    if that is a throw away microwave how about throwing the resin in there while its still curing? this might give it that extra bit of heat needed

      thats what i was thinking.

    • @kameljoe21
      @kameljoe21 3 роки тому +1

      I was also thinking that as well. We now know that it will get to about 160. I would temp it until it gets to about 140 and then plop it in and see if it works. I think the bit of extra heat may do the trick. I really want to see popcorn in the resin.

    • @RissaNaChelle
      @RissaNaChelle 3 роки тому +2

      Agreed. They have the temperature gun and have found out the max heat the resin puts off while curing, so they could pop it in the microwave when it reaches around 120-130°C. Fantastic idea. I wonder if anyone has tried to microwave resin while it cures though. Would that speed up the curing process or would it stand a higher chance of combustion? Maybe a better project for outside or at the least with their shop doors open.

    Put them in the vac chamber while the resin cures, a reduction in pressure will lower the temperature needed to pop the popcorn. Also, don't rest the bottom of the cup on a surface like you did. The kernels at the bottom had the temp wicked away by the table.

    • @teardowndan5364

      That or he could place it on a slitlely hot surface to contribute with the heating process, besides not losing energy to the table

    • @parallax2107
      @parallax2107 3 роки тому

      Beat me to it :D The vacuum should also slow the rate that heat is leaving the resin, meaning a higher max temperature.

    • @jpolowin0
      @jpolowin0 3 роки тому

      The vacuum would help, but not a great deal. A quick Google search tells me that popcorn pops when its internal pressure reaches about 135 psi (930 kPa), a bit more than 9 atmospheres. This implies that popping requires a pressure differential of a bit more than 8 atm between inside and outside. So even under a vacuum, the corn would have to be heated enough to reach an internal pressure of more than 8 atm.

    • @teardowndan5364
      @teardowndan5364 3 роки тому +1

      @@jpolowin0 Putting it in a vacuum chamber gives it a 15psi head-start and lowers the temperature needed to pop it.

  • @theezeelife292
    @theezeelife292 3 роки тому +18

    If you want another shot at it, try this:
    Make a solid base of resin like you did in the first video. Then, put a few kernels and encase them in resin. When the resin starts to get hot, say around 120 C, put it in the microwave and heat it up while it's still curing. You may end up with the results you want.
    It's worth a shot anyway.

    I think that placing the popcorn kernels at the center of mass might be hotter. I'd also try mixing the resin a bit hot with the activator though that might cause an exothermic reaction. And make sure you are using a good quality popcorn that was stored properly. As I understand it, internal moisture of the kernels is critical for popping corn.

    Ok. Try this. Create a new cast with a void for a few corn kernels of poppable corn, but instead of trying to pop them in a microwave, try popping them from the top (or side so the sunlight can get through unaltered) or even making the cast with 6 flat faces to make this easier, using a magnifying glass and sunlight. Also try and put a tiny amount of vegetable oil in with the kernels, just a drop.

    The only thing I can think of as a last possible option for this experiment would be to put the kernels in, and then putting them into the vacuum chamber, it'll lower the boiling point and the pressure in the corn kernels giving you a slightly higher chance of them popping while the resin is still curing, I see a couple comments suggesting similar.
