On the bench today is a 1:60 scale Matchbox Carbodies Taxi FX4R produced from 1987-2002. According to Matchbox Cars Wiki, this MB174 is the earlier version of the current model, the MB667 London Taxi. Like most Carbodies Taxi models, it has opening rear doors. This one is the version released between ’92 and ’96 in all black with the Union Jack and London Taxi tampos on the left side only. I’m going to look around online for some other variations and maybe give this old girl a facelift.
Thanks to Schottys-Diecast for supplying me with this casting!

Taxis in the city of London were initially called hackneys from a Norman French word, which was used to mean a horse could be hired. They were horse drawn carriages. The term is still there today, most people, especially the older generation, always call the taxis hackney cabs.
The first motorised taxis in London began operating on the streets of the city in 1897. The taxis originally ran on a motor that was powered by electricity. The Taxis were called the “Berseys” after their inventor C. Bersey.
In 1948, Austin introduced the FX3. It ran on a petrol engine, which proved uneconomical for the time. The FX3 is the model that made the black taxi look popular. The cab was made in black, and anyone who wanted a different colour had to pay extra. Seeing as it was the post-war period, most fleet owners wanted to keep costs low, and they decided they would not pay a dime more for fancy colours. Since then, most cabs in London have remained black for ease of identification.
The Austin FX4 came into production in 1958. Since then, it has undergone little change and has been criss-crossing the roads of London for over 60 years. It’s become an iconic symbol of the city like the Tower of London or the Parliament Buildings. For many tourists, it’s the first thing to greet you at Heathrow airport and the last thing you see as you’re dropped off for your flight home.

Thanks, Neil. Some good memories for me of many trips to London. 🍁🇬🇧
Beautiful new taxi cab.
Thanks, Udo! 🍁🇬🇧
Dang Andrew. What a stunner. I love old and odd vehicles. Especially the service vehicles like this taxi and the Checker Cab....And with your touch on the decals what an absolute beauty
Thanks so much, Pete. I really appreciate the fine feedback. 🍁🇬🇧
I like the fresher decals on this cab, Andrew. A nice, modernized version of a classic.
Thank you, David. I looked around for some ideas and came up with this composite design that was easy to make and apply. 🍁🇬🇧👍
nice restoration, details and paint job 👍👍
Thank you very much, Joe. Have a great day. 🍁👍🇬🇧
Great build always Andrew keep up the good work have fun in the Alps say hi to the wife have a blessed day and a good weekend and God bless
Thanks, JC. You too! 🍁🏔
Wonderful build Andrew! The custom decals are fantastic and bless you for showing the "fun" of reinstalling opening doors on these little castings 🤣
Ah, the little opening doors...! That was probably 20 minutes of fiddling around, edited down to 60 seconds! I'm sure many people felt my pain! 🍁😂
Excellent restorations Andrew!
Thanks, Shawn. Hard to work with black, as you know. But it came out well in the end. 🍁👍🇬🇧
I am ready for a trip to London. Nice refurbishment.
Hi, Cathy! If you ever get there, be prepared to pay as much for the black taxi fare across town as your plane ticket! They're not cheap! 🍁😂
Always enjoy watching. Also like the history lesson. Nice work Andrew. 👍👍👍
Glad you enjoyed it. It really has an interesting history, doesn't it? 🍁🇬🇧
Superb restoration, great decals and paint finish nicely done
All the best Martin 👍
Thanks, Martin. I wonder if everyone realizes how expensive a ride in one of these is in the city! 🍁👍😀
Another awesome master piece 😍🔥👍👍👍😎
Thanks, Dane. Wishing you a great weekend. 🍁👍
Love the car.... it turned out great
Thanks, Dan! Hope all is well with you, brother. 🍁👊
Beautiful Custom, Andrew...
Great Weekend....
Thanks, Bernard! 🍁🇬🇧
Your custom decals made this taxi really special, Andrew. Thanks for the remainder of my favorite city in the world. Normally I visit minimum 1 week a year and now I haven't been there since autumn 2019.
Thanks, Tina. Mine too. My youngest daughter spent two years there in school, so I used to take EasyJet across and stay with her. The whole weekend would be real cheap. Love London! 🍁👍🇬🇧
Another beauty! Great job
Thank you, Paul! I always appreciate your feedback. Cheers! 🍁👍
Absolutely Stunning build Andrew, love ya decal work,🤗 awesome white toner decals, have a great weekend👊
Cheers🍻🍺 KC 🇦🇺🤝🇨🇦😎👍
Thank you, KC! Cheers, buddy! 🍁🇬🇧
Mornin’ Andrew! That came up a treat; far more eye-catching than the original scheme 👍🏻🇨🇦👏🏻🇬🇧👌🏻🇨🇭
All that’s needed now is to save up a mortgage deposit to ride in the thing!💰💵
I hear ya. They're not cheap! lol. 🍁😂
Amazing 👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you! Cheers! 🍁👍🇬🇧
Awesome restoration Andrew. Love it. Have a great day.
Aside from refitting the fiddly rear doors, this was a pretty basic job. I think it looks updated. Wishing you a great day too, Charlie. Take care! 🍁👊
Great result. The decals are really amazing on this London Taxi!
Thanks. They came out well, for going on a black car! 🍁👍🇬🇧
This is really great work.............. keep doing these form of restoration......... Best wishes from AR Diecast..........
Thanks, for the fine feedback. Will do! 🍁👍
Very nice restoration :)
Thank you very much, Juhani! I appreciate all your support. 🍁
Great work as usual.
Thank you, Mark! 🍁👍🇬🇧
Beautiful!
Thanks, Yannick! 🍁👍🇬🇧
very nice!
Thanks for the visit! 🍁🇬🇧
Nice job Andrew. Glossy base is worth the effort, especially since some child will be playing with it, and will actually see it.
Hi Timo! Thanks for weighing in on the London cab. Hoping all is well at your place. Your channel has been quiet since the Canada Day build. I keep checking in to see! Take care, my friend. 🍁🇨🇦👊
@@MapleLeafCustoms I have been super busy with outdoor stuff this summer, and also I had a real bummer of a London Toy beverage truck that has been very discouraging. My wife suggests I do a nightmare video about it.
Anyhow, there is a very nice restoration of a real basket case truck, which I am assembling tomorrow morning. I may make a quick "Coming soon" video for it. Cheers 😀🍁
Great job Andrew 👍
Thanks, Mark. Hope it was a good weekend for you! 🍁🇬🇧👍
@@MapleLeafCustoms you're welcome my friend and it was
Tht turned out real nice
Thanks for watching and commenting. I appreciate it! 🍁👊
Thats å great build. Would not mind to take that cab around town. The decals looks 100 times better than the oricinal
Thank you, Morten. I've been in one or two of these for a short ride. They're not cheap though! 🍁🇬🇧
7th thumbs up brother and will be watching ❤️👊😁💯👍
I knew you would be, Tony! 🍁👊
A lovely old musher guv!!!
Thanks for watching, Dave. A bit of London lore in this one. 🍁🇬🇧👊
👍 Thx 🇧🇪.
Thank you too, Rudi! 🍁👍
Super awesome as always!!! Love how you incorporates the build number into the license plate.
Thanks, Leo. Not all the castings get a license plate. Some are too small. But this one worked! 🍁🇬🇧👊
nice
Thanks! 🍁👍🇬🇧
What a beautiful job you did on that taxi Andrew! Really nice work. And, I really appreciate the history lesson. It was fascinating!
Thanks, Geoff. I do the research on each car. Might as well throw it in the VoiceOver. Might keep a few people awake! 🍁👍🇬🇧
Oh I know! Big part of the video. I just never commented on it before. This week was particularly interesting to me. Keep it up Andrew!
Another beauty!
Cheers, Marc D
Many thanks, Marc! Wishing you a fine day today. 🍁👍
looks great, lovely restomod. :) the decals look like they wanted to commemorate some special event in the city. ^^
back in 85 I went to London with school class. it was an impressive sight, even though I knew downtown Stuttgart before, but London is way bigger. me and friends snatched a ride with a taxi once, too.
btw, if you ever want to fiddle with modelers' paints, Testors has a "Classic Black", a lighter hue of black (sounds funny, tho) from the days before special kinds of soot was used for pigments like nowadays. in some cases it looks better on older vehicles.
Thanks! I will have a look for some of the Testor's classic black. Good tip! 🍁👊
@@MapleLeafCustoms at your service. :)
Really nice, love the decals. Was thinking of you this week as the NHL started back up. Hope your Leafs do well this season. Thanks for the great Saturday start.
Was thinking the very same thing! Hope springs eternal, Brian! 🍁😀
Very nice work, surprised it didn't have the pre resto issue of floppy doors, (pretty much every one of these I've seen had it)
I read that most of the Carbodies castings have the opening doors. But I'm not familiar with them. Hope you enjoyed the build. Greetings from Switzerland. 🍁👍
@@MapleLeafCustoms i enjoyed it very much so,
when I say floppy doors I meant more that the hinges were very loose fitting, so they tended to waggle in their placement
(or flop open when you tilt the car left/ right) sorry if I described it a bit confusingly 😄
@@baxter22071990 Ah, I got you now. Yes, these were definitely floppy, but only in the reassembly. Once the glass and interior were back in, the doors were stabilized and almost too snug! It's always a challenge putting these together! 🍁
Another great one Andrew as always saw one of those at a car show one time it at some kind of diesel engine in it sure was a odd ball with all the other type cars there but he always had a bunch of people checking it out .love your garage scene looks great 👍
Thanks, David. It's an interesting casting (and real car) for sure! The little diorama was the cheapest one I could find online, but it does the trick. 🍁😀
A really great London taxi! The decals came out really good!
For the 10000 you can subtract 50 😉
I wish you a nice day! 🇱🇺
I can‘t believ that i had exact that car in my hand a few weeks ago🤪
Thanks again, Yves, for sending that one to me. I hope you approve of how it turned out with the new paint and decals. I was happy to save the original wheels too. 🍁👍🇬🇧
@@MapleLeafCustoms absolutely great work! I love it! It‘s always impressing how you bring them back to live!
This looks so nice.
We also have these in Scotland.. Such a cool sight.. The new models are really slick looking with all the modern lights etc... I did notice the steering wheel right away.. Haha..
Great job all round Andrew.
Apologies for the lateness of my viewing...
Things have been a bit out of sorts as you can probably imagine.
Hi, Vic. Hoping you're back home now after the trip to SA. Tough times, I know. Thanks for checking in here. That always means a lot. Peace and love to you and your whole family, from Switzerland. 🍁👍
Great restoration, although it looks too nice to be a believable taxi, ha ha ha.
True! lol! 🍁😂
Whats up Andrew hope all is well buddy
All good over here, Donnie. Enjoying a nice Fall weekend in the Austrian Alps (my wife's home country). 🍁🏔
Matchbox. Austin. FX4R. London. Taxi 186
Hi Kenny. Hope you're having a great weekend. Thanks for watching. 🍁👍
Great video like always, me and my daughter enjoy your tutorials. We have a request for you, I just bought a resin 3d printer and it will be awesome if you can do a video explaining how to print and find files for die-cast , I will like to print some steering wheels and other accessories parts , thanks in advance!
Hi, Jose. I'm so glad that you're enjoying my videos and that they're helping you in the hobby. There are so many videos on UA-cam about 3D printing that are far superior to what I could make. I suggest you watch them. Search for the model of printer that you bought. That's how I learned (and still learning!). As far as getting .stl files to use, thingiverse.com is the very best one stop source. They're all free to download. It's a fun learning curve and please stay in touch to let me know how it's going, OK? 🍁👊
@@MapleLeafCustoms will do ! Thanks for replying!!
NICE job, Andrew, but... did You do the Sol tribute build too? Anyway... Those decals look great to me 😺
Thanks, Cat. No, I missed the Sol tribute, but I've seen a few of them today. 🍁👍
@@MapleLeafCustoms Mine is aboot (see what i did there? lol) to go up
Very cool !! road in one of those when I was in London in 2012!! Went to see the patriots and LA Rams play @ Wembley stadium 🏟 what a great venue. Always a pleasure watching Andrew outstanding job as well
Wembley's a great stadium for an NFL game. I've been to a couple of them too. Love the city! Take care, Eddie. 🍁🇬🇧🏈
