Proud to say I’m one of the few maintain operate Henry Ford’s personal locomotive from DT&I fleet Detroit & Lima Northern 4-4-0 #7 today Very neat informative video!
Been a DT&I fan my whole life. The Henry Ford era is fascinating, and you did an excellent job presenting it! He tried to do alot of good things, and some bad, but overall I think he was successful. Today's money-obsessed companies should take afew pointers from his operation.
Thankfully some DT&I rolling stock has been preserved. GTW still holds on the legacy of the DT&I. These preserved rolling stock and the GTW will continue to remind us of what once was Detroit Toledo and Ironton Railroad.
At 2:40 is a picture of Schaefer tower. I was an operator there in the late 70s. I was told that the track going off to the left is where Henry Ford stored his private car.
I am personally very lucky in this type of situation. I live near a place called Greenfield Village, built by Henry Ford in the 1920s. The cool part about it, is that two DT&I steam locomotives there, those being #7 and #45. #45 doesn't run anymore, but #7 does, so it's super cool to see them up close.
I think #7 is in Greenfield Village now, pulling the train around the tracks inside the Village. It's a Baldwin Engine. There used to be one in Champaign Park, in Allen Park when I was a kid. I think it was in the late 1960s or early 1970s, that some kids scaled the fence that was around it and painted it pink. They caught the perps and they had to get the paint off or re-paint it black. The engine was gone a short time later. I wonder what happened to it.
@@briankutscher7903 It was scrapped in the 70's because the cab floor was rotting out and kids often git hurt playing on it. Was cut up for scrap and carried out in trucks. fornology.blogspot.com/2014/06/allen-parks-missing-champaign-park-train.html
@@engineerskalinera Indeed. I'm hard at work spray-painting one of my Berkshires I got for Christmas into a DT&I 2-8-4 and a Marx caboose with Lionel trucks into a DT&I caboose, too.
That's better than some other major railroads like the Missouri Kansas and Texas (MKT), Kansas City Southern and Virginian Railway where only one steam locomotive from each of these railroads has been preserved or survives.
first thing that comes to mind when I think of the 1920's (railroads) is pre USRA style consolidations (high headlight, boiler mounted bell, wal-shirts valve gear, taller domes and stack, etc.)
Loved this greatly, Amtrak. Whilst on the topic of Henry Ford’s railroad, I would like to ask this question. Do you know of any preserved locomotives of the DT&I, steam or diesel?
@@alpal.mp4 The electric locomotives were actually built by Ford. www.american-rails.com/dti.html Besides cars, Ford was also involved the manufacturing of tractors and aircraft.
The map you show of the Virginian Railway is completely incorrect. The Virginian did not go to Newport News, Virginia. The Virginian went to Norfolk, Va. by a completely different route. Your map is more representative of the Chesapeake and Ohio RR.
I'd assume Green Frog Productions is behind it. They claimed a video of mine that lightly used their work and was up on UA-cam since 2018. Next thing you now that video is gone as of yesterday following an authoritative comment and a claim. I'd assume that other of Jared's videos might be affected by this as well.
Nik the Train Nerd here’s the history of my paper railroad that is drawn on paper. The Campton southwestern was founded in 1856 after its beginning as the Denver Colorado and Northern At the time being 14 miles of track were laid. Then more track was laid The CNW was in charge of the railroad for a few months in 1855 Then CSW came back and then all of the CNW 2-8-0s were put off the track and replaced with CSW 2-6-2s
But, troubles arrived in 1893. The lines were getting old and had to be fixed. So the CSW was sidelined from working in 1899. It reopened in 1906 Then WW1 came around in 1914 and all American railroads were US army railroads until 1918
"Huntington, VIRGINIA"??!! My dear sir, West Virginia seceded from the state of Virginia in 1863. We've been our own state for 157 years now. I would have thought that, whatever school system you attended, you would have been taught history and geography...BUT, apparently NOT!! Well, now you know!! It's Huntington, WEST Virginia!!
I think you should do more Railroad history and info type videos, this is legit awesome and high quality.
Too bad the copyright claim took the original one down.

I love #7, hands down my favorite locomotive at the henry ford

I live in Allen park Michigan 1 block away from the 15 mile stretch of the former electric line. Still has many cantnary arches. Thanks for the video

Today, only three DT&I steam locomotives survived. #’s 7, 16, and 45.
I'm sad that none of their 2-8-4s are around, those were slick

Ah so that explains those catenary structures I see in CN pictures from time to time!
Wow I never knew Henry Ford had one of the snazziest railways. Those catenary structures are the coolest I've ever seen.
I’ve lived in Allen Park my whole life and it has and will always be called Henry Fords Railroads, so long as the arches exist.
I’ve grown up next to the Flat Rock and Dearborn subdivisions all my life. Great video about the railroad that’s still well rooted in my hometown.
Love this! Fantastic work.
That is Huntington, WEST Virginia.
The DT&I was never double tracked, though bridges were installed in preparation for double track.
Love your channel and thank you so much for the additional informations in Meters and Km/h in all of your videos 👍👍👍
Delray Connecting Railroad deserves a good video now that USS Great Lakes and AK are shutting down.
Props to Henry Ford for buying a railroad and actually improving it.....unlike some other company (*cough* GM *cough*).
Amazing production

You forgot to mention when Ford sold the DT&I, he sold it for WAY more than it was worth.
What a legend.
I always wondered what those concrete arches were for ??
Huntington, West Virginia.
Ah yes my favorite railroad. The doorknob toilet and iron man railroad

Numbers 7, 16 and 45
Never knew that Henry ford built trains thought only cars since I've done a project on it but despite that this was quite interesting
He didn't build locomotives, he just owned a railroad for a brief period of time

And one of their connections to CSX is still known as DT&I junction.
Nice keep it up 😁
neat
I think i have a picture of his engines on my wall its American and has white walls
Hey Amtrak, just wondering, what did you ever get claimed on?
I wonder if they’ll ever look into re-electrification
Yes, when the price of diesel fuel goes parabolic.
i mean, ALCo built cars in the 10s and 20s
That was how Chrysler got his start, apparently.
Why was it reuploaded?
It says in the description he got a copyright claim
