I like the "Towards the end of her life " bit, lol, she hasn't been scrapped, she is still going strong!! Maybe you mean end of her life on the network, she is now preserved and looking awesome and still quite claggy!! :)
If it was injectors, then replacing them would have done the trick. See there's a lot less smoke when she's working hard, so I reckon she needed a de-coke! Thanks for posting - bring back the oldies!
Beautiful piece of film, i just love the whole clip especially the last few seconds up the 1/37, well done and please don't remove it as some others do on here.Best Wishes for 2013, Mick.
It was towards the end of 1991. The DMU coach had been converted to a sandite coach 50033 was withdrawn shortly after that, but was reinstated in early 1992 due to a shortage of motive power
Good old smokey joe as she was named and yes it was indeed broken piston rings as seen on locomaster profiles class 50 dvd with former area fleet manager geoff Hudson
Some twit will probably say, "oh they all do that after idling for about an hour, it's the carbon building up in the exhaust and burning off on start off" or other such bunkem.
@@bonkeydollocks1879 That lump must have had interesting looking bores. A fairly painless fix if dealt with sooner, but if you employ monkeys with spanners rather than engineers this is the result. Mind you, if the dictum from "on high" was to run it 'til it dropped, the blame lies elsewhere.
@@steveluckhurst2350 I think it was a case of run it into the ground yes, I could have bought a big end half shell out of this unit, it was at Kidderminster Station on a diesel gala on a fundraising stall to have this work done, wish I had bought it now.
+Craig Nicklin no problem. it was on a dvd bu locomaster profiles about the last day in service and then the specials they did. very good dvd if you can find one
Very bad to see smoking like this, could end up in pistoms failing due to unburned fuel.in bores. I would check eash cylinder in turn by slacking off injector pipe,if smoke reduces, you have found your faulty injector,if the bank is smoking its down to fuel pump tappets / camshaft timing.A very common EE fault
Yea good old useless fitters , let's leave her on fast idle for a bit to warm her up see if that helps! As soon as I saw the smoke I thought piston ring's and low and behold reading the comments below it was rings. No wonder the decline of great locomotives like this were on the increase , useless , clueless fitters!. How can anybody think this is normal is beyond me.
Stapleton Road oh so you are implying I read the comment first?, I didn't, its standard engine stuff , applies to any engine really of the four stroke kind . No insight, I just know what I'm talking about. Have repaired and maintained heavy diesel engines for 40 years..
“It’ll clear!” They said.... take her round to the red, 450rpm 😂. Jokes aside, they just don’t make em like that now. All so quiet and so clean. How boring!!
Love the way she rocks when the motor is revved!
I was there at Newton Abbott that night and remember seeing her smoking badly . So glad she was saved
That's the best footage I've seen of a Class 50 on the 1:37 climb to Exeter Central :-)
Thanks,Thats really appreciated.
Stunning footage.. some of the best ive seen from back in the 90's.! NSE..! love it.!
I thought the shot at 1min 40 was a steam engine to start with, the clouds of smoke etc!! lol Dave

Amazing footage, and despite it's problems seem to attack that gradient with gusto....Bob
Ah, nostalgia. Much prefer to see that than to see it stuffed & mounted inside a museum.

Look at it from Glorious' point of view. "I'm a steam engine really, see!"
Great clips

I can't see (or hear) anything wrong with her!! Another beautiful example of a beautiful EE loco :D
Give over ! @ 2:12 she is sounding so rough and spewing out clouds of blue smoke.
Nice sound, now thats a 50 in all its glory...great capture
Cor! I can almost smell the diesel smoke! :D
@argenvia Many thanks Gus, how are the English Electric locos from Portugal getting on in Argentina?
Pure awesomness
Superb.
Very good video
poor passengers smoke, by God
Greetings from Argentina
gus
go on lady!!!! smoke em all out!!!! brilliant vid thanx
She was some clagger right enough , probably the best in the business , could mistake her for a steamer.
Ah i remeber smokey joe at dawlish, the grockels(tourists)had coughing fits when it passed, still a nice sound though !
Didn't the 50s sound amazing? I was a trainman at Salisbury when these were on their last knockers. Shame they weren't maintained and kept.
was it definately injectors?
Its unusual for all to be faulty and the smoke is coming from all exhausts?
Great video, nice story to go with it :)
And to put things right it was not her injectors I believe it was broken piston rings causing the clag.
But I may be wrong.
According to one of the Class 50 videoes out around that time the fault was actually broken piston rings, not the injectors.
Absolutely correct it was broken piston rings not the injectors
When did the tunnel between St Davids and central get built?
1732
Several acres of Jurassic woodland were burned to climb that gradient.
Helllfire !!!! More like a Deltic engine fitted 😂😂
not awful bloody amazing
in the first clip, with the dmu being pulled, anyone know what year it was filmed??
GCRailfan 1994 i think
Graham Hearn cheers brother!

Mike Wilcock has filmed 049 making more clag than seen here...
This Rocks!!!!

Watch her kick over to the left at 0:53 when the driver opens the taps... :)

In technical terms, it's f*cked.
Still, a bit of smoke keeps the children happy. If only the driver had done more "tones"!

What causes a vac to clag white like that for so long?
TroyTrevains injectors not working properly

Class 50 finale that laira years it's called. Well worth a watch if your into the 50s
what do you mean thats a problem thats how all 50s should be nice and claggy
just doing it's bit for the enviroment

Needs an overhaul, wasn’t this bad at Penzance n 1979.
And come the end she was banned from waterloo
Cor!
broken piston rings Thats why
pissed n broke! Me too!
Stephen Checksfield No...injectors. Broken piston rings would be a lot worse and significant loss in power which 003 sure didn't have.
Bad injectors and cold exhaust.
