Yes I use electric fence wire for QPR. EFLW 9:1 TLT. It has 5 strands of stainless steel interwoven in the plastic cord. They are connected internally best result ,West coast of Canada to Japan on 2watts! Doesn't corrode either.
I once used a guard rail off the side of the Freeway as a 40 meter antenna to check into the regional 40 meter SSB Noon Time Net. I was heard very well. I had a Kenwood TS140 on the passenger seat. The radio was grounded to the seat rails in the car with an antenna tuner and the alligator clip to the guard rail. Lots of fun!
Living in Montana, I like your first method of testing an electric fence. ;) You can usually hear the fence clicking or ticking in the receive with just a short wire hooked to the antenna jack as a pickup wire, obviously not hooked to the fence. Thanks for another good video. 73 K1AUS
I've only tried metal watter gutter pipes in old fashioned hotels in France couple of times. Worked TRES BON with FT-817 and the T1 ATU! Also in the rain. GL in your further endevours! 73! Linas LY2H
Interesting video. Unless its your electric fence you don't know if/when it will be turned on. Might be safer to try your luck with a barbed wire fence, at least that won't be shocking.

I am quiet aware of Electric fences been a metal detectorist I have come across many of these Electric Fences when crossing over from one field to another and felt the shocks many times over. In fact most of us detectorist can tell when the fence is active as we will hear the pulses reacting in our headphones, with a short break of a few seconds then back they come normally 3 pulses per cycle. I find a wooden shaft digger helps crossing a fence push down on the wire between the wire supports / posts there is more give in the wire at this point then easily step over. Now the way you connected to that fence wire yes it is multi stranded on a nylon type rope I am surprised you did not follow the fence to the battery (12volt ???amp) and connect to either end of the wire you would have a choice of the left over wire left on the reel (Coil) or used the other end at the battery. The woven-in conductor is usually stainless steel. I have used fence wire for kite antennas in the past.
Yes it’s stainless steel. Not great for antennas. Very lossy.
