, the private servers are fine, but I miss that huge thriving community.
Ya but the teleporting was done well I think. Like you really gotta earn it with those annoying quests and the 9.5 million per teleport. Plus it’s not just a UI screen, which is what I thought it would be. I really only use it when I NEED to be on the otherside of the map to meet a friend. But with how big the map has gotten since launch, they needed to add a teleport system. Especially with loml
They did! Fast travel was definitely going to be needed if they ever wanted lotml to be viable at all, but in true BDO fashion the Magnus system and the entire quest chain that came with it is just totally wild.
From my perspective, BDO is the game you hate and love at the same time. I started BDO in 2015/16, and while I've tried other MMOs, none have held me as long as BDO. Even though I've rage quit, uninstalled the game a few times, and liquidated my gear, I've always come back to the game and gotten a little further than the previous playthrough. And the progression, loss and everything only BDO can really offer, with no other MMO does one get such a great feeling when progressing and building their empire. That's what keeps me with BDO all the time and I'm incredibly happy to see the way BDO is heading, over the last 2 years (of which I've been actively playing for a year and a half), you can see an incredible shift in a good direction.
I think the reason is clear, as a long time player of BDO: If you get past the first week, you're in. You're going to stick with it. Its combat is SO good, its spread of activities and progression is virtually endless, and it respects your time by never having gear resets. If you had a max level (pen) Ogre Ring necklace in 2019, it's still an endgame item in 2023. No hamster wheel. The issue of the game has always been that first week of learning, but for many years they've pumped out refinements and changes to the new player experience such that it is way less daunting and holds your hand a bit more through the various systems. A new player will end their first season character's season with a GED in Black Desert systems as well as a decent full set of kick-off gear. That used to be months of hurdles, but can now be done in a few days for a new player.
You say it. Today, anything is possible in BDO. Pearl Abyss could add just anything and there is barely any rules to be expected anymore. That is what makes it so exciting, along with the weekly test server updates bringing new systems, adjustments and class tweaks.
When I saw this video yesterday he had 12 suscribers and little amount views. So glad that it got the reach it deserved cause it was a really good analysis imo.
Lol love the title. I agree with your observations, and I'm so happy to see this game doing so well now. I've always loved the game design and aesthetics of bdo, and if it wasn't for irl obligations, I would play it much more frequently - because it is a wonderfully well-made experience for the kind of player who loves sandbox games. It's still an awesome game to play casually, and to come back to every now and then (the way I've been playing it). I'm genuinely impressed how every time I return, it's in a better state than the last time I played. The community has also grown through the years, and has so many friendly and helpful people in it. I hope bdo and the community around it continue to grow! Also wow, I agree with the other commentators about the production of your vid - the quality made me think you were an already established channel. Very strong start, I've no doubt you'll grow your channel rapidly at this rate (if that's something you're interested in doing!).
Only reason why it didnt fully die yet is cuz its filled with people that have insomnia, depression so they grind and grind AND then there are people that spent too much and due to financial reasons, they dont want the game to die, cuz it would mean they spent money on nothing.
not to mention from what i understand, their original publisher contract came to an end not too long ago, so the devs took the monetization and reworked it to not be as scummy. they give a ton of free stuff now, and from what ive seen, you can now be completely free from buying from the cashshop and still compete.
I have more BDO spreadsheets than I do for my household or business... If EVE had BDO's combat, it would be the greatest space game ever made... Pearl Abyss has made investing in playing their games rather rewarding, and the fact that real world endgame gear literally costs thousands to buy on the market make the cash shop basically useless for all but the wealthiest whales...
I played Warthunder and BDO on and off over the years, i keep coming back to them because they have something unique that no competitor can approach to imitate. So even with all the cons you can find to them, and you can find a lot, i just keep resinstalling them
The number one reason why BDO is alive and healthy is because devs actually listen to constructive positive feedback from the player base. The game at launch was a mess worthy of it's toxic reputation but the devs consistently improved their game with each passing year all the way to today where the game's reputation is just untrue on every point people bring. Nowadays is just an incredibly good game with a lot of content although not perfect, mostly because the steep learning curve which tends to deter new players.
What i dont like in other mmorpg is its too easy to grind, quest, casual or no pvp, tab target mouse clicking game, max level in a week or 1 month and etc. 😂
My personal reasons why I like BDO is that it weirdly enough respects your time. I know this sounds strange but while yes the start is though once you got decent gear you have decent gear. You can even take a break of a year or more and once you come back you still have decent gear. Yes the enhancing is a huge cost (No, you don't need to pay real money) and time sink but you technically only have to do it once. Don't like your current class? Just take the gear you just enhanced and put it on the new class you want to play. Leveling new classes is also pretty quick, just do season and you end up at around 59-60 without much time put into it.
As a veteran of the KR Severs and having played EU since release, this is the best take i have yet seen on BDO and explains perfectly well, why i too believe the game will be around for a long time, it just offers a package thats unique and very addicting for a niche of people like me
I love that you mentioned the life skilling when talkign about the unique aspects of BDO. I am obsessed with gathering and alchemy and I just love that bdo allows you to do just that and only that if you want to, while still offering you a varied experience. Most other mmo are all combat all the time, whether it is around story, gridning, raids or pvp and only spare minimal thought for non combat activities.
im returning player from 2019, and played this game again 5 days ago xd the fact that no other MMORPG can replace this game + this game future becoming clear, i would love to spend more time grinding those PEN
You may hate how grindy the game is, you may hate the enhancement system, you may hate the mt's, you may hate the graphical pop-in or how confusing the game is to learn, or even the combat... but you can't hate boobs. On a srs note. I do think not having grind zones in LotM is overall a bad thing and downside in otherwise a decent expansion. Likely it was due to budget constraints, i think, but then, i think PA should make BDO's budget more generous. Perhaps it'll happen considering BDO experiences a kind of renaissance atm, who knows. I also think they could double down on combat system and mob grinding, hone it, but i bet that'll never happen. What imo must happens, is graphical/technical overhaul, to bring image quality aspects of the game up to modern standards, namely pop-in and TAA, considering how important aesthetics are for this game and for immersion of the sandbox open world of BDO in general. And considering large scale PVP is big part of the game, migration to a modern low level api such as Vulkan or DX12 also must happen, for performance reasons. Imo those are completely feasible tasks for a company such as PA and it would do good for the game to prioritize them. Well, also. Triple sub model with value pack, kama and old moon needs to go. These must be merged or something.
Designing and modeling 9 entirely new boss fights with mechanics and having a huge voice acted storyline with cutscenes is massively more budget than releasing a new zone with a few grind spots like Eternal Winter, what are you talking about? You'll notice when they release new grind spots it's always reskinned mobs like Elvia zones. None of the bosses in LoML have re-used assets or animations.
@@Mekose I thought it's quiet obvious what i'am talking about. No grind zones due to budget constraints. And you're wrong about reused content. Eternal Winter grind zones are quiet unique in mechanics, loot and art. And obviously i talk about rather inconsistent quality of the content in LotML, i.e. some of the cut scenes were using screenshots instead of in-game cinematics or art work and art work itself was rather sparce, just a single sketch usually. I can think of only 2 explanations for such a thing. Either they didn't fully give a fuck about their creation OR they were very limited on man hours and budget in general.
very nice video :3 (been playing since eu launch more or less, there are tons of things to add but i think your video sums it up on a base level extremly good for the everyday none bdo player, kudos!)
i kinda miss the old BDO feeling. No fast traveling, money had weight. It was much more realistic than it is today. Flagging up and group fights add sausans. But still its the best allround complete fantasy game u can play.
I think the most important part, even if people like it or not, is the devs. If you look into the mmo news lately, everyone is shitting on blizzard, everyone is shitting on amazon games, everyone is shitting on ncsoft, etc... Most MMO devs are taking shitty decisions that the playerbase dislike. Meanwhile, lately everytime Jaehee Kim, the executive producer of BDO, come out to talk to us, the fans are happy. They are constantly improving the game with quality of life updates thanks to the feedback of the players and adding new content. And BDO updates on a weekly basis, while most MMOs are just dead silent for months. Even talking about BDO as a niche game, which is true, due to increased popularity lately they are also slowly adding stuff that some new players might miss from more popular MMO with their own twists, so basically to me, BDO is slowly but surely becoming the best MMO for all.
This exactly. Plus PA actually listens to their community complaints and fixes things the players are unhappy with. And they give out more free stuff thats actually useful than any other MMO.
PA is an incredible dev team that listens intently to their community about fixes and QoL; however they also have a strong vision for the game and aren't afraid to say no to suggestions that run counter to that vision; huge respect for that.
Been playing for 2 years now, I've been a FFXIV player since early ARR. I was off and on FFXIV because the game gets boring once you've made it to max level a couple of dozen times on multiple different classes, and trust me, I've had every class max level. In ARR once you hit lv50, there was literally NOTHING to do besides trying to get a house from Bots, Crafting, and Relics. I did neither of the above because at the time, Relics was extremely hard to get, and housing has always been an issue with bots. Then HW came into play, same thing, same experience, got to max level, got bored, nothing to do, same as ARR but now we had new Relics which SE made easier to get. Got it within a week and then got bored with the game again and continued to be off and on with it. Then we had Stormblood hit, same as ARR and HW, except NOW we can travel to China and experience Eureka. Eureka was the best thing that has came to FFXIV since I've been playing for ARR to SB during that time. I grinded Eureka for hours and encouraged friends to try it too! But then of course after time, a new Eureka mode came out.... Pagos, and Anemos was a wasteland. Had to join Discords and log on during busy hours just to get a good Anemos train if you had missed it. And then Pagos died, Pyros came out, then Hydratos came out and Pagos and Anemos was ghost towns, Pyros and Hydratos were the new big thing, especially since Hydratos had the Ozma Mount challenge. Later after some months had passed, the whole Eureka series died and you'd see like less than 10 players per Eureka instance. So my fun has went down the drain so I was forced to try something new. I started crafting and gathering to try to keep me entertained in FFXIV. Got all crafter and gatherers to max level including all classes to max level in like 2 months while only playing like 2-4hrs a day and would log on to do daily roulettes and then log right back off. Finally after a year or so, Shadowbringers came out, my brother and sister was hyped about SB so we all played together, best expansion so far imo, played for a long time and wanted to experience every single bit of content and new things to explore. But my hype went down the drain after being able to complete the game within a couple of hours if you spammed through the story without reading and left bored once you was done with everything as usual. I didn't really bother with grinding dungeons for the "Best Gear" or Raids or etc. because in about 2 months, all of the Raid gear or dungeon gear will be useless since you could easily buy similar HQ gear off the markets for 200k Gil each and now you're suddenly the best player for the next 2 months. lmao So I was fed up with the same ol same ol every year, so I finally semi-quit FFXIV, but I was told there is a "New Eureka" coming out. I quickly hopped back on the hype train but the new Eureka was errrrm, forgot what's it called, the war zone looking place, it was fun, the bosses were fun, the theme was awesome, everything was cool, but then you turn to the highest level and then it gets boring. So after that, I was done, I got tired of being bored, a friend of mine saw my Party Finder saying "Is there anything to do in this game? This game is boring if you have no friends and the PvP sucks! And good games out there?!" So my friend /whispered me saying I should try BDO because it's currently FREE at the moment and since I love PvP so much, that game would be a perfect fit for me since it meets all of my needs to what I like in a game, which are; Playing at my own pace, can play solo, can PvP 24/7, don't need to rely on others to progress. I was in heaven when I found BDO, the first months were tough but I adapted real fast and now I'm hooked on the game, can't even get off the game to try new games because everything feels slow now in terms of combat! But I love BDO, I'm 700gs now and my gear is still BIS and I PEARL Abyss don't make gear out of date like FFXIV did to me every month or so. Which means I could take months to grind silver to buy my next piece of gear to progress in gear score and there still wouldn't be a new BIS gear to make my new purchase useless! :D Next month I should be hitting 323ap and 396dp!
The good thing about BDO is that is not trying to be something else, it is still true to its roots, and, while it does have its flaws; it is not trying to become just another copy paste from all the other MMOs out there. I have always read and appreciate the constructive feedback about the game, but people that bash on it just because doesn't play the way they are used to or the way you want is stupid, even more when they said is bad "game design", those are just people with very VERY closed minded "gamers". At my 40 something years old, I can still be proficient in pve/pvp using BDO combo system, so yeah, it is not about age or reaction, more about you like or not, are you willing to get out of your little mind/world and try something different, yes or no. Very good video and take on the game!
One of the things you gotta admire about PA is staying true to their vision, for a company to do that now is extremely rare, community dont develop games, we test em and give feedback, im not saying the devs shouldn't consider some else in the community idea, but we gotta let companies make their games, if no one plays em they will know, but a lot of games have been ruined cuz devs changing their vision listening to the community then players quit which i find comical.
Couldn't agree more. Before i knew BDO i hate mmorpg genre i mean i tried it but it've never felt like it. Now i can proudly say I am addicted to BDO over 10k hours and counting
Honestly, BDO is the first game where I actually felt involved in the combat. Just running up to an enemy and pressing numbers in a row or watching your character auto attack whithout moving always felt lacking to me. I'm sure there are more intricacies but I never managed to get into them. Then I tried BDO on a whim because I happened to get it when you could get it for free for a time and it was exactly what I had been looking for. I tried to get back into RuneScape later only to realize that without the knowledge system and the entire map already visible there wasn't all that much incentive to go and explore. Or how tedious cooking can be when ingredients don't stack and the next bank is halfway across the town.
Well said! Been playing since Mystic release on PC and still haven't done 50% of what the game has to offer. To be honest, since playing BDO, all other MMO games have been ruined due to BDO's awesome combat system and beautiful graphics. This is the one and only game that a person can enjoy playing, get burnt out, quit, comeback and enjoy it all over again for many years to come.
Very good point! This is why Asmo and many other like him won't like BDO and compare it with WOW every time.. they just won't get it.. they do not like mmorpg, they like WOW... and they spect to every MMO be replication of wow, if it is not the same thing is not approved by them... they don't like it... I hope they stop talking bad about BDO..
actually PVP is one of the things that for me if an MMO doesnt have its an insta quit. like why should i even bother gearing to kill a random spider 3sec faster than i did 2 months ago?
i think the reason it's still alive is there is a notable amount of players that just love the game and all its systems. that said there's about the same amount of American players as new world or less and I don't think its considered as a hit. some of the die hards are apparently all time level whales, however, I don't think they rly retain new players, ppl just get curious, check it out for the 1st-4th time, then quit. every top 10 MMO gets a bump with new content, this is the only one where I see content creators ignoring this point(mainly because they're sponsored from what I seen)
Wow, the production on this video is insane. You put a lot of work into it and deserve more subs than you currently have. Thanks for taking the time to give your opinion.
I’ve played BDO on and off for 3 years, and I can say, PA is making an effort to remove lots of P2W contents. Nowadays for new players the only thing they need to buy is the tent. If you don’t want RNG progress there are are different ways to progress. They’ve introduced god ayer weapons, and if that still doesn’t suit you just caphras your items. Sure progression will be slow, but you don’t really need to spend money. Spending money on costumed to get cron stones / selling on CM just gives me the impression the person doesn’t enjoy the game. BDO is in the best state it’s ever been and I’ve never enjoyed the game as much in the past.
its simple, because theres actually people enjoy play the game and all bad stuff that people know about BDO is outdated before the Pearl Abyss take over and fix it slowly
just one note the 26 classes is bit miss leading becous almost all exept 2 of those classes have a 2 specs(awakening/succession) that makes the classes feel compleatly different making it more like 50 classes in total but 2 of them (shai and archer) with no secound spec
Wonderfully said. I 've been playing bdo on and off for 5 years now but I just can't not go back to this game. What you said about the game being true to its own vision and not trying to be any other mmo is so satisfying to hear. If you don't like how the game is then the game is not for you, simple as that. Thanks again for the great video
The best thing about BDO is that you don't have to do anything once you get past the stupid tutorial -- literally you can just start running across the whole map (you will die eventually - hehe). Do whatever you want when you want. Now if you want to be top dog you will have to grind forever. The other best thing is that it's also the easiest game to take breaks from - leave for a few months or years and it's pretty easy to come back and dive in again.
I quit BDO in 2017 cuz I felt the p2w systems were outright hateful. Came back in 2023 because a friend was playing, and I was blown away by the sheer amount of improvements. Thrown myself into the grind and having more fun then ever. I love this game. I've spent entire days just fiddling with my worker empire and setting up farms.
It was very hard to play BDO in the beginning But I am still playing. Although I still have no love for the up grade system the seasons have made my gameplay good enough to keep me in. I like many mostly play Life skill when not trying the new release. So as you say it is not perfect but I have been in BDO longer than I stayed in WOW.
Because we've spent over the years a lot of money :P , fun fact, I came back after a year. I sold my 2 tet tungrads. I bought 2 tri disto earrings. Both went tet.
I love BDO. And the grind and enhancing? Well, i take it over the long run. Like some say, this game is a marathon and theres a lot to do besides traditional grinding.I play on Series S.
What folks like Osmangold and TheLazyPeon ignore/barely touch in their reviews is that BDO is NOT WoW, nor is it a clone of any other mmorpg game. You are 100% correct. Have been playing the game on NA since March 2016, have 25 characters, and even started 2 seasons ago on EU. Yes I buy Pearls, Yes I have 5 T9s, Yes I have 6 or 7 houses, yes I have workers, Yes I make items for sale on the Central Market and yes, even though I have done the "fast-track" for a new character, most have done the Balenos/Serendia/Calpheon/Mediah/Valencia part 1 main quests at a minimum. And main has done/started all new regions via the quests. Dungeons have yet to be finished, sailing has yet to reach trading status. Basically, the game is always changing in some way or another. I wonder how many new players have even been to Olvia, back in 2016 you started there. I wonder how many OLD players know who Hadum is? There are still areas for me to explore and even start/finish.. and THAT is what I like about the game. You don't HAVE to do anything or over time you can do the lot. And PA has not finished adding new areas. Look at the World Map. Good Honest Review, far better than any of the mentioned 'players reviews' above.
As a bdo vet since 2017 and being almost at 7k hours, What got me hooked was the combat, I loved the combat compared to lets say WoW where you spam 1 2 3 4 5 over and over and it gets repetitive. Combine that and just grinding mobs going around in a circle in a rotation for 10 hours everyday, then at the end of the session the satisfaction of reaping the 3-6b you can make in a day farming is just so satisfying. If you get tired of grinding mobs and want a break you got a more chill playstyle of lifeskilling which is easily as enjoyable as grinding mobs. This is a game i've come and gone from but, I've always come back and i'll never stop loving the game and the passion i have for it. No other mmo in the genre compares to it. PA just keeps making the game better, one week at a time.
I often feel like the niche games are the ones that end up being the best. The big popular ones that go for the catch all approach get lots off players but often don't really excel at any one thing in particular.
and also fact and fun situation right now, people who burn out at Lost Ark right now currently refreshing their mind and start touching BDO again, Including myself XD. But i still decide lost ark currently as my Main MMO, while i also refreshing my mind playing BDO.
Love your voice! Ive been playing BDO since 2016. This video caught my eye cause the name of it is the name of my guild. LOL. Least someone in bdo knows what Dark Horse actually means!!
BDO is one of a kind, literally. It also has the best combat out of any MMORPG. It's also not as infested with RTS due to the way they handle trading among players (you don't). Somehow, the cash shop is one of the best and least p2w cash shop out there. While it's not the best MMORPG there could be, it's the best one we have had since its release. And honestly, it has only been getting better.
It's a tricky thing, MMORPG's is actually such an umbrella term. It's a genre, a very vague and general genre. But what everyone imagines when they hear MMORPG is a whole new life, literally. When you imagine your ideal MMORPG you want an entirely new fantasy world to live your life in. BDO isn't that ideal MMORPG. But it has a huge open world. It has amazing combat, stellar graphics. The first complaint anyone that hates on BDO thinks of is "all you do is grind, there's no other gameplay". Which is hilarious. Yes, the ultimate goal is to accrue an enormous wealth of silver. It's a sandbox mmorpg. You take that silver and do whatever you want. Whether you're going to become a lifeskill guru, or a highly geared player.. you need silver to do it all. It's NOT a themepark mmo. It's not gonna hold your hand and tell you what to do. You FIND what you do, that's why the players who get into it.. get _into_ it. You make your own goals and its up to your own desire to achieve something to make something of the game. It has insane amounts of depth and content. I'm getting overwhelmed just trying to think about all of it. It's insane. It's overwhelming, and I think that's the first barrier -> People find it hard to get into and people trash on its new player experience.. but I don't actually think the new player experience is bad. In fact, it's hard to make it much better considering the type of game it is. You don't know what to do and are overwhelmed by the amount of options you have?? That's the point! You can do anything you want, you just pick a goal and work towards it learn more about the game, find more goals, find friends, find enemies, and do so much more.
The only game that I think can compete with the amount of content BDO offers as things to do is OSRS. Then you add incredible Fighting Game combos intrinsically to your combat system and you got the most serotonin-squeezing games of all time. They only need to improve the cash shop more and keep releasing content
It's just a different kind of game for different kind of player, my friend who never into mmo before ask me for a video game and I tell him to try bdo because there's a free event now being addicted to it even surpassing me on gears, and there's one of my guildmates who just exclusively play life skilling in the game, for some it's a bad and confusing game but for other some it's the only game that they play.
Sounds like a great chance to jump in then
You should of did a review of the current game and current content then.
It's not the only game like that either, the same thing happens to me with other games I've loved like EVE Online and Warframe.
hi veltas
I started with Eve, moved to FF 14, and now I'm on BDO. I love all three of those, and I can't really say which one I like the most. But they each have their own merits, and I've been addicted to all of them at one point. It's just a matter of perspective, and what I see is that when people say that you don't know real MMOs, it really means that they're afraid to try any other than the one that they like.
@@HoodedHamster it’s nice to run into you here!
The anxiety and helplessness of being picked up and slowly walked to the edge 😭😭😭
The dedication the devs put to improve this game and continue to improve this game is mindblowing. It just keeps getting better and better.
yea, improving on grinding in circles is really just improving all the time! now you can grind in loops!

Great analysis. I also agree that one of the reasons BDO stood the test of time is the fact it's so unique among the genre.
@@Bvic3 What a sad dude. lmao
EvE is even more but it's gameplay doesn't fit everyone
12:17 killed me. Good video!
Legend!
As someone who's a BDO vet, got around 10k hours i agreed with a lot of points in this video. Easily one of the better takes.
I've quit this game many times and always come back for the PvP. The combat system in this game surpasses other MMORPGs games I've seen.
His tap in that clip was no contest the best enhance I've ever seen. The full reaction is amazing 👍
I'm korean and don't speak English fluently but I find your pronunciation so clear and easy to understand
Wouldn't be a true bdo player if I didn't bash the game at least a little bit 👍
When you talk about zerker griefing two separate times in the video…I felt that
This game is absolutly underrated.
Unlike any other MMORPG. BDO can literally add anything they want in the game, which is quite something
I can imagine the office like:
“Did you see the new doctor strange movie?”
….
This was suggested to me out of the blue but damn was well worth the watch. Quality content
That zerker slander was personal lol. Wasn't a lie though 😂😂
Ya they don’t even know what they’re asking for. You physically can’t quick slot every skill, the combat wouldn’t make any sense.
@@Shiggy_ I agree it's done well! I was just saying that there is teleporting now for those who do like to have that convenience.
I think the reason is clear, as a long time player of BDO:
If you get past the first week, you're in.
That used to be months of hurdles, but can now be done in a few days for a new player.
if you had a pen ogre in 2019 you were 1 in 10000000
You say it. Today, anything is possible in BDO. Pearl Abyss could add just anything and there is barely any rules to be expected anymore. That is what makes it so exciting, along with the weekly test server updates bringing new systems, adjustments and class tweaks.
Amazing video, really well put together. It's insane how high the quality is compared to your subscriber count. Well done man

What a great analytical video. Damn you really put a nice different perspective on it.
I loved EVE online. Conceptually at least. I loved the depth and ambience of the game but yeah, the combat was uhhh.... well it was combat.
Nowadays is just an incredibly good game with a lot of content although not perfect, mostly because the steep learning curve which tends to deter new players.
this is one of the best analysis vids i have ever seen in the gaming genre. not just rambling but showing numbers. subscribed.
Played from 2016-2020. Back after three years and definitely a refresh where I don’t have to grind myself to death for PENs now.
Most other mmo are all combat all the time, whether it is around story, gridning, raids or pvp and only spare minimal thought for non combat activities.
im returning player from 2019, and played this game again 5 days ago xd
the fact that no other MMORPG can replace this game + this game future becoming clear, i would love to spend more time grinding those PEN
Bro, at first I thought you got no clue about BDO... But I was pretty damn wrong! Very good and informational video which pretty much nails it!
i kinda miss the old BDO feeling.
The Black spirit grins as he watches you blow your 10th accessory attempt, "Hehehe"
I didn't really bother with grinding dungeons for the "Best Gear" or Raids or etc. because in about 2 months, all of the Raid gear or dungeon gear will be useless since you could easily buy similar HQ gear off the markets for 200k Gil each and now you're suddenly the best player for the next 2 months. lmao
So I was fed up with the same ol same ol every year, so I finally semi-quit FFXIV, but I was told there is a "New Eureka" coming out.
It's one of the very few games I come back to over and over. I can spend hours just life skilling. No other game can I spend time doing that.
This is such an amazing video bro I watched the whole thing everything was precise and accurate this video deserves more views
i think the reason it's still alive is there is a notable amount of players that just love the game and all its systems. that said there's about the same amount of American players as new world or less and I don't think its considered as a hit. some of the die hards are apparently all time level whales, however, I don't think they rly retain new players, ppl just get curious, check it out for the 1st-4th time, then quit. every top 10 MMO gets a bump with new content, this is the only one where I see content creators ignoring this point(mainly because they're sponsored from what I seen)
To me, the gameplay alone always makes me come back even after years playing this game
12:08 i laugh so badly xD
I've been playing, quitting and coming back to BDO since before it was available in the West for all the reasons you so eloquently described here.
Very solid review. BDO continues to woo me back every few years and that's perfectly fine. It's great.
I've been playing BDO since 2016 non-stop and this video got me weirdly hyped for it.
Definitely one of the better video on BDO in 2023 that i have watched
Very good content and a nice voice. Keep doing what you do, you'll do great.
"RNG Hell" Accurate af. But that moment you do the impossible makes it all WORTH IT. Best MMO EVER!
Great video!
Ouch, that tet-distor attempt. I feel your pain.
Because we've spent over the years a lot of money :P , fun fact, I came back after a year. I sold my 2 tet tungrads. I bought 2 tri disto earrings. Both went tet.
You deserve an Asmongold raid bro!
Such impressive quality of video. Gratz! New sub here :)
I love BDO. And the grind and enhancing? Well, i take it over the long run. Like some say, this game is a marathon and theres a lot to do besides traditional grinding.I play on Series S.
Main thing is the combat, the animations, everything feels well made, and its addictive as fuck sadly ..
Good Honest Review, far better than any of the mentioned 'players reviews' above.
that zerk comment sounded like it was made from experience
I quit in like 2020 I believe. Recently came back because the devs seems to have fixed most of the issues I had with the game. Mad respect.
People telling me shit like ffx14 and wow has better combat than bdo and they call me the ignorant one for playing bdo
That black spirit always be grinning like the actual devil. 😂
Love your voice! Ive been playing BDO since 2016. This video caught my eye cause the name of it is the name of my guild. LOL. Least someone in bdo knows what Dark Horse actually means!!
Really good vid, agreed with a lot of your takes. Good work
Yo I never thought of that, BDO is actually a 3rd person diablo
If you think BDO enhancement is te most punitive and grindy don't even try L2 haha
This video got you my sub great work
