  • A fabric Yo-Yo is a textile embellishment that can be made from fabric scraps and a few stitches. It's about manipulating the fabric and creating a round rosette that can be layered, stitched onto other fabric pieces, or used as jewelry. Using a yo-yo maker, or a plastic template is a great way to assist you in the creation of the yo-yo. I show the process from start to finish in this video. The yo-yo maker allows you to press fabric in between the templates, and then you stitch inside the guides.

I have been using these templates on and off for more than ten years. The included directions are correct but over-complicated. When I haven't used the templates for a few months or years, I never remember how to do it and so have saved your video. I like the idea of using the bigger needle, somehow using a small needle in the big holes is awkward. You always need lots of thread, because you can't stop in the middle.
If I need one, I usually go through my scraps and make a dozen or more, so I have them at hand.

Good idea to make a batch of yoyos with what you have for future projects. I, too, find the included directions overly complicated. I'm glad I could refresh your memory with the process.

What is the purpose or use for a “yo-yo” ? Im new to needle crafts and have never seen this before. Love your instructional videos💖

Thanks for your kind comments. Yo-Yo's have many purposed for sewing enthusiats. Some people stack them and use them in crafts (making legs for a doll, for example) others stitch them together side-by-side to make a yo-yo quilt. They will use hundereds, if not thousands of them to make the quilt. As a slow stitcher, I use it as an embellishment piece. It's an interesting way to add textured fabric or a round shape to my pieces. Yo-yo's can be used as the center of rosettes. Just for some uses.

Thank you for that demo. I am interested to know the make and size of the needle you use please. Thank you💕

I believe this one was a Tulip brand Big Eye Bullion Needle size 2. I love the feel of this needle. It's made for creating the Bullion stitch (so the needle eye is the same size of the needle itself) which makes it easy to use for many things. I prefer big eye needles for the majority of my stitches. All needles have a specific purpose, but hand stitching is subjective. So, I use what I enjoy using.

Thanks for today’s demonstration. I never thought to use a plastic template for my yo-yos. Do you use them regularly or do you prefer to make them without the template? Thanks for the info. 😃

I only use the template if I'm making a lot of specific size yo-yos. I find it very helpful, but tend to make many unusual sizes and I don't have all matching size templates.

I’ll stick to your first method. Too much work with the template. Just my opinion. It trying to be critical. Thank you so much.
